“He didn’t have to,” she scoffed, “I have witnessed the years of torment they put you through, Lia. I have suffered at their hands too.”

Iltbook her hand in mine. “I know. And I am so sorry thatil ham friends with them now. But I promise you, they have changed. Thegywon’t bully us anymore. They saved my life, Christ”.”

Shedrowned. “What do you mean?”

“Blake and were on a date and I was attacked by an animal.l.

Zane and the Ibounds happened to be there too, and they saved d me while Blakaranaway.”

“What?” she whisperred.”Are you okay?”

“Yes, yes, there’s just balight scratch on my arm. Nothing major.”

Understatement of the century.

“Thank God,” she whispered.

The Goddess, actually.

“Anyway, Blake also tried to asssalle today.”

“What? When?”

“In the morning,” I replied. “He tooldamedbehind the school and tried to force me.”

“Why would he do that?” she asked. “Are youodday?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Guess who saved me.”

She frowned. “The Hounds?”

“Yes. Zane and the others.”

“I am so sorry, Lia,” she whispered, pulling me into a hug.

I hugged her back. “It’s okay, it’s not your fault.”

“I wish I could’ve done something,” she said, pulling away.

“You couldn’t have known.”

“How did they know then?”

“It’s their usual hanging out spot,” I replied. “That’s why they came there and saw us.”

“Thank goodness,” she whispered. “Are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine, don’t worry. Just a little shaken up.”

“Why did he do that? What’s wrong with him?” she said, a scowl on her face. “And we thought he’s the hero. Piece of shit.”

I shrugged. “Yeah, we did. Life is unpredictable. He got jealous. because I spent the night at Zane’s after he saved me from the animal attack.”

“So what?” Christy snapped. “He’s gonna assault you? Because he was too much of a coward and ran away?”

“I guess,” I muttered, taking a deep breath. “Anyway. I hope. you get why I’m cool with the Hounds now. Why I’m… close to

Zane.”

She stared at me for a short second, then grinned and scooted. closer to me. “Between you and me, I would’ve understood even if he hadn’t saved your life twice. Have you seen the guy?” she whispered.

I laughed, instinctively glancing at Zane to see his reaction. Just like I’d called it, he smirked. Lucky werewolves and their sharp hearing.

“Fair enough,” I said. “He is hot.”

“And so gorgeous,” she said. “Him and his baby blue eyes. If only he’d smile more.”

“He’s smiling right now.”

She quickly glanced at him, and Zane immediately looked away from us, his eyes wide.

I laughed.

“Lia,” Christy cried, turning away from him. “Can he hear us or something?” she whispered. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

I shook my head, placing my hand on her shoulder. “No, he can’t hear you. He was just staring at me and making funny gestures,” I lied smoothly.

“Are you sure?” She narrowed her eyes.

“Of course,” I chuckled, “he’s all the way over there and we’re all the way here. Do you think he’s a vampire or something?”

“Could be a wolf,” she muttered. “Him and his ‘Hounds”.”

I smirked. “I think I would know if that were the case.”

“Hmm, probably. Now that you’re their best friend.”

“I’m not their best friend,” I replied. “Just yours. I promise.”

“Liar.”

“I swear. It’s a little different with them.”

I hoped she wouldn’t ask me to elaborate.

“If you say so,” she said, thankfully. She then turned her head to glance at Zane, and quickly looked away. “God, he’s still staring. You should go to him.”

“Why?”

“Because I feel like he will burn holes into my back if you don’t. Please go to your new lover boy. After all, the bullies to lovers trope has got to continue.”

I giggled. “There’s no trope.”

“Sure.” She rolled her eyes. “Shoo. I can eat alone. Enjoy your honeymoon period before things get too real.”

I didn’t let it show on my face, but her words hit slightly too deep. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“Bye bye, see you around. If Blake approaches you again, you. should scream, ‘rape!””

“Okay,” I nodded, “I will.”

“I’ll be there to save you.”

“I’m sure.” I gave her a hug, and then made my way back to Zane. “Hey.”

“Look who decided to return,” he said, pulling my chair for me. “Finally.”

I sat down. “You’re acting like I was gone for an hour.”

“I’d tell you what it feels like but you’ll just think I’m flattering you.”

“Maybe. But I like being flattered.”

“Is that so?”

“Mhm.”

“Well then, every second you’re away from me feels like an eternity, love.”

“Now that is flattery. An hour would’ve been more believable.”

Zane glared at me. “You don’t get to decide what I feel, Lia. That is so manipulative of you.”

I gasped. “Is that so?”

“Yes.”

“I could never do that. I’m just telling you what you really feel, not deciding it. They’re your own feelings.”

“Wow,” he frowned, “you’re actually pretty good at gaslighting too.”

I laughed. “Sorry, I’ve read a lot of books about jerks who do this.”

“Makes sense. The lunch break is about to be over soon. You want anything to cat? Or have you simply feasted your eyes on me?”

I raised a brow. “What makes you think that?”
