“Why did you call me here, Air?”
Talon jumped and whipped around to face the cloaked woman beside him “What the…How?”
“Spirit is an amazing element. One that comes from me. So, say someone uses spirit to create this scape to see their mates one last time, why wouldn’t I be able to enter if someone calls to me? First and foremost, I am a Goddess.”
“A Goddess? You are our only Goddess.”
“Of course. Now, back to my question. Why did you call me here?”
“I didn’t mean to call you here, just that I needed strength to resist being inside. My mate just died, and I shouldn’t be betraying her memory.”
“Ah yes, the partial bond. She has passed?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The same day Araiya was taken.”
“Interesting.”
“Why is that interesting?”
“She never passed through my realm. She never moved on past the veil, or I would have already known.”
“She had to have passed beyond the veil.” Talon stood and faced the Goddess. “You probably missed her.”
“I doubt that. I always make sure I am there for important people.”
“Well then, she obviously wasn’t as important to you as she was to me. She passed on; I felt our bond break,” Talon retorted with a shake of disgust.
“Do you think I only think the Dracoy are important? You are still as big a fool as you always were. Everyone here is someone I helped form in a way. Some I gave life to. The others might not be my direct descendants like the Dracoy, but they are just as important to me. Especially my Chosen. I chose each for a role, a path they hopefully follow, as I guide them as much as I am able. I hand pick the destined Chosen for my daughter’s children, and you assume I do not care. You come to conclusions when you do not even see the full picture.”
“But the bond was broken…”
“There are other ways to break a bond, Enforcer, you know that.”
“I am not an Enforcer.”
“You are the strongest Air Dracoy, Air. Now that Zephyr has turned his back, you can step into that role.”
“I am not strong enough, not if I can’t resist Araiya. I lost my mate less than four moon cycles ago.”
“There you go again, assuming too much. Who says resisting a bond is strength? Who says being brave enough to form another isn’t strength?”
“Araiya was her friend. If I bond with her, after Shavon asked me to stay away, it will undermine everything we were.”
“So, you say.”
“So, I know.”
“What is true, young one, is that a mate surviving the other’s death is unheard of. What is true, is loving someone so completely that you want them to be happy, even after your gone.”
“No one would wish that for their mate.”
“Again Talon, son of Air, do you enjoy being incorrect so much? Take my hand.” The Goddess’s hand came from under her robe, and Talon watched on as her hand shifted. A young woman’s hand she held out, but as he watched on, her hand aged. It changed between all the colours on the people in the lands, then shifted to scales, then back to the first hand he saw. “I am of all, just as all of you, are of me. Take my hand.”
“Why?”
“Because, young dragon, I want to show you something.”
Talon hesitated one last time, then he grasped his hand with the Goddess and between one blink and another, they were on the top of a hill with a cliff behind them. The Goddess, whose hand he was still holding, was also standing lower on the hill between the cliff and the misted forest below.
“Do you wish anything more, Sasha?” The Goddess down below shifted to the side and Talon could see a young woman. “You have had a good life; do you wish to go back?”
“If I go back…would that mean my baby would die?”
