Maybe there was something to the whole fucking another shifter to stave off heat thing, after all. Certainly worth a shot.

He pulled out to collapse next to me, and I was still recovering from the orgasm when he draped an arm around me and pulled me against his chest. Honestly, there had been part of me convinced he was just going to throw us both out as soon as this was over–even if I still hadn’t figured out exactly whatthiswas–but Cole was full of surprises.

Some better than others.”Fuck,” Marcus breathed, watching us with eyes still glazed in bliss. “You two are hot to watch.””Mhmm,” I murmured, reaching for his arm to pull him closer. Sandwiched between the two of them, hot and firm and powerful, I felt damn near invincible.”So, how’re you feeling?” Cole asked, a hint of smugness in his tone even though his voice was thick and husky with sex. He stroked my bare side, his fingertips grazing my sensitive flesh just lightly enough to make me shiver.”I think it’s safe to say heat has been successfully averted,” I mumbled, looking back at him over my shoulder. “For now, anyway.”

His lips quirked at one corner. “Told you.”

I rolled my eyes, until I remembered something. “Was the bite part of the plan?”

The way his expression went blank made it clear it wasn’t. He looked away and snorted. “I improvised a little.”

Huh. So Mr. Sex God himself had lost control, too. Even if it was only for a second. I should’ve taken the opportunity to gloat, and I wasn’t precluding that option in the future, but for the moment, I just settled between them, basking in the afterglow. No sense in ruining the moment, even if it was a one-time thing.

Though if I was being entirely honest, there was part of me hoping it wouldn’t be.

Of all the shit I had done in the last few months, a threesome with my boss and my trainer was definitely the one I least saw coming. And yet, even though I was having a hard time walking right the day after, I couldn’t bring myself to regret it. Not in the least.

Trying to keep a straight face around Sam the following night was another matter.

My phone buzzed in my pocket while I was in the middle of a shift, and I didn’t recognize the number, so I silenced it. Liam didn’t know my new number, but that didn’t stop the other solicitors.

I checked my phone again when I had a few minutes alone in the back and saw the same number had called half a dozen more times.

Damn, the fake car insurance people were getting pushy. The next time it rang, I answered. “Listen, dude, I don’t even have a car, so unless you wanted to insure my sneakers, you need to fuck off.””Sorry, I’m really not in the business of insurance,” a familiar voice answered. “But I would like to have a chat about security.”

My spine went rigid.

Alexander.

Shit. In all the bullshit, I had completely forgotten I should probably reach out to him and give him a warning that a bunch of asshole vampires were trying to get him through his acquaintances.

No, that wasn’t entirely true. I hadn’t forgotten so much as I had put it out of my mind. After all, there was a good chance he already knew, which meant he knew about my wolf form, and I really wasn’t sure how many other people I wanted to bring into this. Especially one I didn’t know I could trust, no matter what my primitive brain wanted to think.”Alexander. Hey,” I began, cringing at how stiff I sounded. “I’ve been meaning to call you.””Oh?” There was something in his casual tone that made it clear he knew more than he was letting on.

I sighed. “What have you heard?””That’s quite a vague question,” he remarked. “I’ve heard a lot of things. Unless you mean what I’ve heard as it pertains to you the other night.”

I smothered a groan and ran a hand through my bangs. “So you heard about your friends who came to see me at work.””I wouldn’t put it quite like that, but yes,” he answered in a noncommittal tone. “Are you alright?””All right is a relative term these days, but yeah. I’m okay. Look, I’m at work right now, so maybe we could do this later? We definitely need to talk.””Can you take a lunch?” he asked.

I hesitated. Part of me wanted to put it off indefinitely, mostly because I wasn’t sure what had happened let alone how to navigate it, but I knew it wasn’t going to get any easier to talk about. That, and Marcus had insisted on coming to pick me up after work to take me back to his place for the next couple of nights, at least. Considering I didn’t know when those vamps were going to be back, and I definitely didn’t want to bring any trouble to Sam or the regular patrons at the bar, I had agreed.
