“Thanks,” I whispered “Don’t mention it.”

Robert looked straight ahead and said, “Those two aren’t worth your time.”

He was right.

I had already wasted too much time on them.

The atmosphere at the next day’s meetings was noticeably different.

Representatives from various countries looked at me with respect and curiosity.

My professional skills had earned more recognition, but my personal life was now under a spotlight.

The morning session went smoothly.

Inside the booth, I was in my element.

During the lunch break, I got an unexpected request.

“Ms.Quinn, would you be willing to grant us an exclusive interview?” A reporter from Cable News Network stood before me, eyes full of expectation.

“An exclusive interview?” “Yes.

The world is very interested in your comments yesterday.”

The reporter said, “We’d like to hear you elaborate.”

I considered it.

“Alright.

But I’ll only discuss professional ethics, not my private life.”

“Sure, we understand.”

The interview was scheduled for after the afternoon session.

As I stepped out of the booth, I found Jared waiting for me in the hallway.

“Kathy, we have to talk.”

“I already told you, there’s nothing to discuss.”

< Chapter 8 Hallway Confrontation "You're going to do an exclusive interview with Cable Network?" He sounded urgent.

“Do you have any idea what that means?” “What does it mean?” “It means our private business will be spread all over the world!” Jared grabbed my arm.

“Kathy, you can’t do this!” I shook him off and said, “Jared, get this straight.

I’m doing the interview because of my professional reputation, not because of you.”

“But what you said yesterday..”

“Those were all facts.”

I said, looking right at him.

“If you’re ashamed, maybe you shouldn’t have done those things in the first place.”

His face darkened.

“Kathy, this is my final warning.

If you talk about those things in the interview, I won’t let you get away with it!” A warning? I laughed.

“Jared, what are you going to do?” I looked at him.

“Use your recordings? Or your pathetic little bit of power?” “You,” 1 cut him off, “Jared, do you really think you can still push me around like you did three years ago?” Just then, Robert showed up, “Ms.Quinn, the interview is ready!” He glanced at Jared, his eyes icy, “Minister Stanley, please don’t interfere with work.”

Jared looked like he wanted to say more, but he stayed silent.

I walked with Robert towards the interview room.

“Did he threaten you?” Robert asked quietly.

“Sort of,” I answered truthfully.

“If he bothers you again, you tell me directly.”

Robert said, his tone serious.

“I’ll make sure he understands the consequences.”

The interview went well.

The questions were professional, focused on interpretation and work ethics.

“Ms.Quinn, about the professional spirit you mentioned yesterday, could you elaborate?” “Professional spirit means adhering to your principles, no matter the circumstances.”

I said, looking into the camera.

“Even when facing great temptation or personal pain, you never betray your duty.”

“And how did you uphold that during the Mayland crisis?” “The situation was indeed complex.”

I chose my words carefully.

“But as an interpreter, my job was to convey information accurately, no matter what that information meant to me personally.”

“Even if it meant hurting those around you?” “Yes.”

I nodded and said, “Professional duty comes before any personal feeling.”

After the interview, the reporter said, “Ms.Quinn, you are the most professional interpreter I’ve ever met.”

“Thank you.”

As I left the interview room, I saw Robert waiting for me outside.

“How did it go?” “It went well, ” I said, feeling a bit tired.

“Robert, do you think I’m doing the right thing?” “Why do you ask?” “Sometimes I wonder am I being too heartless?” Robert stopped walking and turned to face me.

“Kathy, do you know what it means to be heatless?” I shook my head.

“Being heatless is knowing someone is using you, and letting them keep doing it.”

His gaze was steady.

“Being heartless is knowing someone is hurting you, and just taking it.”

“So you mean..

‘” “What you’re doing isn’t being heartless.

It’s called self-preservation.”

Robert looked at me and said, “And it’s overdue self-preservation.”

His words warmed my heart.

For three years, no one had ever understood me like that.

“Thank you, Robert.”

“Don’t thank me.”

He flashed a smile and said, “You just deserve to be treated better.”

That line made my eyes well up.

Back at the hotel that evening, I had just finished showering when I heard an argument outside my door.

Peeking through the peephole, I saw Jared and Bailee, “This is all your idea!” Jared’s voice was furious.

“If you hadn’t cried and begged me to rescue you, would any of this have happened today?” “Jared, I..

I never thought it would turn out this way..”

Baílee’s voice was tearful.

“You never thought?” Jared sneered.

“You never thought Kathy would record it? You never thought she’d speak out publicly?” “I really didn’t think..”

“Bailee, do you know, because of you, I’ve become the laughing stock of the world!” Hearing this, I opened the door.

Both of them looked at me, their faces filled with panic.

“What’s all the yelling about?” I leaned against the doorframe.

*This is a hotel, not your living room.”

“Kathy.”

Jared started to explain.

“Save it,” I cut him off, “I heard everything,” Bailee’s face went pale.

“Kathy, what did you hear?” “I heard the truth.”

I said, looking at her.

“So even you know it was your crying < Chapter 9 The Interview and the Threat that got him into this mess."

“I..”

“You, what?” I stepped out of the room.

“Bailee, aren’t you tired of playing the innocent victim for three years?” “Kathy, I wasn’t playing..”

“Weren”t you?” I laughed and said, “Then tell me, why did you call Jared during the Mayland crisis?” Bailee’s eyes darted away.

“I..I was really scared..”

“Scared?” I moved closer to her.

“Bailee, did you have any idea how dangerous the situation was? Do you know your one phone call almost got people killed?” “I..
