Laurinda noticed the shift in Jenny’s mood and tilted her head, her brows knitting together.

“What’s wrong?”

Jenny met her gaze, a storm of emotions churning inside her.

No wonder she had gotten so close to this person without eliciting any reaction. So it wasn’t that she lacked charm, after all. He was just not into women. A mix of frustration and unexpected relief washed over her.

She took one last look at Laurinda before pulling out her phone.

“Let me introduce myself properly. I’m Jenny Holmes. Nice to meet you. Can we take a picture together?”

Laurinda blinked at the sudden shift in conversation but nodded anyway, still somewhat baffled.

“I’m Laurin Tanico. Sure, we can take a picture.”

The two stood together, and as the camera shutter clicked, Jenny caught a faint trace of vanilla cologne lingering in the air.

With a subtle pang of disappointment, she parted ways with Laurinda. By the time Waylon arrived, Evie and Laurinda had already disappeared into the square.

Waylon took one look at Jenny—who had been buzzing with excitement over the phone just moments ago—and instantly noticed something was off. Her usual spark had dimmed.

“Jenny, what’s wrong?”

Jenny slipped her phone into her pocket and let out an exaggerated sigh, throwing her hands in the air.

“Waylon, you won’t believe this. Tonight, I thought I met the perfect guy—love at first sight! But then he told me he only likes men.” She looked at Waylon, her frustration giving way to a sense of shared misery. Thinking about his own tangled love life, she couldn’t help but feel they were both cursed in the romance department.

“We’re both so unlucky! This is what they call being in the same boat, right?”

Waylon felt an invisible dagger stab straight into his chest. Jenny’s casual words hit a little too close to home, and he found himself irritated—not at her, but at himself.

He hadn’t even planned to come here tonight. He had only shown up because he was worried about Evie and Laurin being together. And now, here he was.

The square was packed. Finding Evie and Laurin in this crowd was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

He glanced at Jenny, who was still in low spirits.

“Do you still want to watch the fireworks?”

Jenny straightened her shoulders, determination flickering in her eyes.

“Of course! I came all the way here. I’m not letting one bad moment ruin my night.”

They made their way into the square, finding a decent spot to watch the show. But despite their words, neither of them truly shook off their gloom.

Jenny sighed.

“I was planning to buy some fireworks and set them off myself after this, but… forget it. Waylon, let’s go get a couple of drinks instead.”

At the bar, after downing three glasses of wine, Jenny finally pulled out her phone again, her fingers hovering over the screen.

“Come on, Waylon. Look at this guy. If you ever run into someone like him again, you have to introduce us.”

She pushed the phone toward Waylon, her tone insistent. Waylon took the phone from her, glancing at the screen with mild curiosity. But the second he saw the photo—Jenny standing beside Laurin—his expression turned ice-cold.

“He lied to you.”

If Laurin was telling the truth—that he only liked men—then how had he ended up with Evie?

“Jenny, you’ve been deceived. I know him. He doesn’t like men.”

Jenny set down her glass, confusion flickering across her face.

“Then why would he lie to me?” Her mind raced through her interaction with Laurin, searching for any sign of deceit. But she shook her head.

“Waylon, I don’t think he was lying. And he had no reason to.” If Laurin liked women, wouldn’t it have made more sense for him to let Jenny throw herself at him?

Waylon knew Laurin wasn’t exactly loyal in relationships. The excuse he had given Jenny didn’t make sense.

There was a missing piece to this puzzle, and Waylon intended to find it. He frowned, deep in thought.

“Before today, I was certain Laurin liked women. But now, I’m not so sure.”

After parting ways with Jenny, Waylon couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

He stood in the courtyard of his home, a cigarette between his fingers, lost in thought. Dane spotted him and walked over, frowning.

“Did you forget what Mom said? No smoking.”

Waylon sighed and stubbed it out, glancing at his brother.

“Sorry. Dane, can you help me find someone?”

“Who?” Dane asked.

Without a word, Waylon sent him Laurinda’s photo.

“His name is Laurin Tanico. I need to ask him something.”

Dane studied the image before nodding.

“I’ll track him down as soon as possible.”

“Thanks, Dane.”

A day later, Waylon received a reply.

“The Laurin you mentioned doesn’t exist. But there is a Laurinda who looks exactly like this guy…”

Waylon stared at the message, a wave of realization crashing over him. So, the name was fake.

Did Evie know?

He wasn’t sure. But one way or another, he was going to find out. Closing his phone, he paced the room, his thoughts racing. Finally, he grabbed his car keys, stepped out the door, and drove straight to where Laurinda lived.

Waylon had to find Laurin and get to the bottom of things, needing to understand what had really happened between him and Evie back then. If he was truly into men, why had he pursued Evie? The thought troubled Waylon. If Evie ever learned the truth, it would break her heart, right?

Waylon was lost in thought along the way. Before he knew it, he had arrived, pulling up outside Laurinda’s apartment complex. But when he was about to get out, his gaze landed on Laurinda approaching from across the street, with a strikingly beautiful young woman beside him. They were both dressed in uniforms, one in a man’s and the other in a woman’s. Their closeness was undeniable, and their body language was so natural and affectionate that anyone watching would immediately assume they were a couple.

Waylon was so angry that he clenched his fists tightly and slammed the steering wheel hard.

“How could Laurin tell Jenny he likes men?” In a surge of anger, he took out his phone, his fingers tightening around it as he aimed the camera. He wanted to take photos and let Jenny see them for herself to understand what kind of person Laurin really was.

But when he was ready to capture the moment, Laurinda lowered her head in front of the young woman, who immediately reached out and took off her wig. Instantly, her medium-length black hair cascaded behind her back.

Waylon’s eyes widened in shock. He blinked rapidly, even rubbing them before opening them wide again as if trying to ensure he wasn’t imagining things. For a moment, he was so stunned that he completely forgot about taking photos.

Laurinda and the young woman headed straight toward where Waylon’s car was, talking and laughing happily. They were so absorbed in their conversation that they didn’t even glance in Waylon’s direction. They had no idea that the man sitting in the car next to them was Waylon.

Waylon snapped out of his daze and quickly put away his phone. His car door was slightly ajar, allowing him to catch snippets of Laurinda and the young woman’s conversation.

Laurinda said, “Indeed, being a handsome man has a price to pay. Taking off this wig makes my whole head feel relaxed.”

The young woman was tidying the wig in her hand when she heard Laurinda’s words. She teased, “What’s wrong? Handsome, are you tired? Do you regret pretending to be my boyfriend?”

Laurinda immediately shook his head vigorously and replied, “No, no, no. How could I regret it? Actually, it’s an honor to be the boyfriend of such a beautiful, gentle, and adorable young lady.”

The conversation between Laurinda and the young woman clearly reached Waylon’s ears, leaving his mind in chaos. Why did Laurin have long hair and a sweet, feminine voice? And what did they mean by pretending to be a boyfriend? Waylon wasn’t a fool. Based on everything, if he still couldn’t recognize that Laurin was a woman, he was really hopeless.
