Isabella blinked. “Wait… what?”

For a brief second, instinct took over, and she pulled Nana closer to her chest, as if shielding her from the absurdity of it all. Then, realizing her reaction, she let out a small sigh, feeling amused.

“She’s barely a month old, Andrew,” she said with a light chuckle. “We’ll deal with the future when it comes.”

She hadn’t thought much about their daughter’s future. All she wanted was to savor each moment, ensuring Nana grew up safe, happy, and loved.

Now, Isabella couldn’t help but picture the idea of arranging a marriage for Nana. The thought flickered in her mind for a moment before she quickly pushed it away.

Nana’s life was her own. As parents, she and Andrew could shield her, nurture her, and guide her along the way, but they had no right to dictate her future.

If fate had someone in store for their daughter, then destiny would weave its own course. Forcing an “arranged marriage” on two children would only confine their futures and strip them of their choices.

Isabella voiced her thoughts to Andrew, and he agreed without hesitation.

After all, their own love had bloomed naturally, a bond formed through attraction and circumstance—not because of the long-standing agreement between the Klein and Patton families.

If anything, that old engagement had been nothing but a thorn in Andrew’s side before Isabella had even returned to the Patton family.

As a father, he had no intention of controlling his daughter’s future. He would set boundaries to keep her safe, but beyond that, she was free to carve her own path.

With their views perfectly aligned, they turned their attention back to the joyous occasion at hand. Isabella carried Nana in her arms, completing the festivities for their daughter’s one-month celebration. After the event, Isabella found herself with more time to spend with Nana, savoring every precious moment.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Nana went from lying still to rolling over, from crawling to wobbling on tiny feet before finally walking upright.

Even though Andrew’s workload remained just as demanding, he made it a priority to be there—sharing in their everyday moments, watching their daughter grow, filling their home with warmth and laughter.

As the years passed, Isabella realized that Elaine’s words had been true—Nana was a thoughtful child.

From the very beginning, she had never been a difficult child, never a source of worry for Isabella or the nannies who helped care for her. Whenever Isabella worked from home, Nana would play quietly nearby.

Her wide, intelligent eyes sparkled with mischief, as if she might get up to something at any second, but she never caused trouble. Somehow, without ever being told, she just knew not to disturb her mother’s work. And when the laptop…

Finally, when the laptop was closed, Nana would eagerly scoop up her toys and bring them over, ready to share her world with Isabella—so attentive, so thoughtful.

It amazed Isabella. Even though Nana was still too young to speak in full sentences, there was already a depth to her that many older children lacked.

Motherhood had changed Isabella in ways she never expected. She had never been one to dwell on things too deeply before, but after having Nana, she found herself noticing details she once would have overlooked.

Phrases like “early success can lead to burnout” and “too much intelligence can be a burden” began to gnaw at her.

Her worries reached their peak one afternoon when two-and-a-half-year-old Nana toddled into the room, clutching a stack of medical notes from Isabella’s study, and asked Isabella to read them for her.

That was when Isabella made up her mind—her daughter needed to experience the simple joys of childhood. Determined to let Nana be a child for as long as possible, she started taking her out more, making sure she had plenty of time to play with kids her own age.

Patton Manor quickly became one of their favorite spots, where Nana often played with Sunny, Susan’s son. The change was immediate. With a playmate by her side, Nana grew more cheerful, more playful, more like the little girl she was meant to be.

As the children laughed and played, Isabella and Susan would sit nearby, chatting about everything from motherhood to their latest interests, exchanging tips and tricks on raising little ones.

Meanwhile, Milly and Howard, along with Evie and Waylon, had also settled into their own marriages. They hadn’t had children yet, but life had a way of unfolding in its own time.

One quiet afternoon, Isabella was at the piano, cradling Nana in her lap as she played a soft, heartfelt melody. Just as she finished, her phone rang.

It was Evie. The excitement in her voice was unmistakable.

“Isabella! I just got back from a check-up—I’m pregnant! I’m going to be a mom, just like you!”

Isabella’s heart swelled with happiness. She knew how much this meant to Evie. Losing her parents at a young age had left a void in her life, and no amount of love from her family had ever truly filled it. Now, she could finally build her own warm, loving family.

“Evie, that’s wonderful news!”

Having been through it all herself, Isabella wasted no time offering Evie a few words of advice—things to watch out for, things to be mindful of. She even recommended the professional team Andrew had arranged for her during her own pregnancy.

As she hung up the phone, three-year-old Nana looked up at her with wide, curious eyes. With an innocent smile, she asked in her soft, sweet voice, “Mommy, is Auntie Evie going to have a baby?”

Isabella pressed a gentle kiss to her daughter’s chubby cheek. “That’s right, sweetheart. Did you hear Mommy’s conversation? You’re going to have another cousin to play with soon! Are you happy?”

“Yes!”

Nana nodded eagerly, her eyes brimming with curiosity as she clutched Isabella’s hand. “Mommy, when are we going to see my little cousin? I want to give them my toys.”

Isabella knew she couldn’t explain things to Nana in the way adults understood them.

She needed to put them in terms her daughter could grasp. After a brief pause, she gently took Nana’s hand and pointed out the window. “Sweetheart, do you see that big tree over there?”

Nana followed her mother’s finger, her gaze landing on the bare branches stretching toward the sky. “When this tree grows leaves and then becomes bare again, that’s when you’ll get to meet your little cousin.”

Nana tilted her head, deep in thought, her big eyes fixed on the tree. There was a large bird’s nest perched on one of the branches, and she suddenly found herself wondering if any little birds lived inside. Scratching her head, she recalled scenes from television that vaguely resembled this moment, her expression growing pensive.

That day, in addition to sticking close to Isabella in the office, listening to her mother’s work stories, and watching her go about her daily tasks, Nana took on a new mission of her own. With a small, grass-green watering can in hand, she went outside and carefully watered the very tree her mother had pointed to.

As she sprinkled water over the roots, she mumbled to herself, “Drink lots of water, grow up fast, and bring me a little cousin…”

When Andrew returned home from work, he was met with the peculiar sight of his daughter crouched beside the tree, diligently watering it with unwavering determination. Puzzled, he walked over and crouched beside her.

“Sweetheart, why are you suddenly watering the tree?”

“Daddy, I’m waiting for my little cousin.”

Nana carefully explained her reasoning to Andrew, her tone serious and determined. However, since Andrew wasn’t aware of the whole situation, her words left him slightly puzzled.

But rather than question it, he chuckled, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp suit.

“Well then,” he said. “Daddy will help you.”

He set aside the documents he had been holding, and just like that, he joined Nana in watering the tree.

Inside the house, Isabella overheard their voices and stepped out onto the porch. At the sight of Andrew and Nana working together beneath the tree, she couldn’t help but smile. The moment was too precious to let slip away. She reached for her phone and, with a quiet click, captured the scene.

As the seasons shifted and autumn arrived, joyous news spread through Patton Manor. Evie had safely given birth to a baby boy—Elmore Patton, affectionately nicknamed El.

On the day of their visit, Isabella and Andrew took Nana to meet her new cousin.

Even before they left the house, Nana was brimming with excitement. She understood that today was all about meeting her baby cousin. She had prepared accordingly, carefully selecting a few of her most treasured toys to bring along.

Isabella, watching her daughter’s enthusiasm, knew that El was still far too young to play. But she didn’t want to dampen Nana’s spirits, so she let her bring the toys along without interference.

Upon arriving at the Patton Manor, Isabella and Andrew first congratulated Waylon and Evie before making their way to see the newborn, who was peacefully sleeping.

Nana, however, had other plans. The moment she set foot inside the manor, her first thought was of her usual playmate, Sunny.

Spotting him, she rushed over and grabbed his hand, looking up at him with wide, eager eyes. “Sunny, have you seen El yet?” she asked, her tone filled with mystery.

Sunny, who lived at the manor, had of course seen El. He gave a simple nod. “Yeah, I’ve seen him.”

Nana’s little brows furrowed at his answer. “You already saw him?” she huffed, clearly displeased. But she recovered quickly, her curiosity taking over once more. “Did you give him any toys?”

This time, Sunny shook his head.

Nana’s confidence instantly returned. Puffing out her chest, she declared, “My mommy says El is my cousin, and that means he’s your cousin too! Since he’s our little cousin, we have to give him our favorite toys. That way, he’ll be happy and want to play with us in the future!”

Sunny thought about her words. He couldn’t really argue with her logic, so he simply nodded.

Beaming with pride, Nana held up the toys she had brought and nudged him. “Then go get your best toys, too! Let’s go see our cousin together.”

“Okay.”

Sunny hurried off to gather his own treasured playthings, and then, the two children made their way towards the nursery.
