Zane frowned. “No. Aaron and Sheila are also scared of me.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “What pleasure does scaring people bring you guys?”

Zane grinned. It was adorable. I’d never seen him smile so much before we started… well, dating.

“It’s just fun,” he said.

“It’s not, it’s mean.”

“I stopped scaring humans for you, Lia. I turned into a ball of sunshine when I’m with you. You can’t expect me to give up my authority over my Hounds.”

I chuckled, throwing my arms around his neck. “Okay, you may scare them as much as you want. Idiot.”

“I love you,” he whispered, leaning down and pulling me into a kiss.

I smiled, kissing him back.

“I love you too,” I said when he pulled away. “Let’s go to the cafeteria. I’m starving.”

“Okay.”

We made our way to the cafeteria, ignoring all the stares we were still getting from everyone we passed by.

It was weird for everybody, I guess.

No one could have expected us to date.

I could bet all of them were waiting for Zane to announce it was a prank. Or for him to cheat on me or make a fool out of me.

But they could all keep wishing.

Zane Adams was mine. I was his mate. I was the one chosen for him by the Goddess herself.

Wow, I’d gotten proud.

“What are you thinking?” Zane asked as we neared the cafeteria.

“Nothing. Just how lucky I am to have you,” I replied.

Zane froze, his body stiffening up.

We stopped outside the cafeteria.

I frowned. “What? What did I say?”

He looked at the cafeteria, his jaw clenching. “Blake’s inside. I just got a whiff of his scent.”

-LIA’S POV-

I sucked in a breath.

Why was he here now? What was the point anymore? Blake didn’t live here, his pack was elsewhere. He probably came here looking only for me, joined school only to be around me. And now he had ruined every chance he had of being even friends with me. So why was he still here?

“Hey,” Zane said, stepping closer to me and taking my arms. “You have nothing to be afraid of. You know that, right?”

“I know,” I replied, placing my hands on his forearms. “I’m not afraid. It’s just…”

“Uncomfortable?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s understandable, love. But don’t worry, I’ll kick him out. of here in seconds. You won’t have to endure him for too long.”

I shook my head. “No, Zane, You can’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because I am tired. Of all this constant drama. I just need things to settle down. I need people to stop whispering about us, and I need to focus only on what’s going on with my body. Blake, in spite of what he did, is still somehow the least of our problems. I don’t want to create a fuss in school.”

Zane opened his mouth as if to say something, then caught himself. He released a breath.

“Alright, if that’s what you’d prefer, we will ignore his existence. But if he comes up to you and tries to talk to you, I won’t tolerate. it.”

“Okay,” I nodded, offering him a smile. “That works for me.

“Great. Let’s go.” Zane wrapped his arm around my waist. possessively, and pulled me to his side.

Heat rose to my cheeks as we entered the cafeteria together, and all heads turned to us.

Including Blake’s.

We made our way to the Hounds’ usual table, where they all had similar, pissed off expressions on their faces, just like the one Zane had had outside.

“Don’t pay attention to losers,” Zane said simply, pulling a chair for me.

I sat down, smiling at the Hounds in greeting. They all gave me nods of acknowledgement.

“Some of them try their best to steal it,” Warner said, still glaring daggers at Blake.

“So we put them in their place when they do,” Zane stated. “What’s good today? Anything new on the menu?” He grabbed it from Aaron’s hands, effortlessly changing the topic.

“Yeah, they’ve introduced a new pizza. It looks awful, though,” Sheila said.

“Looks fine to me,” Ajax said, pointing at it on his plate. He’d already gotten one for himself.

“Give me,” Zane said.

Ajax frowned. “Get your own.”

“Do I need to remind you who’s Alpha here?”

“For a pizza?” Ajax muttered.

“Yes.”

“Get your own, Zane,” I said. “And get one for me too.”

Zane stared at me, narrowing his eyes. “Whose team are you on?”

“Food’s. I want my own. Please get it for me?” I asked sweetly, batting my eyelashes at him.

Zane pouted. “If only you weren’t so beautiful,” he grumbled, getting up. I smiled in victory, as Zane planted a kiss on the top of my head and then walked away to get me my pizza.

“Thank you, Luna,” Ajax grinned. “You’re the best.”

I laughed. “He was just being nasty for no reason.”

“More like bossy,” Sheila commented.

“Is he always like that?” I asked.

Aaron chuckled. “No. Just sometimes, when he’s in a mood.”

“Okay, fair,” I shrugged.

Warner’s chair scraped loudly against the floor, a look of death taking over his face. Sheila, Aaron and Ajax stood up as well, immediately moving to circle me. I frowned, turning my head to look behind me.

Of course.

Blake was approaching.

I turned away from him, as my heart raced in my chest. He still had a particular scent, one which was now even more distinct and stronger than I remembered. It probably had to do with my newfound abilities.

“I just wanna talk,” Blake said.

“Piss off, Walker,” Sheila said. “How dare you walk up to her like this? Do you have no shame at all?”

“Clearly not,” Zane announced as he approached the table.

Now I stood up, my stomach twisting with fear.

Zane placed the pizzas on the table, not sparing me a single glance, his gaze fixed on Blake.

The air had immediately grown heavy with tension, and I looked around at the other students around us.

They were all watching with interested eyes.
