“Look, it’s your tears!” She stuck out her little tongue and licked the tears from her fingers as she said, “It’s salty!”
William’s face turned even redder. He was a little flustered.
“Why are you crying?” Jasper leaned her little head forward and asked, “Is it because your mommy is gone?” She heard her parents say William’s mother had died in prison.
‘Dying… means he’ll never see her again!
‘That’s what it meant on TV!’
William’s little face was tense, and he was silent.
Jasper said grimly, “If my mommy’s gone, I’d cry too. For many, many days! I won’t laugh if you want to cry!”
“I won’t cry.” William took a while to utter the words.
Jasper blinked and took two pieces of chocolate out of her pocket. “This chocolate is delicious. Every time I eat it, I won’t feel. sad anymore. Give it a try!”
He looked at the chocolate in her hand somewhat blankly. “Did she come to my room at night to give me chocolate?”
When aunt Cummins came back, he was given a separate bedroom. He had been sleeping alone in his new bedroom recently.
“I know how hard this must be for you.” As Jasper spoke, she peeled off the wrapper and held the chocolate to his mouth. “Ah!”
She also demonstrated opening her mouth, hinting at him to open. his mouth and eat the chocolate.
However, his little mouth was still pressed together tightly.
“Eat it. It’s delicious!” she said as if wondering why he was keeping his mouth shut.
He continued to press his lips together while she continued to hold the chocolate. For a moment, they seemed to be locked in at stalemate.
After a long while, he suddenly asked, “Why are you giving me chocolate? What does it matter if I’m upset?”
“We’re friends. William, you’re a very, very important friend of mine!” she answered matter-of-factly.
‘Friends?’ He bit his lip. They were not friends at all, nor could they ever be! He was nothing more than a toy to please her!
If she were upset, Uncle Reed would punish her! William’s tiny body shuddered again at the thought of Uncle Reed’s warnings.
“William, don’t you like chocolate?” Jasper Reed’s small brows furrowed, and she looked like she was in a dilemma.
William hesitated a little before opening his mouth to eat the chocolate she was holding.
The sweet taste instantly spread in his mouth, but he did not feel better.
He was just a toy. He could not make Jasper upset. He would suffer if Jasper was upset!
William kept his head down and ate the chocolate in silence. Suddenly, he heard sobbing noises. He looked up in confusion, only to find that Jasper Reed’s face was full of tears.
He froze, wondering why she was crying when he had already eaten the chocolate she gave.
“Why… are you crying?” he asked after swallowing the chocolate.
Jasper sobbed, “Because… Because you lost your mommy. Boo-hoo… William, you must be… You must be so upset, but… But the chocolate I gave you can’t cheer you up… What can I do to cheer you up… Boo-hoo…”
He was a little stunned. ‘Does she… want to make me happy that badly?”
“It’s not important… whether I’m happy. I’m going to end up alone anyway,” he murmured.
She sobbed, saying, “It is important! It’s very, very important! Besides, you’re not alone, William. You and I will always be together. There are two of us… Boo-hoo!”
She sobbed louder and louder. Suddenly, her little body leaped over and she hugged him while continuing to cry.
William had a strange feeling. He should be the one who was upset, but she was the one crying her eyes out.
However, it somehow warmed him that she was crying as she held him. He felt warmer like this than being in bed alone.
William burst into tears as though he was influenced by Jasper.
The tears that had been repressed earlier finally fell because of Jasper Reed’s crying.
Therefore, the two children held each other and cried together.
After a long time, the crying finally stopped.
With tears and snot all over her face, Jasper said to William as she held the chocolate, “Chocolate. I… I still have a piece of chocolate here. William, try it!”
He looked at the chocolate she was holding. Her tears had gotten on the wrapper.
He took the chocolate out of her hand, and his fingertips touched the tears on the wrapper. His fingers were instantly burning…
Peeling off the wrapper, he split the chocolate into two and held one half to her lips.
Jasper blinked her tearful almond-shaped eyes and said, “William, eat it. It’s for you!”
“Let’s eat it together,” he said.
Hence, she opened her mouth and ate the chocolate, while he put the other half into his mouth.
It was the same chocolate, but this time, he found it… so sweet and delicious.
He took out his handkerchief and gently wiped the tears and snot from her face. “Don’t cry like this anymore.”
It warmed him that she had cried for him, making it seem as if he was not alone in this world and someone still cared about him. However, at the same time… her tears upset him.
He preferred to see her smile.
Jasper said, “Okay. From now on, I won’t cry if you don’t cry! William, let’s be together forever, okay?”
His lashes quivered a little. ‘Forever?’
However, he might leave this place any time. When she no longer liked being with him, Uncle Reed would send him out of the Reed family.
Therefore, there was no way he and she could be together forever.
However, he could not help saying the word ‘okay’ when his eyes met those sparkly ones!
Lily’s parents returned to Emerald City to handle her funeral arrangements. Harold Atkinson and his wife did not want to take custody of their grandson, William. After all, they were not doing well right now. With their age, it was going to be even harder with a child around.
