his voice was low, almost gravelly. He clearly didn’t want to elaborate.

“You didn’t seem inclined to join them,”

I remarked softly, avoiding direct eye contact.

“Yes, they weren’t following their own rules and attempted to steal something from me. So I put an end to their game,”

he replied. I sensed a deeper meaning behind his words. Were they thieves? What had they stolen from him?

“These pills should be taken on an empty stomach,”

I informed him, handing over the medication while avoiding his gaze.

As I reached for the pitcher to pour water into the glass, he spoke up. “Do you think I’m tainted?”

His question halted my movements.

Realizing he had overheard the conversation between Ella and I. When I did not reply, he drew me closer, still seated by the window. “Would you feel dirty if I kissed you?”

The clatter of medicine being dropped on the floor resonated amidst our breaths. My eyes finally locked on his like he wanted, “Would you stop kissing me if I said yes?”

I asked.

“I need to die and be reborn, then maybe I can give it a thought,”

he replied, without breaking his possessive eye contact. I was not surprised by his crazy words.

“When you get what you want then why ask me?”

I challenged him.

“I’m still unsure why you didn’t run away,”

his hand inched closer to my waist, while his unwavering gaze rooted me in place.

I blinked, staring at him in silence. I did not answer Ella earlier but in reality, if Reuben had kissed Ella back, I would have run away from Reuben as if the hounds of hell were chasing me. Even if it would have cost me my life to escape from his cage, I would have run.

The events with Ella and Reuben had left me shattered and bewildered, stirring emotions I shouldn’t have been feeling. It was unsettling, I shouldn’t have been affected this deeply. It affected me more when Reuben’s claim of not liking Ella seemed truthful to me and he wanted me to trust him. In truth, my feelings toward Reuben were now uncertain, it frightened me because… Ceri was no longer within my control.

A sudden surge of heat coursed through my body, as if I were burning. Fearful, I pulled away from Reuben, staring at him with wide eyes. What had just happened?

Reuben furrowed his brow as I withdrew from him, leaving his hand hanging in the air. “You haven’t answered my question,”

he pressed.

His voice sparked something within me, making me unusually sensitive. I struggled to shake off the sensation clouding my mind.

“I… I’m already leaving in three months, so why would I run?”

I replied, taking a step back, fearing that if he came any closer, my body might betray me.

“What did you just say?”

Reuben’s eyes darkened at my words, his demeanor shifting with obsession.

Seeing him approach, I swiftly turned and fled his room, rushing to lock myself in my own. My body felt as if it were aflame. Hurrying to my table, I grabbed two pills and swallowed them in haste.

“There’s no way it is what I think it is…”

Reuben

I knew that I was an obsessive bastard, paranoid, and sometimes psychopathic. Well, most of the time if I was being completely honest. Especially whenever the matter was related to Willow, then my dark side crept out from the depths. That was the real me that I never tried to hide, I was never ashamed of my personality. However, I wanted to believe that this time my dark side was not kicking in and making me believe lies. Neither was I over-thinking nor was I misunderstanding that… Willow was… avoiding me!

I scratched the wall next to the window where I stood watching Willow driving away from the clearing with Wyatt and Lori. For the past three days, she had been dropping children off at kindergarten on her own. When she returned she would immediately go for a morning run, vanishing into the woods until children’s return. After feeding them lunch she would go to Mia’s place with her laptop for hours and only return when it was time for dinner, only to lock herself in her room before I could return from work. I could hardly catch a glimpse of her these days, not once did our eyes lock even if we accidentally bump into each other due to the children. She would just spare a glance in my direction!

I had been watching the same cycle for the past three days. First, I tried to reason with myself that I was being paranoid over nothing. After today I could finally conclude that she had been avoiding me!

I could clearly tell that it all started that night when she suddenly pulled away from me. She looked like she had been provoked by my touch for some reason. I couldn’t help but glance down at my hand. I was sure my greedy hands had not made any bold move to her that night. So why had she looked frightened? I had touched her countless times so why was she behaving like this?

‘Could it be that she did not want to be touched by us?’ Dex growled lowly in my head. “That’s why she is maintaining her distance by avoiding us.”

The corner of my lips twitched bitterly. I had yet to forget her claim to be leaving in three months. That girl… she seemed to be really working hard on her plan to escape from me. If she only knew that it did not matter whether it was three months or thirty years, she was never leaving.

“How long are you going to hold that cigarette? Are you planning to give up smoking?”

Bix’s voice came from behind me. He was seated on one of the chairs in my office, sipping wine as he went through the photos that had just come in.

“Willow said not to smoke until my injuries finished healing,”

I tossed the packet of cigarettes in one of the drawers, ignoring Oran and Bix’s surprised gazes. They were well aware of my addiction to cigarettes. After Willow left me, cigarettes had become the surest way that I could use to calm my mind.

“You know, she lied right?”

Oran asked curiously.

I nodded, “I know, but I will follow it as long as it is what she wants.”

I knew she had been lying back then. No werewolf doctor would stop a wolf from smoking as it would not affect us in the slightest. She simply wanted me to stop smoking.

‘She must be too shy to ask us directly!’ Dex chirped in my mind.

I looked at both of their faces and asked Bix, brushing their expression off, “Is there any news about Shine Moon Pack’s territory? Did you send the samples and other things to the laboratory?”

“I did but it will take some time for the results to come out. They have to go through a lot of tests and comparisons before they give us the results. However…”

Bix’s expression grew seriously, “There is indeed something wrong just like you suspect, Reuben. There were no dead bodies found just like the previous attacks and everything was burned to ash. The strange thing is that even though Shine Moon Pack and Wade Moon Pack share a border, not one attacker entered Wade Moon’s territory. Not even by mistake. They were all wiped out silently under the cover of darkness. What’s more important, I noticed that not even a spark from that fire touched the Wade Moon Pack’s soil,”

he pointed out.

“Hmmm…indeed that is very strange,”

Oran murmured, “first we had been thinking that the attacker was only targeting top ranking powerful packs but by wiping out the Shine Moon Pack which was among the second tier of powerful packs, the attacker’s motive is hard to figure out now. I wonder why only werewolf packs are being targeted.”

“The reason seems simple. There is some fucked up brain behind it. Just like these fuck up photos,”

Bix spoke up dryly, going through the photo of the Blue Heavens Pack from the Alpha meeting. The riverbank was covered with the dead bodies and torn limbs of rogues. Everything was painted in red including the river water where countless wolves’ bodies lay, “it was indeed a great plan to wipe out all the top ranking Alphas. Thankfully no Alpha died in the attack, however if the news of this attack got out then it is going to set off mass hysteria in an already messed up situation.”

“Unfortunately some big mouth assholes could not keep their mouths shut and now even the small packs have the knowledge of this incident,”

Oran sighed. “More terror has been incited in our world. Now the other Alphas are spamming our emails in a panic, requesting Reuben to deal with the rogues, seeing they are also a part of the werewolf community, and can be dealt with by using only Reuben’s command.”
