“Yana, why didn’t you post a video today? I was really looking forward to it.”

She wasn’t sure if she would get a response, but to her surprise, Lilyana replied not long after.

“I’ve been pretty busy with studying lately, so the videos might be on hold for a while.”

Right after that, Isabella noticed Lilyana had gone offline.

That reply didn’t sit right with Isabella. There hadn’t been any major exams or competitions recently, and Lilyana had already skipped a grade ahead. She had long mastered the middle school curriculum—so what kind of academic pressure could be weighing on her now?

Isabella’s concern lingered. After some thought, she poured a glass of warm milk and walked over to Lilyana’s bedroom, knocking softly on the door.

Lilyana answered almost immediately. Upon seeing her mother, she blinked in surprise. “Mom? Why aren’t you asleep yet?”

Isabella offered a small smile. “I saw your light was still on, so I thought I’d check on you.”

“Come in.”

As Isabella entered and took a seat, her eyes instinctively drifted toward the open book on Lilyana’s desk.

But it wasn’t some advanced academic material—it was a comic book, full of vibrant, passionate illustrations.

Lilyana stiffened for a moment before flashing a sheepish smile. “I was just about to go to bed after finishing this chapter.”

“Okay.” Isabella chuckled knowingly. “It’s normal to take a break from studying and unwind with a book. I understand. Tomorrow’s Friday. After school, you and your brother don’t need to rush home. Tell the driver to take you somewhere nice to have a little fun.”

Lilyana’s face brightened. “Thanks, Mom.” She leaned in and hugged Isabella, her voice soft with gratitude.

They chatted for a while longer, and once Lilyana finished her milk, Isabella waved her goodnight before leaving the room.

Alone in her room, Lilyana found herself appreciating her mother’s warmth tonight. But her thoughts kept circling back to the new transfer student—Calan Archer. He had only arrived today, yet he already seemed to outshine her. His grades were outstanding, his looks even more so, and his presence in the class had been nothing short of captivating.

Lilyana clenched her jaw slightly. She had worked hard to earn her reputation as the school’s top student, but now, out of nowhere, someone else was stealing her spotlight.

Lilyana, who had always worn the title of “number one” with ease, was now experiencing something unfamiliar—a spark of competition flickering to life for the very first time.

She glanced down at the pages of her comic book.

The protagonist—her favorite character—stood tall, unwavering, always at the center of attention. No matter the odds, she never faded into the background.

Lilyana ran her fingers over the printed image, determination building in her heart.

“I’ve made up my mind! This year, I’m going to focus even more on sharpening my skills. I won’t let Calan steal my spotlight again!” With newfound resolve, she set the comic book aside, washed up, and went to bed.

The next morning, Lilyana walked into class with sharp focus, her mind set. She listened attentively, engaged in every discussion, and tackled every question with precision.

After class, Lilyana made sure to shine, handling activities with poise and chatting effortlessly with the student council members. Everyone around her enjoyed her company.

Meanwhile, the transfer student, Calan, remained at his desk, dressed sharply in his custom-fitted school uniform, writing with deliberate focus. He kept to himself, even after class.

Yet, despite his aloof demeanor, students passing by couldn’t help but be drawn to him. Their gazes lingered, a mix of admiration and curiosity flickering in their eyes.

Lilyana couldn’t wrap her head around it. How could someone like Calan exist—someone who mastered the art of crafting an image even better than she did? It was almost infuriating!

“Lilyana, didn’t you say you were going to the library to return a book? Let’s go together.”

Snapping out of her thoughts, Lilyana quickly composed herself and responded with a polite smile. “Sure, let’s go.”

The two of them rose from their seats, books in hand, ready to leave. Just as Lilyana passed by Calan’s desk, a pen suddenly tumbled to the floor.

Without thinking, she bent down to pick it up—only to realize another hand had reached for it at the same time. That hand hesitated, withdrawing slightly when its owner saw that she had already grabbed the pen.

Lilyana straightened up and handed the pen over.

Calan took it, his voice calm and measured as he said, “Thank you.” Two words. Simple, steady, yet oddly captivating.

Lilyana felt an inexplicable sensation stir within her. Had she really just helped her only rival?

She quickly shook it off, offering a casual wave. “No problem.” With that, she followed her classmate out of the classroom, heading toward the library.

Lilyana figured that would be her only interaction with Calan—at least until exam results came out and they could finally see who reigned supreme.

But the next day, her younger brother, Collier, came running toward her, beaming with excitement.

“Lilyana, I made a new friend! He helped me out, and I helped him too!” Collier excitedly rambled, his voice filled with enthusiasm. Then, as though sharing the most important news, he added, “He’s been looking for a place to stay, and I remembered the villa next to ours is empty—so I recommended it! He’s moving in this weekend, and I’ll introduce him to you!”

Lilyana knew her brother well—he was always eager to make new friends. But for him to go as far as recommending the house next door and personally ensuring an introduction? That meant he truly admired this person. Her curiosity was piqued.

“Alright, Collier. If he’s your friend, then he’s my friend too. I’ll even prepare a welcome gift for him.”

“Awesome! You’ll like him; I know it!” Collier grinned, his excitement contagious. He immediately shared the news with their mother, Isabella.

Seeing how serious her son was, Isabella took an interest as well. She told Collier to invite his friend over for dinner once he’d settled in. The weekend arrived, and early in the morning, a car pulled up in front of the vacant villa next door.

The moment Collier heard his friend had arrived, he bolted straight to the dance studio, where Lilyana had just finished her stretching routine.

“Lilyana, my new friend—our new neighbor—he’s here!” Collier’s voice was full of energy.

Lilyana straightened up, looking at her eager brother. “Got it. Let me change, and we’ll go welcome him together.”

For this first meeting, Lilyana took extra care with her appearance. After a quick shower, she slipped into a white dress and neatly pinned back her hair with delicate clips. One last check in the mirror—perfect. Flashing a composed yet warm smile, she picked up the carefully wrapped gift and followed Collier out.

They rang the doorbell and waited. A few moments later, the door opened, revealing a boy dressed in a crisp white shirt and light-colored jeans.

He had striking features and a naturally refined air about him. A faint smile played on his lips—until his gaze landed on Lilyana.

His smile faltered ever so slightly.

Lilyana, too, found herself momentarily stunned.

Before meeting her brother’s new friend, Lilyana had imagined countless versions of his personality and appearance, running through various possibilities in her mind. But never in a million years did she expect it to be Calan—her own classmate.

How had this reserved, seemingly untouchable academic prodigy ended up befriending her elementary school-aged brother? Her mind buzzed with unanswered questions.

Oblivious to the tension between his sister and his friend, Collier beamed with pride as he introduced them.

“Lilyana, this is my friend, Calan! And Calan, this is my amazing big sister. What do you think? Isn’t she the prettiest girl in all of Ansport?”

Collier could never stop praising his sister. No matter who he was talking to, he always found a way to highlight her talents and charm. “Calan, my sister isn’t just stunning—she’s incredibly talented too. Everyone adores her,” he said with enthusiasm.

Normally, Lilyana wouldn’t be bothered by his words. If it were anyone else, she would have simply nodded along, knowing her brother was just stating facts. But with Calan here, the situation felt different. An odd sense of unease settled over her as Collier continued.

She reached out and tugged at his collar, lowering her voice. “Alright, Collier, that’s enough.” Then, turning to Calan, she smiled politely. “I had no idea you and my brother were friends. What a small world, right?”

With that, she handed Calan the neatly wrapped gift, her expression composed. “A little something as a welcome gift,” she said warmly. “Since we’re neighbors now, I hope we get along well.”

Calan glanced at the gift in her hands. “Thank you, Lilyana. I didn’t expect this.” He looked up at her with a warm smile. “And I definitely didn’t expect you to be Collier’s sister.”

“I’ve heard so much about you from Collier,” Calan continued. “He never stops talking about how talented and wonderful his sister is. Now that I’ve met you, I understand why.”

Lilyana blinked, momentarily caught off guard. “Oh?”

She turned toward Collier, silently questioning just how much he had shared about her.

Calan’s gaze remained steady. “He’s right, you know. You really are remarkable.” His eyes flickered with amusement as he noticed the faint blush dusting Lilyana’s cheeks. “No need to be embarrassed,” he added gently.

Collier, who had been listening all along, finally realized his sister and Calan were classmates. But what surprised him even more was the way Calan’s words had affected Lilyana.

His sister rarely blushed. Yet now, her face was noticeably red—more than it ever was after her dance performances.

Collier narrowed his eyes at Calan, then at Lilyana, sensing something unusual between them. But being too young to piece it together, he simply scratched his head and shrugged it off.

“Anyway!” Collier suddenly chimed in, eager to change the subject. “Calan, since you just moved in, why don’t we take a look around?”

Calan chuckled but nodded. “Sure, come in.”

Lilyana and Collier followed him inside. Though the villa stood right next to theirs, the interior was strikingly different—more spacious, with elegant furnishings that hinted at quiet luxury.

After showing them around, Calan led them to the living room, where they settled onto the plush sofa.

Having served them drinks and snacks, Calan suddenly stood. “Give me a second,” he said before disappearing into another room.

When he returned, he held two small packages in his hands. Collier’s eyes lit up. “Are those for us?” he asked eagerly, leaning forward.

Calan handed the small packages to him and Lilyana with a gentle smile. “Yes, these are for you. I hope you like them.”

Lilyana accepted hers, glancing at the neatly wrapped gift. “Thank you,” she said, her voice softer. It struck her that she had probably spoken more to Calan today than in all their previous encounters combined.

The three of them sat on the sofa, falling into an easy conversation.

As they talked, Lilyana found herself reevaluating Calan. At school, he had always seemed distant—someone who kept to himself and never bothered with small talk. But here, he was different. Warmer. More approachable.

Was this the real him? Or was the Calan she knew at school the one who truly existed?

She wasn’t sure yet. But as she pondered, her mother’s words from earlier surfaced in her mind.

A quick glance at the clock told her it was almost noon.

“Since today’s your first day in the neighborhood, why don’t you join us for lunch?” she offered.

Collier grinned. “You have to try our chef’s cooking! I promise, after one meal, you’ll never want to eat anywhere else!”

Faced with their warm invitation, Calan hesitated for only a moment before nodding. “That sounds great. I’d love to.”

As they stepped into Lilyana and Collier’s home, Calan came to an abrupt stop. His gaze drifted over the space—the soft lighting, the inviting warmth that lingered in the air.

Lilyana noticed his pause and raised an eyebrow. “Something wrong?”

Calan let out a quiet chuckle, shaking his head. “No. I’m just… envious.”

She tilted her head. “Envious?”

A shadow passed through Calan’s eyes, but his voice remained steady. “My parents work abroad. They’re always busy, and when they do take time off, they usually spend it together without me. I never really liked living overseas, and over time, I guess I became more withdrawn. The doctor suggested I try a change of environment, so I decided to come back here for school.”

Calan took in the decor of Lilyana’s home, so different from his own, and let out a thoughtful remark. “I never really understood what the doctor meant by embracing a new environment and lifestyle, but now I think I get it. Collier, Lilyana, thank you both.”

Lilyana realized that Calan—the same aloof presence in her classroom—wasn’t deliberately trying to stand out; rather, he simply didn’t know how to blend in.

Classmates often whispered that Calan had impossibly high standards, and Lilyana agreed. But now, she realized he hadn’t chosen solitude—he had grown up with it, molded by it, to the point that even when surrounded by others, he naturally set himself apart.

A newfound curiosity sparked within her.

“If that’s the case, does that mean Collier is your first friend?” she asked.

“Yes.” Calan nodded, unbothered by the admission.

At that moment, Lilyana’s gaze softened, her feelings toward him shifting. She never would have guessed that someone as dazzling and accomplished as Calan carried such a lonely past. Just like that, the idea of seeing him as a rival faded from her mind.

“Calan, since you’re friends with Collier, that makes you my friend too,” she said with certainty. “If you ever need anything, Collier and I will be here. I’m sure things will only get better for you.”

“Thank you, Lilyana.” There was a warmth to his voice now, and when he said her name, it sounded different—softer, more familiar. “For the first time, I feel like coming back to Lorpond, my homeland, was the right decision.”

The three of them exchanged glances before bursting into laughter. Just then, Collier sniffed the air and lit up with excitement. “It smells amazing! I wonder what the chef made. Let’s go check it out!”

After the meal, Isabella found herself growing fond of Calan. Hearing about his upbringing stirred a protective feeling in her. Noting that he and Lilyana were classmates, she made a casual suggestion.

“Calan, you’re so young, yet you’re living alone while managing school every day… Why don’t I have the driver take you and Lilyana together? The destination is the same, after all.”

“That’s a great idea!” Collier immediately perked up, raising his hand in agreement.

Calan hesitated, instinctively glancing at Lilyana, unsure whether to accept.

She met his gaze and answered without hesitation, “I think it’s a good idea too. I don’t mind. Calan, do you?”

“No, I don’t mind.” His response came swiftly, his eyes steady on hers. Isabella smiled at the exchange. “Then it’s settled. Starting tomorrow, the driver will take both of you.”
