Outside the door, Evie and Waylon stood frozen, their gazes locked in tense silence.
“You… you went to Mila that day?” Waylon asked hesitantly, his mind spinning as he suddenly recalled seeing a photo of a rare flower, one that only grew in Mila, on Evie’s social media page.
At the time, he had dismissed it as just a random stock image, but after hearing Jenny’s words earlier, a realization struck him—Evie might have taken that photo herself, in Mila.
Evie hadn’t expected that, after all her disappointment back then, the truth would turn out to be this.
She pressed her lips together and studied Waylon carefully. “So why were you unhappy that day?”
Waylon’s gaze remained steady, brimming with emotion. “Evie, before I answer that, can I confirm something first?”
“What is it?” Evie asked.
“Whether you like me or not!”
As soon as the words left his mouth, Waylon suddenly leaned in, his hand slipping behind Evie’s head, his lips just a breath away from hers. Evie’s eyes widened at his abrupt movement, her heart racing. But she wasn’t afraid. She simply closed her eyes, making no move to dodge him.
Though Waylon’s advance was sudden, he didn’t close the distance entirely. Their faces hovered barely a centimeter apart.
Evie felt nothing against her lips, yet Waylon’s warm breath sent a shiver down her spine.
Slowly, she opened her eyes and met Waylon’s gaze.
He pulled back just slightly, the intensity in his expression unwavering. “I don’t believe what you say, Evie. Your body’s subconscious reactions tell me the truth.”
A small smile played on his lips as he added, “You didn’t push me away. That’s how I know you like me.”
His expression softened, and he finally answered the question she had asked earlier.
“The night of your brother’s birthday, I called him… and I saw you. I couldn’t stop myself from feeling miserable when I thought about everything that happened between us.”
Hearing his words, Evie felt a rush of emotions, recalling how she had felt that night as well.
Now that the misunderstandings between them had cleared, she no longer felt the need to hide the truth.
She took a deep breath and said, “Honestly, I regretted what I did that night. I wanted to find you and explain everything, but then… I saw you with Jenny. And with all the rumors at the time…”
Her voice trailed off, but Waylon already understood. Without hesitation, he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.
“So many misunderstandings. We’ve been apart for too long.” Waylon’s tone was laced with regret.
After a moment, he gently let Evie go and looked at her seriously. “Evie, tell me honestly… if I hadn’t accidentally discovered that Laurinda wasn’t a man, were you planning to keep it a secret from me forever?”
It was painful to admit, but yes, that had been Evie’s plan.
Evie lowered her gaze, unsure how to respond, but Waylon already knew the answer just by looking at her. “You silly girl.”
With a fond sigh, he gently tapped her forehead, his words laced with both complaint and relief. Despite everything, he was just grateful he hadn’t truly lost her.
They left the hotel together, making their way to the parking lot. As they reached the car, Waylon suddenly turned to Evie. “Evie, what exactly is our relationship now?”
She stopped in her tracks, looking at him with uncertainty.
Waylon blinked at her, feigning disbelief. “Evie, you kept the truth from me all this time, and now that I know, you’re just going to walk away without making it up to me? Not even a little compensation?” After all, she had deceived him first. It was only fair that she took responsibility.
Evie sighed. “And how exactly do you want me to make it up to you? What kind of compensation are we talking about?”
Waylon’s lips curled into a teasing smirk. “Are you willing to do anything I ask?”
Evie had the urge to say it depended, but when she saw the hopeful look in his eyes, she hesitated—then gave a small nod.
“Alright then. Starting today, I want you to be my girlfriend.” Waylon’s voice was steady, unwavering. Then, as if to seal the deal, he added, “Do you agree?”
Evie looked up at him, her expression unreadable. Then, out of nowhere, she stood on her tiptoes and placed a light kiss on his lips.
“Waylon, did you feel my answer?” Evie asked, her eyes locked on his after the kiss.
In all the time he had known her, Waylon had never truly experienced the sensation of kissing her—not even that night, when the drugs had dulled his senses.
But this time… this time, he was completely sober. And the moment her lips brushed his, warmth spread through his entire body.
“Evie, I think this might just be the happiest day of my life.”
With that, he opened the car door for her, then slid into the driver’s seat beside her.
As he started the car, he couldn’t help but reach over and take her hand in his.
Evie glanced down at their entwined fingers, then lifted her gaze to his with a playful glint in her eyes. “Waylon, do you want to be even happier?”
“Huh?” Waylon blinked in surprise. “I’m already pretty happy. How could I possibly be any happier?”
Evie’s eyes sparkled with sudden excitement. “How about I go with you to meet your parents?”
“What!”
Waylon jerked upward in shock, barely avoiding a collision with the car’s ceiling.
Settling back into his seat, he drew a deep breath. “Evie, did you say that to bring me joy or to give me a heart attack?”
Evie’s gaze locked onto his, uncertainty dancing in her eyes. “Don’t you want me to meet your parents? Or are you implying that marriage isn’t in our future?”
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Waylon rushed to clarify.
“After everything we’ve weathered together, marriage has been my North Star. Even when you needed time, I never once considered anyone else. My reaction just now… I simply wanted to give you space to ease into this.”
“But I want what we have to be acknowledged by everyone,” Evie said. “If our families know, we can step into the light together.”
Waylon studied her face intently. Once their families knew, there would be no turning back. But seeing Evie’s determination, he knew this was a moment he couldn’t let slip through his fingers. “Alright, let’s head back to the Patton Manor right now.”
Later, Isabella’s phone lit up with Elaine’s call.
“Isabella, if you and Andrew are free, come home. Mom needs to discuss something important…”
As Elaine revealed the news about Waylon and Evie’s relationship, Isabella exchanged glances with Andrew, who sat across from her. With the phone on speaker, they both absorbed Elaine’s words in stunned silence.
“We’ll be right there, Mom.”
After ending the call, they wasted no time getting on the road.
In the car, confusion clouded Isabella’s thoughts. There hadn’t been a single hint of romance between Waylon and Evie—if anything, they’d seemed to repel each other. How had this happened under everyone’s radar?
She turned to Andrew. “Honey, did you have any inkling about Waylon and Evie?”
Andrew’s brow furrowed as he shook his head, though his composure remained steady. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. Everything will become clear when we arrive.”
“Okay.”
Isabella tried to rein in her racing thoughts. Upon arrival, her eyes immediately sought out the couple, finding them seated together in the living room.
They sat close, facing Elaine. As Isabella and Andrew entered, they caught sight of Evie accepting a perfectly ripe mango from Waylon’s hand, her smile radiating warmth. The tenderness in Waylon’s attentiveness left Isabella utterly astounded.
Waylon, known for his untamed soul, now gazed at Evie with unprecedented tenderness. He watched her delicately navigate the mango with her fruit spoon, his voice softening as he offered her more. The chemistry between them was undeniable, their connection genuine and magnetic. How had they managed to keep such profound feelings under wraps all this time?
Isabella and Andrew shared a knowing look, silently agreeing to save their questions for later. Their initial concerns had melted away at the sight before them.
Elaine rose quickly upon noticing them, an unfamiliar awkwardness creeping in as she met Andrew’s gaze.
After all, Evie was Andrew’s baby sister, considerably younger than Waylon. Despite her joy at their union, she couldn’t help but wonder if Andrew would have reservations.
