“Mom, you’ll always be my mom. And Dad will always be my dad. But… I’m gonna need some time alone to digest all of this. I-I need… a moment. Please. Ex-excuse me.”

I turned away and rushed up the stairs, my breath heavy, heart pounding in my chest.

“Lia!” I heard Mom call out to me, but I didn’t stop.

I couldn’t.

My entire world was collapsing around me.

Everything I thought I knew about myself was a lie.

Zane…

I needed Zane.

**

-LIA’S POV-

I called Zane immediately, sobbing like a baby, begging him to come to me. He told me he was on his way, and before I even had the chance to think about what I’d say when he would show up, he was climbing in through my window.

“Lia,” he rushed up to me, a look of deep concern on his face as he cupped my face in his hands, “what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

I only sobbed louder, burying my face in his chest, clinging onto him for dear life.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” he whispered, rubbing my back. “I’m here, love. It’s okay. Whatever it is, we can figure it out together.”

He stood there hugging me for a few moments, waiting for me to calm down. When my sobs quieted down slightly, he led me to the bed and sat me down, offering me my bottle of water.

“Drink some water,” he said, unscrewing the cap.

I took it from him and obliged, catching my breath.

Then I returned it to him, and he placed it aside, kneeling in front of me.

“Now, tell me what’s wrong,” he said, wiping my tears away.

“My parents aren’t my parents,” I whispered. “They’re not my biological parents.” I sniffed.

“Oh,” he said softly, but he didn’t look too surprised. “That explains a lot. You’re adopted?”

“Mom found me on her doorstep. My real parents didn’t want me, Zane,” my voice broke.

“That’s okay, who needs them anyway? Two strangers who had nothing to do with you, who didn’t even give birth to you wanted you with everything they had. They raised you as their own and gave you all the love in the world, right?” He reached out and wiped away more of my tears. “I think that is a much more rare form of love, one very few people are blessed to have. And you know what?”

“What?” I asked, my voice still heavy with sorrow.

“I want you,” he said, taking my hand and pressing it to his chest. “I want you more than anyone I’ve ever wanted before. I want you, Lia. Blake wants you too, although he’s a bit of a jerk.”

My cries somehow turned into a laugh, and I slapped Zane’s shoulder, wiping away my tears with the back of my free hand.

“There’s my girl,” Zane smiled, taking the hand I’d slapped him with and pressing a kiss to it.

“You can’t just make me laugh after I told you something like that,” I said, sniffing.

“But I just did. And I can make you laugh more.”

“No, I don’t wanna laugh,” I grumbled. “I am sad, Zane. I don’t know my real roots and I never will. I don’t know who gave birth to me.”

Zane sighed, taking a seat on the bed, beside me.

“Look, I get it. I do. It’s not easy, discovering something like this.”

“My whole life has been a lie, Zane,” I said.

“I understand how you feel.” He nodded, running his hands through my hair. His touch, his presence, his scent somehow made everything better. “But none of this is your fault, alright? So it doesn’t matter. Why do you wanna punish yourself for a mistake somebody else made? And why are you hurting. and punishing the people who brought you up for what your biological parents did? Did your mom and dad ever make you feel like you’re adopted? Did they ever let you feel that you weren’t their own?”

I shook my head. “No, never. They’re the best.”

“Right?” Zane asked, cupping my cheeks. “Then why do you want to worry or know about anyone else? You have the best parents in the world anyway. Who cares if they didn’t give birth to you?”

I lowered my gaze, realising he was right. I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did.

“I think I hurt my mom by how I reacted,” I said softly.

“I’m sure she understands,” he replied, pulling me into a side hug. “Don’t worry. Everything will fall into place.”

I closed my eyes, feeling the warmth of his body.

“You’re right,” I said softly.

“Look on the brighter side. Now we know there might be a chance you were never fully human.”

“But if that were the case, why am I only feeling these things now? Where was this side of me for sixteen years of my life?” I asked.

“Dormant,” he replied.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, the way the mate bond doesn’t click into place until you’re sixteen, maybe it’s a similar situation. We knew each other for ten years of our life and never realised what we meant for each other. In the same way, maybe you have always been something else, but you never knew.”

-LIA’S POV-

“Are there other creatures out there?” I asked. “Other than humans and werewolves?”

“Maybe,” he replied. “Just like werewolves spent so long in hiding, maybe there’s other creatures too? Hiding and posing as humans?”

I sniffed. “Yeah… maybe.”

“Don’t worry about it for now,” he said. “I am looking into it, Lia. I will let you know what I find out.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

“I spoke to Emerald about the tracker and I’ve already got one. So whenever you’re ready, we can go back to the pack house and have it installed.”

“You wanna go now?” I asked.

“No,” Zane shook his head, “not now. Not today. You spend the day with your parents, reassure them that you still love them. That you’re not leaving. I will come over for dinner, and we can spend some lovely time together as a family. What do you think?”

–

I offered him a smile. “It sounds perfect.”

“Great. You feeling better now?” he asked.

I nodded. “I am.”

“Good. I love you, Lia.”

“I love you too, Zane.”

He pulled me into another hug, and kissed my hair. “You ready to go back downstairs and face your parents?”

“Yeah, I think so.

“You can do it, my love. They’re the same people, nothing has changed, I promise. They need your support right now.”

“You’re right. I should go to them. Mom must be very worried.” I stood up from the bed, taking a deep breath.

Zane stood up too, a gentle smile on his face. “See you in a few hours,” he said, leaning in and pressing a kiss to my mouth.

“Bye,” I grinned, cheeks flaming.

“Bye.” He slipped out the window, and I took another deep breath, preparing myself to go downstairs.

I stepped out my bedroom, and heard Mom crying still. Dad was awfully quiet. I couldn’t hear him reassure her or comfort her.

I made my way down the stairs, and found Mom kneeling in front of Dad, who sat on the sofa with utter disappointment on his face.

My heart tightened in my chest, but I gathered my courage.

“Mom, Dad,” I said softly.

Both of them turned to me, their faces brightening up a little.

“Both of you are the best parents in this world, and I am the luckiest that I get to be your daughter. I don’t care whether I’m adopted, you found me on a doorstep, the side of the street, or inside a freaking trash can. None of it matters, because both of you have loved me more than most people love their biological children.”
