The four people returned to the Sweeney family’s house. Mr. Sweeney glared at Hadwin Stephenson with a look of distinct displeasure on his face. He was afraid that they would make a fool of themselves in front of the neighbors if they were outside, so he brought him home.
Otherwise, Mr. Sweeney would probably rain curses down Hadwin Stephenson out there!
“Lina, explain yourself. Are you back together with this Stephenson boy?” asked Mr. Sweeney.
“No!” Lina hastened to deny.
However, as soon as she finished talking, she saw her mother take out a bottle of folic acid and put it on the coffee table. “Then what’s this?”
Lina stared at that bottle of folic acid, which was… among the pile of things Hadwin Stephenson had bought for her and delivered to her. She kept it all in her cabinet, but after seeing that folic acid could prevent fetal malformation, she took it out to consume.
She had to take one tablet a day, so she would just leave it in the drawer after she was done taking it.
Now it had appeared in her mother’s hands.
“Mom, did you go through my drawer?” shouted Lina.
Mrs. Sweeney glared at her daughter. “I was looking for nail clippers. Who knew I would find this? I thought you were taking some slimming pills, but after I took it to the pharmacy and asked, it turns out it’s something women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant take!”
Lina bit her lip and immediately dared not speak.
“Lina, what… What is a lady like you eating this for? Are you… You…” Mrs. Sweeney seemed a little embarra**ed to go on.
Mr. Sweeney shouted right away, “Tell us the truth. Are you pregnant with this Stephenson boy’s child?”
Mr. Sweeney started recalling some things like how his daughter had been throwing up recently; how she had decided to stop meeting Anthony Sherman and just be friends with him; how Hadwin Stephenson sent her home today; and the bunch of deliveries sent to this house. He started thinking that it was possible!
Lina was so impressed she almost kneeled in front of her father. He figured out everything with only one bottle of folic acid!
Needless to say, Mr. Sweeney knew he was right at the sight of his daughter’s expression. He instantly got up and raised his fist to punch Hadwin Stephenson.
Mr. Sweeney was almost 60 years old, so he was not a good fighter. However, Hadwin Stephenson did not dodge him and just stood there, letting Mr. Sweeney beat him up.
“You broke up with Lina when she was seriously injured, and now you’ve taken advantage of her. Haven’t you hurt her enough?” Mr. Sweeney punched Hadwin Stephenson again and again. Soon, he was out of breath.
Hadwin Stephenson just stood there motionless and accepted the punches.
Lina and Mrs. Sweeney hurriedly grabbed Mr. Sweeney. “What’s the use of you beating him? It’s useless now!” said Mrs. Sweeney.
“The boy is too awful. I must beat him up! The daughter of the Sweeney family can’t be taken advantage of that easily. Good for him, huh? He can just walk away after he’s done. What about Lina? How is Lina going to go on with her life?” Mr. Sweeney snapped as his fist hit Hadwin Stephenson again.
Hadwin Stephenson said nothing and did not defend himself.
“Dad, Hadwin Stephenson didn’t take advantage of me. It’s not what you think!” Lina quickly shouted when she saw that the comers of Hadwin Stephenson’s lips had started bleeding. She was afraid Hadwin Stephenson would be admitted to the hospital due to her father’s beating if he went on.
“He didn’t take advantage of you?” Mr. Sweeney stopped what he was doing and turned to glare at his daughter. “In that case, you were willing?
“Well… Not really…” Lina said with a look of embarra**ment, “It’s just that… L.. I drank too much that night and called Hadwin Stephenson by mistake. Then I accidentally…”
Lina spoke with extreme difficulty. It felt like she had gone back to her elementary school days when she had to face her parents at home after being scolded by her teacher for skipping school.
Halfway through the explanation, she looked timidly at her parents. “Well… do I need to be more specific?”
“Enough, enough. No thanks…” Mr. Sweeney said hurriedly. The old married couple looked embarra**ed as well. They did not expect their daughter to be the one who forced herself on the man.
Speaking of which, Hadwin Stephenson seemed to be the victim here.
Hadwin Stephenson was probably the one feeling the least awkward in the house.
“How… How could you do such a thing? You can’t do that even if you’re drunk!” Mr. Sweeney could only vent his anger at his daughter now.
Lina nodded and humbly admitted her mistake. “I won’t do it again. I promise.”
“Again? Do you want to do it again?” Mr. Sweeney rolled his eyes angrily. “Now that you’re pregnant, what are you going to do about the baby?”
After all, the baby in his daughter’s belly was the biggest problem.
“I’ll take responsibility,” Hadwin Stephenson said directly.
“Take responsibility. How are you going to take responsibility?” Mr. Sweeney snapped.
“If I live, I’ll marry Lina. If I die, then Lina will be the beneficiary of all my fortune after my death,” Hadwin Stephenson said directly.
The three members of the Sweeney family were immediately stunned.
Lina only thought that what Hadwin Stephenson said was strange. Who would say things like that? It was as if he was going to die at any moment.
“You’re taking responsibility?” Lina asked in a mutter.
Hadwin Stephenson raised his eyebrows slightly and looked at Lina. “Then why don’t you take responsibility for me?”
What he said instantly made Lina speechless.
Mr. Sweeney’s anger was slightly calmed by what Hadwin Stephenson said. “Are you really willing to take responsibility?”
“Yes!” Hadwin Stephenson said firmly.
Mr. Sweeney looked at the man in front of him. He was previously extremely optimistic about him and even thought that this man was worthy of taking care of his daughter. However, what happened afterward was like a hard slap in the face.
Was he going to hand over his daughter to this man?
“If you knew it would come to this, why did you do that in the first place? If you really had feelings for Lina, you wouldn’t have broken up with her when she was still in the hospital. Do you know how she survived during that period?” Mr. Sweeney felt heartbroken as he recalled the way his daughter looked lying on the hospital bed back then.
“Dad!” said Lina. She knew what happened back then was a wound in her parents’ hearts.
“I’m sorry,” said Hadwin Stephenson. All he could say were these few words.
“The Sweeney family doesn’t need your apology. That’s all for today. You can go home first!” Mr. Sweeney said coldly.
Hadwin Stephenson pressed his thin lips slightly and turned to look at Lina. “Lina, I have to go. And… a week. All I’m asking for is one week.”
Lina frowned. She had no idea why he wanted one week.
Hadwin Stephenson left the Sweeney family’s house. Mr. Sweeney looked at his daughter and said, “Hadwin Stephenson’s willing to take responsibility. What do you think?”
“I… I don’t know,” stammered Lina. She was conflicted.
“You don’t know?” Mr. Sweeney’s voice rose abruptly. “You’re already pregnant, and you don’t know?”
Mrs. Sweeney also said, “Lina, just tell us whatever is on your mind. We’re on your side no matter what!”
“I… I know marrying Hadwin Stephenson is the best choice for me, our family, and the baby. If I have a baby out of wedlock, the neighbors will probably spread horrible rumors, and people will judge us, but…”
Lina’s voice could not help breaking a little as she spoke, “I’m scared that even if we marry for the baby, perhaps he’ll ask for a divorce over something else at some point. I don’t know.”
When she and he were madly in love, she never thought that they would break up.
However, reality had whacked her in the head and told her that nothing was impossible!
