Hearing the host announce her name, Emma stood up. In her hands, she held the envelope with a list of award winners inside. She approached the stage elegantly as everyone watched, deliberately avoiding Mark Whitaker as she made her way to the microphone.
An ocean of stars, all of New York’s hottest models, had gathered for this event. Looking at them all, Emma realized that she had a long way to go as a model. Close by, Amber’s gaze was sharp and proud, conveying a sense of disdain and ridicule. She’d been looking forward to this day for so long. “I’m going to take the trophy from Emma’s hands,” she thought, “right out of the hands of the woman who fights me over everything. And once this trophy is mine, I’ll be on the road to glory.”
“Miss Miller has become very famous lately, both in Europe and the United States,” said Mark. “She’s a model with an extremely promising future, and I’m truly impressed with her professionalism.” “Thank you,” Emma replied. “I’m honored to be here.” Her tone was calm and polite, but she had her guard up around him.
“It’s our honor to have you present the recipients with their awards, and I believe that luck will be on your side in the future,” he said, hiding his deeper meaning as he gestured for her to announce the names on the list. By allowing her to make the announcement, he was satisfying Amber’s request while also showing his respect for Emma.
Emma smiled as she opened the envelope in her hands. She slowly pulled out the list of winners and announced, “The seventh annual Top 10 Model Award recipients are…” One after another, Emma read out the names. As she spoke, each model’s photo and name appeared on the big screen, showing off some of their best work.
Amber was the last one announced, and as her work was displayed on the screen, many of the audience members began to giggle. Amber had become a joke under the spotlight. The award recipients made their way onto the stage in the order in which their names were announced. Ten assistants walked onto the stage, each holding a trophy and a bouquet of flowers.
Emma presented the flowers and trophies to each model in turn, from left to right. Amber was last in line.
As she stood there, the trophy within reach, she was so overwhelmed that she felt like her heart was going to stop.
She didn’t notice the giggles in the audience; she didn’t see the looks the other models were giving her. She focused only on the trophy in Emma’s hands, getting closer to her by the second. “I’m about to succeed,” she thought, totally breathless. “I’m really about to succeed.” A sense of joy swept over her like a hurricane, blowing away everything else in its path.
Finally, Emma stood in front of Amber. The two women looked at each other for a long second. “Congratulations, Emma,” said Amber, handing her the bouquet.
Amber took the flowers and then reached out for the trophy. But just as her fingers were about to touch its surface, an assistant ran onto the stage. He tapped Emma on the shoulder and whispered something into her ear, as if Amber’s worst dreams were coming true.
Emma held the trophy away. The audience was stunned into silence at first, but then the whispering began. What happened? Why isn’t she presenting the award? Why did Emma take it back? Is Amber disqualified? Is Emma just jealous? What did that assistant tell her?
Amber looked at the audience and then at Emma, shock written all over her face. “What’s going on? What did that man say to you?” she hissed at Emma.
“I’m sorry to make this announcement,” Emma spoke loudly and clearly so that everyone present could hear her words. There was no mistaking what she said to Amber. The words echoed in Amber’s head: “Will not be presented… Will not be presented to you.”
The scene seemed frozen in time. Amber stood still, the bouquet of flowers dangling at her side. Looking at Emma in shock, she could not process this information.
The assistant once again approached Emma, this time holding some documents. Taking the microphone in hand, he announced, “Amber Lee is disqualified from this competition and will not be receiving an award tonight.”
“This can’t be happening,” Amber thought. “I’ve waited so long for this. I’ve given up so much. I almost had that trophy in my hand. I could feel it. It can’t be gone just like that. I can’t accept this. I can’t believe it. Emma is the only one who hates me enough to take this away from me!”
Finally shocked out of her silence, Amber focused her anger on Emma, loudly accusing her. “It was you, wasn’t it? You did something behind the scenes. You took this award away from me. I know it’s your fault! Where are the judges? I demand some answers!”
Amber reached out and grabbed Emma’s arm, shaking it hard. “Why did you do this to me? Why, Emma?” Just stood still, letting Amber shake her arm. Not speaking or reacting.
“Why, Emma?” Amber finally let go and sank to the floor of the stage, sobbing. No one came to help her up. Amber looked up and turned her tear-streaked face towards the judges. “I’m going to sue you!” she screamed. “I’m going to sue all of you! I’m going to make you so miserable you’ll beg for my forgiveness!”
The audience continued to look on in shock and some amusement. Very few people there had any sympathy for her. “I’ll sue you!” Her sharp voice echoed through the hall.
The assistant once again spoke directly to the audience. “I would like to make an announcement on behalf of the annual Top 10 Model Awards. On the screen behind me are the rules for the award selection. Pregnant models are not allowed to compete.
However, I would like everyone to look at the pregnancy report in my hand. It states here that Miss Lee has been pregnant since July, which means she applied for consideration even though she knew she was pregnant.
She lied to the judges. So, after discussions with the organizing committee, we have decided to disqualify Miss Lee. She has not upheld her responsibility to the organization or the public.”
Just a few short sentences, but they felt like a reign of grenades to Amber. She could not hide from the barrage. Her dreams were over.
