“He doesn’t want to marry you at all! He forced himself to stay here temporarily and promised to marry you so he could run away! He feels nothing for you. At first, he could pretend. But he didn’t want to do that when the woman he truly loved came. Do you still want to defend him?”
Benjamin cruelly exposed the hard truth with no regard for Amber’s feelings.
Amber’s eyes turned red, but she stubbornly raised her head and looked at Benjamin.
“I know he doesn’t like me,” she said calmly. “Plus, I know that he just wants to marry me for power. Then, he can leave and get rid of me. But… I still like him. I still want to marry him. If you say no, I won’t marry anyone for the rest of my life. I’ll be single all my life, and the Jenkins line will stop here!”
“You little wretch!” Benjamin roared.
It was the first time Benjamin saw Amber rebel against him. In a moment of desperation, he slapped her hard.
“He doesn’t even like you, but you insist on marrying him! Why is my daughter such a dumb bitch? Would it kill you to break up with him? You’re embarrassing!”
Amber’s face grew swollen, and her lips bled.
Liam frowned and stopped Amber. “Stop arguing with Mr. Jenkins. Yes, what I did today was impudent. He should punish me. As for our marriage, I think it’s better-“
Before he could say that they should forget about it, Amber covered his mouth and shook her head. “Our marriage has been decided. There’s nothing to talk about. I must marry you. As for what goes between you and Ms. Ellsworth, I knew that beforehand. I’m fine with it. I won’t blame you, either.”
“Good grief, you’re shameless! You’re infuriating!” Benjamin didn’t expect his gentle daughter to be so stubborn about the marriage. Furious, he clutched his chest. It took him a long time to calm himself.
“You’re a fucking disaster, Liam! I should have never let you come here. I should have killed you during the journey. Now, I was tricked! You’ve put me in a spot!” Benjamin snarled, livid. He stormed out.
Benjamin may be cold and cruel, but he was a good father. Amber was his soft spot. Whenever she was involved, he compromised.
When Benjamin was gone, Amber pulled herself away from Liam and said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Liam! My dad hurt you again because of me. I’m so sorry!”
“It’s not because of you.” Liam finally eased his breathing. He looked at Amber helplessly. “It’s me. I manipulated and hurt you again. I’m the selfish one.”
“No, you didn’t! I wasn’t forced.” Amber started crying. “Your situation will only change by marrying me. If you don’t marry me, my dad won’t keep you alive, what with his temper. You have no choice. I just made use of this chance to be your wife. It’s a blessing for me. You didn’t hurt me!”
Before, Flossie argued with Benjamin and insisted on taking Joanne away. Liam fell out with Benjamin just to help Flossie.
Hence, Benjamin wanted to kill Liam. At first, he wanted to create an accident and kill Liam when Amber wasn’t paying attention.
Unfortunately, Amber happened to overhear that plan. She stepped out and claimed she was in love with Liam. They had been intimate with each other, and wanted to marry.
At that time, Liam worked with Amber to find a chance to escape. He affirmed that he was in love with her, and sincerely wanted to marry her. They put on a lovey-dovey show until everyone in the fort believed that they were madly in love with each other-except Benjamin.
He felt that things weren’t that simple. Thus, he set up a lot of challenges to test Liam and see if the latter was sincere toward Amber.
After passing such cruel trials and tests, Liam gradually changed. He became vastly different from his previous self. For a moment, he wanted to trample Amber and replace Benjamin to get a higher position.
By then, Benjamin felt that Liam was qualified to be his son-in-law and set the date for their wedding. Everything went on smoothly-until Flossie’s arrival ruined that illusion…
Liam looked at Amber, and sighed helplessly. He found himself owing her a lot, and thus deliberately avoided having much to do with her. He hoped she could see how bad he was, and willingly cancel their marriage.
Yet, she foolishly and stubbornly desired him. She would rather turn hostile toward her father just to marry and protect him.
“You don’t have to treat me this way. I’m a bastard.” Liam said seriously, gripping her hand as she applied ointment to his neck. He was starting to feel bad.
“What’s…what’s wrong?” Amber was stunned, blushing. Although she was about to marry Liam, they weren’t very close to each other. They rarely spent time alone with each other, let alone had any physical contact.
Liam suddenly held her hand, throwing her into anxiety. She had no idea how to react.
“What do you think?” Liam looked at the gentle and delicate woman. He tensed up and wanted to act fierce at first, but failed. Helpless, he sighed again. “Can’t you see? I’m a disloyal and selfish scumbag!”
Amber’s eyes were teary, and she looked at him in confusion. “I don’t think so. You love Ms. Ellsworth deeply and sincerely. You never get into amorous relationships with others. You’re the most loyal man I’ve ever met. You’re not a scumbag at all.”
Flabbergasted, Liam was at a loss for words. “I’m going to marry you, but I’m still in love with another woman. Don’t you think I’m a scumbag?”
“No. I knew right from the start that you’re in love with Ms. Ellsworth. You never change your mind until now. I was the one who threw myself at you. Well… In this case, I’m the bitch.”
Amber seriously reflected on herself and apologized to Liam, filled with guilt.
‘I’m sorry. If it weren’t for me, you might have a chance to be with Ms. Ellsworth. But I put myself between you two and stopped you from turning back. I’m the bitch that ruined your relationship with her.
“But you can’t blame me. The current situation is very complicated. If we don’t get married, my dad won’t let you or Ms. Ellsworth off the hook. You can only ensure your safety by marrying me… Don’t worry. When you can fight against my dad, I’ll divorce you. Then, you can try and win Ms. Ellsworth back!”
Amber clenched her fists as if she were about to let Liam go to war. She acted like she was cheering him on.
“How could you…” Liam was stunned. He didn’t expect her to be this simple and kind.
“All you ever care about is me and others. Don’t you ever think about yourself?” he asked.
For an unknown reason, he felt quite worried to see such a silly side of her.
“Have you ever thought of your position in this relationship? You’re still young, but you want to marry me to help me escape. You’ll become a divorcee for nothing. You’re even hoping that I can win another woman’s heart. Don’t you feel sad at all?”
“Sad?” Amber asked back.
Amber looked up and pondered it.
Then, she cracked a bitter smile.
“Of course I’ll be sad, but I’ll be delighted if you can be free and be with your beloved woman. I think it’s worthwhile.
Amber spent her entire life in the fort. Although she grew up in a place full of evil, others protected her. She grew up to be a pure, simple, and kind woman regardless of her environment’s wickedness and evilness.
Her thoughts were very simple-she wanted the people she liked to be happy. As for her happiness, she didn’t care about it. She loved Liam more than anyone else. Hence, seeing Liam happy would be her greatest happiness.
“No, you’re wrong!” Liam yelled.
Amber’s simple thoughts drove him mad.
He gripped her shoulders and looked into her eyes, and said seriously, “Remember! You’re an independent individual. You must put yourself above everything else. Your happiness is the most important thing. You can’t regard others’ happiness as yours because others aren’t under your control. You probably can’t even move them even if you sacrifice everything. You might even risk your life, but they won’t be touched. This is an unfair bargain. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I do.” Amber nodded. “You sound just like my dad. You guys want me to be stronger and do everything for my interests. But I willingly want you to be with Ms. Ellsworth. Why can’t that be considered my interest too?”
“How could you…”
For a moment, Amber’s logic struck Liam speechless. After a brief pause, he sighed.
“You can’t say that. I’m just your acquaintance. You can’t risk everything for me. I’m a bastard, but you still want to risk everything for me. You’re not doing it for yourself. You’re dumb and out of your mind!”
“Yes, you’re right. I understand. I won’t be this dumb again.” Amber nodded, though she didn’t fully understand.
She kept squeezing the ointment out and gently applied it on Liam’s red, strangled neck. She felt very sorry for him.
“How could Dad do this? He was so harsh on you. If I was late, he might break your neck… No, I can’t forgive this. I have to go to him!”
Amber’s wrath grew as she studied the bruises on Liam, and she had every intention to fight with her father.
“Hey, Gem! Don’t!” Liam grabbed her, stopping her. It was rare to see the quiet and gentle Amber that angry. He feared she might infuriate Benjamin on impulse.
