Who could help her at this time?
Who could shield her from these questions, and who could pull her away from these reporters?
Just then, there was suddenly a commotion in front of her. Several black cars suddenly pulled up in front of the building. A group of people quickly got down from the car and rushed over to these reporters and onlookers, separating them from Lina.
Lina was dumbstruck and could not figure out what was going Then, another car drove up. A figure got out of it and walked quickly toward her.
Lina looked at the person in front of her with some astonishment… Hadwin Stephenson!
He had appeared in front of her again, and at such a time too!
‘Doesn’t he know why the reporters are surrounding me? His presence will only make things worse!’
In just the blink of an eye, Hadwin Stephenson had walked up to Lina.
Lina subconsciously wanted to step back, but his hand had taken hers firmly and he dragged her with him without a word.
Lina followed Hadwin Stephenson almost pa**ively. Her mind went blank. She did not know what she was supposed to do now. All she could hear was the commotion. There were countless phones and cameras pointing at her.
After she got in the car, she heard Hadwin Stephenson order the driver, “Drive.” Then, she instantly came back to her senses.
“Hadwin Stephenson, do you know what you’re doing?” she shouted instantly.
“Yes.” He suddenly let go of her hand and leaned back into the seat. The sunset glow outside shone into the car through the window and made his face seem a little pale.
She could not help being stunned. ‘Is he ill?’ He had always seemed ill in the last few times she saw him.
“Are you feeling… uncomfortable?” she could not help asking.
“No, I’m fine,” he said, taking a deep breath.
Lina laughed at herself for overthinking it! “Please ask the driver to stop somewhere and let me down.”
“You can’t get out of the car yet,” said Hadwin Stephenson.
“Why?” Lina frowned.
“Do you think you can avoid all this by getting out of the car and going home? Believe it or not, there are already a bunch of reporters waiting for you in your neighborhood,” said Hadwin Stephenson.
Lina bit her lip. ‘But being with him will only make things more controversial!’
Lina said, “I have no choice even if there are reporters. I still have to go home. You can just give them some excuses. The news will die down after a while.”
After all, Hadwin Stephenson was just a businessman, n However, instead of telling the driver to stop, he said, “If you really wanted to distance yourself from me, you would’ve slapped me when I dragged you into the car. Isn’t it a little late to say these now?”
“You…” Lina glared at him. “I’m already unfortunate enough. What on earth do you want? Aren’t you afraid of your girlfriend misunderstanding you if you do this?”
Hadwin Stephenson stared at Lina with an unfathomable look in his eyes. “Does it matter whether she misunderstands? Will you believe me if I say that I never had feelings for her?”
Lina was stunned. She stared blankly at Hadwin Stephenson.
After some time, she seemed to come to her senses and said, “Are you only dating her for… power and the sake of your career?”
He pressed his thin lips slightly and made no reply.
She did not ask again. She thought that he probably got together with Katherine Jackson because he wanted better prospects for his career. However, they had been together for five years and were going to get married, so he should have some feelings for her.
Why would he marry someone he did not love, right?
At this moment though, he was telling her he had no feelings for Katherine Jackson.
The car drove toward a more and more remote place. Lina was suddenly surprised. “Where are you taking me?”
“We’re going somewhere safe. Something might happen soon, so you’d better stay away,” said Hadwin Stephenson.
“I don’t want to stay away. I want to go home. Hadwin Stephenson, tell the driver to stop!” said Lina.
“The car’s not going to stop. Lina, I just want you safe and sound,” said Hadwin Stephenson.
Lina retorted, “Safe and sound? Is this how you make me safe and sound? By taking me somewhere against my will?”
“Believe me for once!” he said.
She suddenly laughed. “Hadwin Stephenson, have you ever thought that I could’ve been safe and sound if you hadn’t shown up in front of me? If you hadn’t shown up and we hadn’t fallen in love, I wouldn’t have gotten seriously injured and ended up in the ICU. If you hadn’t shown up this time and dragged me to a hotel room, what happened today wouldn’t have happened either.”
Hadwin Stephenson’s face instantly turned ghastly pale. A hint of pain flashed through his eyes. However, it flashed so quickly that Lina did not even see it.
Hadwin Stephenson looked down a little and said in a faint voice, “Even if you don’t like it, you’ll have to stay away for a few days. Everything will come to an end after a few days.”
His words left no room for negotiation, and Lina could not figure out what Hadwin Stephenson was up to.
Was he afraid that she would say something in front of the press and affect his marriage, so he wanted her to ‘stay away’? Was there something else?
It was silent for the rest of the journey. Neither of them spoke.
The destination was an ordinary residential community. Although it was remote and in the suburbs, many people from +Mason Swansonty would buy houses here because they were cheap. Therefore, the place was bustling in the evening.
Hadwin Stephenson brought Lina to an apartment and said to Lina, “Stay here for a few days. You can ask for leave from work. Once things come to an end in a few days, you can leave and lead a normal life!”
“Come to an end?” Lina frowned and asked, “What end? Are you going to find the person who took these photos? Or ask the verified account that caused the incident to go viral online to give a public apology? Hadwin Stephenson, I want to live a normal life, so please leave me alone from now on, okay?”
“Do you want me to leave you alone so badly?” he asked with difficulty. The hands dangling by his sides were clenched into fists.
He was executing his plans early for her and risking it all, but the woman he loved the most was asking him to leave her alone!
She retorted, “Shouldn’t you? Since we had a clean breakup and steered clear of each other for five years, why are you suddenly pestering me? Do you think you can keep me out of the spotlight for a few days and everything will work out all right?”
Hadwin Stephenson kept clenching his hands, and his nails stung his palms.
‘Why… Yeah, why?’
It was because he missed her and longed for her. It was because he had devised a plan for five years. Everything would work out as long as she gave him a little more time.
It was why he could not help seeing her and getting involved with her. He knew his eagerness had almost ruined his plans.
again, but he was fortunately not the man he was five years ago!
“Trust me, I’ll go after everyone who has made a move against you and I won’t let those people continue to berate you. If nothing good comes out of it in a few days, then…” He paused, and a bitter smile appeared on his lips. “I’ll leave you alone from then on.”
It was because that would represent his failure!
Lina only felt a pang in her heart. His smile made her a little uncomfortable and breathless.
“Hadwin Stephenson, what exactly do you want?” She was confused. She could not figure out why he was doing this when they had already broken up.
“I want…” he murmured as he looked at her with longing and desire in his eyes.
