Mia rushed into the room shouting. My senses immediately knocked back into my mind. I rangled my wolf back under control, took over my slipping heat, covered it like it was never there, and immediately looked at the door where Mia stood. Her eyes were big and she was sweaty. Hiding her panic, she managed to give me a nervous smile and said, “You you said we would we would go for a run!! Let’s go!”
The moment that my heat had started taking me over, I had mind-linked Mia to come and do something before I was exposed to Reuben.
The room fell into a dead silence as the two men standing in the room gave Mia a blank stare clearly picking up on her lie. I could not help but give her a tight yet thankful smile. She really was bad at lying but she showed up to help me at the right time.
“Yes, I am coming,”
I pulled away from Reuben and turned to exit the office. When Reuben’s arms were left empty, Dex let out a dissatisfied growl. Mia flinched in horror, practically running out of the room but I kept my back straight and quickly walked out without looking back at him.
Unknown to me, Walter, who had been observing the scene the entire time, came over to Reuben. “What was that?”
Reuben remained silent for a couple of seconds as he looked down at his hand, “She is definitely hiding something from me. I can tell something is off, I just can’t put my finger on what it is,”
he murmured.
“Does it have something to do with what you call the mate bond?”
Walter looked at Reuben’s hand. “Why is your mate bond still so strong with her when you two were separated for six years? It should have weakened by now seeing that she hates you.”
Reuben raised his gaze to look at Walter, answering his question with one of his own, “What do you think?”
Walter blinked, realizing the answer on his own.
When Mia and I both made it to her house, Mia shut the door behind her and let out a shriek of fear, “Shit! I can’t believe I lied in front of the Alpha!”
She pulled at her hair in fear.
On the other side of the room, I grabbed the pill box from her bedside table, sat on the bed quickly taking another pill. To avoid Reuben’s suspicion I had hidden the pills at Mia’s place. I groaned, closing my eyes, “This heat it is really making me insane. I don’t know how I will make it through tonight,”
I buried my face in my hand enduring the pain that was growing inside me. Pain that was a clear indication that my heat was going to be over tonight.
“You know what you did is extremely wrong, right?”
Mia remarked, taking a seat across from me. She had calmed down slightly at the sight of my pained state. I look at her slowly feeling a deep guilt in my heart, “You are also aware that a she- wolf goes into heat when her mate is affectionate with her. And judging by your intense heat that is taking way long to dissipate, the Alpha’s obsession with you is clear. Taking heat preventing pills behind your mate’s back is so unbelievably wrong and against the Goddess’s rules, Willow. Are you that scared of mating with the Alpha?”
she murmured.
I fiddled with the pill box in my hand in silence listening to her while Ceri kept growling in my mind in displeasure.
“I cannot risk going into heat at this point, Mia,”
I could not help but give her a helpless smile, “Yes, I am scared because you don’t know what Reuben becomes when I go into heat,”
I got up from the bed and placed the pill box in her hand that I no longer needed. “There can be no mating between Reuben and I.”
She pursed her lips turning mute for a long time. I knew she had suspicions that not everything was normal between Reuben and I but she always played dumb, “I admit that I don’t know what exactly is going on between you and the Alpha, Willow but I wonder if you know that you have to bear the consequences of preventing your heat, right?”
“What consequences?”
I cocked my brows, never learned about such things.
Mia tore her gaze away from the pills and replied, “I don’t know but the Elders say that when we play with Goddess’s rules she plays with us ”
Mia’s words left me silent before I replied, I am indeed going against the Goddess’s rules but the Goddess will also see the reason behind my actions.”
I could not cross that line with a man who was another woman’s fiance.
I could not mate with a man that I was bound to be separated from in three months.
“Or is it that you do not want to get hurt?”
Mia interrupted me, “You are simply preparing your heart for rejection?”
My hand shook at Mia’s words. With that I left her house without looking back.
I was going to be rejected. The kiss that we shared that day appeared in my mind only to tighten my chest. Over the past few days that I had spent with Reuben, I had forgotten that I had only returned to Reuben’s life for three months. He wanted a rejection so that he could marry Ella.
What was this feeling? I placed my hand over my intense heartbeat.
“Why am I in pain at the thought of leaving Reuben when I had been prepared for it from the beginning?”
I asked myself walking in the clearing, “Why am I so affected by Reuben marrying Ella? When he broke my heart six years ago when he brought an Alpha’s daughter to the pack as his fiancee? Why did I believe him even after that betrayal? Why did I kiss him back?”
“Is it not because you still love him?”
A voice came from the side that froze me in place.
I raised my eyes to find Walter standing with his hands shoved in his pockets. “You still love him ”
My heart jumped into my throat at Walter’s words, “ I don’t ”
I took a step back, “I don’t love him.”
“If you want me to believe that then don’t make your lie so obvious, Willow,”
he took a step closer to me then he added, “During the six years, you’ve accompanied me as my fake date, you even visited my parents as my girlfriend. We have spent so many good times together but you always drew a line between us. Knowing my feelings for you, you never responded to my attempts at seduction and advances. You had ample opportunities during this time when you could have chosen me, the man who is ready and willing to die for you and wants to become the father to your children but you always turned me down,”
he paused and took another step closer to me. “All this time I thought that I was not enough for you but it turned out it was all a lie because now I have realized that you were stuck in the past with Reuben,”
a smile appeared on his lips as a pool of tears gathered in my eyes. “You could never move on from him. You could never fall in love with me because you still love him.”
Walter spoke a truth that I had been denying with all my might yet failed at miserably as I broke into tears. Unable to control my emotions, I shifted into my wolf, and raced off aimlessly into the woods.

Stopping in the middle of the woods, Ceri howled up at the sky releasing all the pain that I had been experiencing in my heart. Whimpering, I curled up into a ball between some roots at the base of a tree and closed my eyes. My mind was blank and my heart was a mess. I just wanted to disappear from the world to escape from reality until I felt the same warmth on my face that I had been feeling whenever I used to fall asleep. The sensation used to vanish as soon as I would open my eyes. This time when I opened my eyes, I found a black Alpha Wolf standing behind me, lovingly rubbing his face against mine, sharing in my pain. He lay down beside me and cuddled me. “Willow ”

His fingers were tangled with mine and his nose was buried deep in my hair. He found me again. I wonder if during the past six years I had really been hidden from him? He used to be able to find me whenever I was in the most pathetic mental condition and my dark thoughts would start consuming me. What was actually harmful was that my messed up emotions would instantly be corralled back under control and calmed by him even though no words would be spoken between us just like the peace that had existed between us for the past two hours under this tree.
The entire time the black wolf behind me cuddled me in silence, stealing all my restlessness while simultaneously pulling me into the unimaginable comfort of his warmth. I also discovered that the warmth and touch that always disappeared as soon as I would open my eyes had been none other than Reuben. Earlier, when I had shifted into my human form, he had done the same. When I changed positions and leaned back against the tree, he also changed positions then came up to become the support behind me.
I tried to pay as little attention to him as possible, however his breathing and our proximity made it hard for me. At the same time, nervousness secretly grew inside me at the thought that he had overheard the conversation between Walter and I in the clearing. Though he had not had not brought it up so far which put my heart at ease. It made me believe that I was still in a safe zone and he was unaware that I was finally thinking and figuring out my feelings for him. I was confused and fighting with my own heart.
“Do you feel better now?”
Still gently playing with my fingers like he had been doing for the past half an hour, his breath fanning against my ear.
“What will happen to me? I was doing fine on my own. You just stalked me out of suspicion that I would escape then you stay with me so that you could keep an eye on me,”
