“What is it?”
Andrew watched Isabella closely, thinking she might not have liked the taste of the bread.
But that wasn’t the issue at all.
Her current symptoms felt eerily similar to… pregnancy symptoms.
Isabella had always been in good health, and her cycles were never a problem, so she hadn’t even noticed. But now that she thought about it, wasn’t she nearly a week late?
She swallowed the bite in her mouth, suddenly losing her appetite for the rest.
Looking up at Andrew, she hesitated for a moment before asking, “Honey, do you have time this morning? Can you come with me to the hospital later?”
Andrew’s expression shifted instantly, worry flashing across his face. “Are you feeling sick? We should go right now!”
He pushed his plate aside, ready to rush her out the door, but Isabella quickly reached for his hand to stop him.
“Wait, it’s not that,” she reassured him. “I just… my period is late. I think I might be pregnant.”
The word “pregnant” seemed to momentarily freeze Andrew in place. His body tensed, his voice dropping to a breathless whisper. “Pregnant?”
Isabella said, “Doctors shouldn’t diagnose themselves. I can’t say for sure yet—I still need to wait for the test results.”
“Then let’s go right after breakfast.”
Andrew was extremely serious. He wasted no time, calling ahead to the hospital before they even left, ensuring they’d be seen right away. By the time they arrived, the best doctor was already waiting. The results came in faster than expected, and as soon as they were ready, Andrew took Isabella straight to the doctor’s office.
The doctor looked at the report and confirmed, “Ms. Patton is about five weeks pregnant. Make sure to get plenty of rest… and during the first trimester, try to avoid any strenuous activity, including physical intimacy.”
“Alright, we understand.”
Andrew nodded solemnly, making a mental note of every instruction. Holding Isabella’s hand, he gently guided her out of the hospital.
Sitting in the car, Isabella stared down at the test report in one hand, her other instinctively resting on her stomach. The reality of it all was settling in—there was a life growing inside her.
A quiet, unexplainable sense of attachment formed in her heart. As the car pulled into their driveway, Andrew suddenly spoke. “Don’t get out just yet.”
He walked over to Isabella’s side, drew in a deep breath, and gently opened the car door before carefully helping her out.
Ever since he found out she was pregnant, Isabella couldn’t shake the feeling that Andrew had started treating her like she was made of the most delicate glass.
Once inside, Isabella sank onto the sofa, amused as Andrew immediately crouched in front of her, his eyes scanning her face with concern. “Honey, are you feeling okay? Any discomfort?”
Isabella couldn’t help but chuckle at his exaggerated gentleness. “I feel fine. It’s only been a month, you know. Nothing feels different yet.”
Andrew frowned slightly, guilt creeping into his expression.
“I should’ve been more attentive. If I had been paying closer attention, I would’ve found out earlier.”
He sighed, then straightened up, pulling out his phone with a determined look, already preparing to make a call.
“Darling, I’ll get in touch with the best care team right away to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.”
Isabella instinctively reached for the hem of Andrew’s shirt, her brows furrowing slightly.
“Sweetheart, I just found out I’m pregnant. Don’t you think hiring a whole care team this early is a bit much? Besides, I already know a lot about pregnancy.” She couldn’t help but feel Andrew was being overly anxious.
Crouching in front of her, Andrew gently took her hand in his.
“Isabella, you mean everything to me, and this is our first time welcoming a little life into the world. Having a professional team means we’ll have someone to turn to whenever we have questions. Pregnancy isn’t just your journey—it’s ours. You’re carrying our baby, and I want to make sure you’re both safe, comfortable, and well taken care of. Everything you know about pregnancy comes from other people’s experiences, but now it’s happening to you. I just want to be prepared for anything. Okay?”
Isabella was touched by his thoughtfulness.
She stopped pushing back and nodded. “Okay, we’ll do it your way, Andrew.”
“Good. Just rest and leave everything to me.” Andrew stroked her hair gently before calling someone to arrange for the care team.
When Elaine heard that Isabella was pregnant, she rushed over to see her. Though Isabella was happy to see her, her complexion wasn’t great.
Having been through it herself, Elaine instantly recognized what was happening the moment she laid eyes on Isabella.
Without hesitation, she walked over and gently took her hand.
“Andrew said you weren’t feeling well and asked me to come keep you company. I figured it was morning sickness. Look at you—you’ve lost weight.”
Elaine’s eyes were full of concern and heartache. Not wanting her to worry, Isabella wrapped her arms around her in a warm hug. “Mom, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
But when mealtime came, the sight of the food on the table immediately made Isabella’s stomach turn. She barely had a second to react before she rushed away and threw up.
Elaine’s heart clenched, and she hurried to pat Isabella’s back, helping her breathe through it.
She glanced at the food on the table—it was plain, completely unseasoned. If even that made Isabella sick, what on earth was she supposed to eat?
Andrew watched as Isabella struggled with her symptoms, and an ache settled deep in his chest. He suddenly regretted not learning more about pregnancy before they decided to have a baby.
He moved to Isabella’s side, his heart clenching at the sight of her reddened eyes, clouded with discomfort. The ache he felt for her was far worse than if he had been the one suffering.
Gently, he placed his hand over her belly.
“Baby, your mom is already going through so much. Be good to her, okay?”
Andrew was completely at a loss, utterly helpless in the face of Isabella’s suffering.
He rarely, if ever, sounded this lost. Yet now, he found himself pleading with an unborn child—one who couldn’t hear or understand him.
Elaine sighed at the sight of him, then had someone clear the table, deciding to wait until Isabella felt better before offering her something else to eat.
But to everyone’s surprise, after Andrew spoke, Isabella’s nausea seemed to ease a little.
She took a sip of water, then, ten minutes later, looked at Elaine and Andrew.
“Mom, Andrew, I don’t feel so bad anymore. I think I want to eat something.”
Elaine’s face lit up.
“Sweetheart, what do you feel like eating?”
“Boiled shrimp, some bread… and a mug of cocoa would be perfect,” Isabella said.
She had always loved shrimp, but ever since she got pregnant, she couldn’t even stand the smell of it. The sudden craving made Andrew and Elaine exchange glances—it had to be a good sign.
“Alright,” Andrew said with a small smile. “You talk with Elaine for a bit. I’ll make everything for you right away.”
Even though Isabella hadn’t been able to eat much lately, he had stocked up on ingredients just in case. He quickly got to work, preparing everything with extra care.
Soon, he placed the boiled shrimp, fresh bread, and steaming cocoa in front of her. Carefully, he peeled a shrimp and placed it in her bowl, then watched her expectantly, along with Elaine.
Isabella picked up her fork, dipped the shrimp in sauce, and took a bite.
The flavor burst on her tongue, fresh and delicious, a stark contrast to the nausea she had felt earlier. “How is it? Do you want more?”
Seeing that Isabella wasn’t feeling nauseous after eating, Andrew carefully peeled another shrimp for her.
“Thank you, Andrew. I feel fine after eating it. It’s like my appetite suddenly came back!”
At her words, joy filled both Andrew’s and Elaine’s faces.
Elaine watched them—Andrew peeling shrimp with care, Isabella eating happily—and suddenly, she thought back to what Andrew had said to the baby earlier.
