However, while Nana had envisioned a warm and lively introduction, reality had other plans.

When she and Sunny reached El’s crib, their hands full of carefully chosen gifts, they found the tiny baby peacefully asleep, his eyes shut tight. Nana called out, “El,” a few times, but when he didn’t stir, she hesitated, unsure of what to do next.

Frowning, she tugged on Isabella’s sleeve, her face scrunched up in concern. “Mom, the baby is so tiny… Why won’t he play with me and Sunny? Why is he still sleeping?”

Evie, who had always adored Nana, let out a soft laugh and answered before Isabella could.

Evie smiled and said, “El is really happy to see you, Nana, but he’s still too young to play with you. It’ll take some time before he can join you. And don’t forget, you were just like him when you were little. You were in your crib too, the first time I saw you.”

Nana blinked in surprise and turned to Evie. “Huh? I was like this too?”

She glanced back at baby El, bundled up in soft blankets, then looked down at her own hands and feet as if trying to process an earth-shattering discovery.

Nana gasped dramatically, covering her mouth with both hands. “No way! But… but I don’t remember that at all!” Her little face turned pink at the thought.

She quickly turned to Sunny, leaning in as if sharing a secret. “Sunny, you’re older than me. Do you remember what I was like when I was a baby?”

Sunny, who was just a year older, furrowed his brows and shook his head. “Nope. I don’t remember.”

Nana let out a deep sigh of relief. “That’s good!” She nodded to herself, satisfied.

Evie and Isabella watched the interaction, utterly amused. Nana’s curiosity and expressions were so adorable that their hearts melted.

Unaware that the adults were amused by her thoughts, Nana lifted her chin with newfound confidence. Turning to Isabella and Evie, she declared, “It’s okay if El can’t play with us yet. We’ll just stand here and play with him!”

Evie chuckled and ruffled Nana’s hair. “What a thoughtful big sister you are. El is lucky to have you around.”

With the nanny keeping a watchful eye and tending to every little movement El made, Evie felt at ease letting Nana and Sunny stand by the crib and play with the baby.

By the time evening rolled around and dinner was over, Isabella and Andrew were ready to leave. They walked over to the crib, finding Nana still there, completely absorbed in watching her little cousin. Isabella crouched down beside her. “Sweetheart, you’ve been playing with baby El all day. It’s time to go home.”

Nana didn’t answer right away. She glanced at her mother, then back at her tiny cousin.

El lay in the crib, waving his tiny hands in the air and babbling softly. He wasn’t crying or fussing, just happily kicking his little feet.

This was Nana’s first time being an older cousin, and she found him absolutely adorable. She loved watching him and was endlessly curious about everything he did. The thought of leaving now made her heart sink.

She pouted slightly and looked up at Isabella. “Mommy, how did the time go by so fast? Can we stay just a little longer?”

Isabella sighed, shaking her head gently. “I know you’re having fun, sweetheart, but it’s getting late. We’ll come back another day, I promise. But for now, we really have to go.”

Nana’s shoulders slumped in disappointment, but just as quickly, a new idea sparked in her mind.

Her eyes brightened, and she turned to the nanny standing beside the crib. Taking her hand, she gave it a little shake. “Kind lady, can you hold my cousin and come home with me?”

Evie burst out laughing, amused by Nana’s innocent logic. “Oh, Nana, do you want to take your cousin home?”

Children’s innocent logic never failed to surprise adults. Nana had simply assumed that since the nanny could carry El, she must also have the power to take him wherever she wanted—including home with her.

Nana looked up at Evie with hopeful eyes. “Aunt Evie, can I take him home?”

Evie met Nana’s eager expression and sighed softly. She wished she could grant her request, but El was still so tiny—too fragile to be taken anywhere just yet.

With a gentle smile, Evie said, “Nana, your cousin will go home with you someday, but not today.”

Nana frowned slightly. “Why not today?”

Seeing her daughter’s growing curiosity, Isabella pulled her close and gently stroked her hair. “Sweetheart, your cousin is still very little. He needs to stay at home with Aunt Evie until he grows bigger and stronger. When you were a baby, you always stayed with me too, remember?”

Nana blinked, thinking hard. After a moment, she slowly nodded. Isabella’s explanation made sense, but she still felt a little disappointed. She had been so excited about bringing her tiny cousin home.

Still, she didn’t argue. Instead, she obediently climbed into the car with her parents.

Unlike her usual chatty self, Nana grew unusually quiet. She clutched her toy in her lap, gazing out the window thoughtfully. Every now and then, she stole glances at Isabella and Andrew, her little mind clearly working through something.

When they arrived home, Nana murmured a quiet “Goodnight” and headed straight to her room. Isabella and Andrew exchanged a glance. They could tell something was on her mind. They couldn’t help but wonder what their little girl was thinking.

After working in the study for a while, Isabella and Andrew had just retired to their room when a tentative knock interrupted their evening. The nanny, her face etched with concern, stood at their doorway, wringing her hands.

Isabella pulled the door wide, her brow furrowing. “What’s wrong?”

“Madam, I’m terribly sorry to disturb you,” the nanny apologized, her voice tinged with helplessness. “But might you check on Nana? She’s refusing to sleep, despite my best efforts.”

“Refusing to sleep?” Isabella echoed, bewilderment washing over her features. Her daughter had always been the picture of compliance, never once resisting bedtime’s gentle call until now.

“Could she be feeling unwell?” Andrew, catching the exchange between his wife and the nanny, appeared at Isabella’s shoulder.

The nanny shook her head. “No, Nana is perfectly healthy.”

How peculiar. Isabella and Andrew exchanged meaningful glances, silently agreeing to investigate the matter together.

The trio made their way down the hallway to Nana’s enchanting princess-themed sanctuary.

As the door swung open, Isabella’s gaze fell upon her daughter—a vision of innocence in her blue starfish pajamas. Nana sat cross-legged on the plush carpet, clutching her treasured long-eared rabbit toy to her chest. Her eyelids drooped with exhaustion as her small head bobbed in a losing battle against sleep.

“She’s clearly fighting to stay awake,” the nanny explained, gesturing toward the child. “But whenever I suggest bedtime, she adamantly refuses.”

So desperately tired, yet stubbornly resistant to sleep’s embrace—what hidden troubles plagued their little Nana?

Perplexed, Isabella glided to her daughter’s side and said to her with the tenderness only a mother could summon, “Nana, sweetheart, Mommy and Daddy have come to see you.”

At the sound of Isabella’s melodic voice, Nana’s head snapped up, drowsiness momentarily banished from her widening eyes.

“Mommy, Daddy!”

Pure adoration and relief radiated from Nana’s expression. In one swift motion, she abandoned her beloved rabbit and launched herself into Isabella’s waiting arms.

Andrew stood nearby, studying his daughter carefully. Finding no obvious signs of distress, he opted for the direct approach. “Nana, the nanny says you don’t want to go to sleep. Can you share with Mommy and Daddy what’s keeping you awake?”

Isabella gazed lovingly at her daughter. “Sweetheart, you must tell us if something’s troubling you, or we’ll be sick with worry.”

Hearing their gentle prodding, Nana squirmed slightly in Isabella’s embrace before confessing in her delicate voice, “Because I’m waiting for Mommy and Daddy to finish work.”

Though merely three years old, Nana had already grasped the demanding nature of her parents’ careers. Not long ago, she had awakened from a lengthy slumber only to find them still deeply immersed in their professional duties.

Isabella and Andrew exchanged puzzled glances, momentarily setting aside all other concerns.

“But why do you feel you must wait for us to complete our work?” Andrew asked softly.

Nana’s expression transformed into one of solemn importance.

“Because I have something very, very important that I need to tell Mommy and Daddy at the same time.”

With these words, understanding finally dawned on Isabella—the mystery of her daughter’s bedtime rebellion solved.

She turned to the nanny with a grateful smile. “Thank you for your dedication tonight. Please, go and rest. We’ll handle getting Nana to sleep.”

“Okay, madam.”

The nanny quietly closed the door behind her. Isabella and Andrew settled on the carpet, facing their daughter.

“Nana,” Isabella asked gently, “now that Mommy and Daddy are here, can you tell us what this important thing is?”

Nana tilted her head, studying her parents’ serious expressions with satisfaction. “I can tell you.”

Isabella and Andrew listened intently, not expecting their daughter’s first words to freeze them in place.

“Mommy, Daddy,” Nana announced, “I want you to make an effort and give me a little brother.”
