Elton’s attention snapped to Denby, and he noticed Denby’s pained expression. As Denby’s driver approached, something dangerous flickered in Elton’s eyes. He whirled around, his voice sharp as a blade.

“You guys are really bold. How dare you openly attack Commander Thatcher! Where’s the security team? Arrest these people now!”

When the men had halted Denby’s car earlier, they had insisted on a private word. So Denby’s security detail stood vigilant by the vehicle, and his driver only approached when he spotted Elton, eager to brief him on the situation.

But Denby’s sudden distress, coupled with Elton’s commanding outcry, sent both driver and guards rushing forward in an instant.

The men sensed danger closing in. Their attempt to flee came too late — Elton had already moved to block their escape.

Fighting through his splitting headache, Denby watched helplessly as his security team, deceived by Elton’s performance, forcefully subdued the informants. The circumstances left him powerless to intervene. With his trust in Elton shattered, only one name echoed in Denby’s mind: Isabella.

He fumbled for his phone, managed to dial her number, but darkness claimed him before he could finish speaking. The phone slipped from his grasp as consciousness fled.

At the military hospital, Isabella and Andrew arrived breathless from their hasty journey.

The moment they entered Denby’s ward, they found Elton standing sentinel by the bedside, his posture deceptively casual.

“Lieutenant General Avila? You’re here too?” Isabella’s greeting held a note of surprise.

Elton nodded and proceeded to explain Denby’s situation, his words flowing with practiced precision.

“I took a day off today to visit a friend at the hospital. While passing through Zenis Road, I discovered several individuals acting suspiciously around Commander Thatcher. Though I managed to apprehend them, I regret I wasn’t quick enough to prevent harm to Commander Thatcher.” A shadow of guilt darkened his features as he spoke, his voice heavy with apparent remorse.

“If I hadn’t taken today off—if I’d been by his side as usual, none of this would have happened.”

Isabella’s sharp gaze traced Elton’s features as he delivered his account.

Something about his explanation nagged at her instincts—not wrong, exactly, but perhaps too perfectly delivered.

Isabella cast a worried glance at Denby, wondering if her fears were getting the better of her.

A heavy silence hung in the air. Andrew hadn’t uttered a word since entering the ward. He followed Isabella’s lead to Denby’s bedside, his footsteps echoing softly against the sterile floor.

The door creaked open as a doctor entered, his eyes moving between Isabella and Andrew with practiced assessment.

“You must be Commander Thatcher’s family?”

Isabella nodded, her voice tight with concern.

“We are. How is Denby doing?” The doctor’s grim expression spoke volumes before he even opened his mouth.

“Commander Thatcher’s physical condition appears stable at first glance,” he began carefully, “but our examination revealed something troubling. A bullet had been removed from his brain, and the wound has been putting pressure on his nerves and blood vessels.” He paused, choosing his next words with care.

“The recent emotional upheaval triggered significant complications, causing the injury to bleed. The prognosis is uncertain. We’ll do everything in our power through treatment, but I can’t make any guarantees.”

Isabella’s lips drew into a tight line. She hadn’t imagined Denby’s condition would be this complex, this dire.

Guilt washed over the faces of both the driver and head of the guard team.

“We should have never let Commander Thatcher speak to those people alone when they stopped the car!” The words tumbled out, heavy with regret.

A somber cloud descended over the ward. In the shadows, Elton masked his bitter disappointment at Andrew’s survival and stepped forward with false concern.

“Surely there’s hope for Commander Thatcher’s recovery,” he suggested smoothly.

“I’ve heard of a Dr. Mia whose medical expertise is extraordinary. Andrew, perhaps we could ask Dr. Mia to examine your grandfather?”

Isabella’s eyes flickered toward Elton, studying his expression. Andrew’s fingers found Isabella’s hand, his grip gentle but firm.

“I’ll see to it,” he replied.

His tone carried no trace of emotion, yet when Elton met Andrew’s dark, penetrating gaze, an unsettling sensation crept over him. It was as if those eyes could see straight through to his deepest secrets.

Elton hesitated for a couple of seconds before pulling his gaze away, his hands clenched tightly behind his back.

He despised this feeling of being beneath someone, as though Andrew was some untouchable figure towering above him while he was just a shadow lurking in the background.

Those troublemakers were utterly insufferable!

Thinking about the men who had been caught, Elton decided he couldn’t afford to linger any longer. He needed to deal with them properly before Andrew caught wind of anything suspicious.

He said, “Now that you’re here, I’ll be heading out. With Commander Thatcher’s illness, a lot of things need to be put on hold, and I have to check on a few matters…”

With that, Elton turned and left. Andrew then shifted his gaze to the driver and the head of the guards.

“Both of you, tell me exactly what happened. I want details.”

The two men exchanged uneasy glances. They weren’t sure why Andrew was questioning them again after Elton had already given his version of events, but they dared not disobey.

Carefully, they recounted everything they knew. After listening to their accounts from their own perspectives, Andrew fell silent for a moment before piecing it all together.

“So, when it happened, you only saw my grandfather looking unwell? You didn’t clearly hear what was said between him and those people?”

The driver and the head of the guards nodded.

Andrew’s gaze darkened slightly.

“Understood. You can go. Don’t mention this questioning to anyone.”

“Understood.”

After giving their assurances, the two men quietly exited the ward.

Now, only Andrew, Isabella, and Denby remained.

Andrew turned to Isabella.

“I know my grandfather. He wouldn’t have reacted so strongly without reason. Something must have happened that we’re not aware of. And Elton—he’s not to be trusted.” Isabella nodded in agreement.

Before arriving at the hospital, she had received a call from Denby. If nothing significant had occurred, Denby wouldn’t have made that call before losing consciousness.

She looked at Andrew, hesitating. Should she tell him the truth about his mother’s death?

Meanwhile, outside the hospital, Elton drove with a grim expression.

The plan to eliminate Andrew had failed, and Denby had gotten caught up in the mess. Though he had been quick to shift the blame onto those men, Denby had seen the note he wrote. Once he woke up, he would undoubtedly launch an investigation.

Elton tightened his grip on the steering wheel. The attempt on Andrew’s life would have to be postponed. As for Denby…

A calculating glint flickered in Elton’s eyes. The doctor had already said Denby’s condition was unstable. Maybe he was worrying for nothing. But he still needed to be prepared.

Back in the ward, Isabella changed into her medical attire and began assessing Denby’s condition.

With her experience in treating retired soldiers, she was confident she could help Denby, though it wouldn’t be easy.

“Andrew, don’t worry. I will wake Denby up, but…”

She hesitated, locking eyes with Andrew.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

She led him onto the ward’s balcony, where the air was cool and still.

“Regarding your mother’s death,” she began, her voice steady yet cautious.

“Denby once told me—it wasn’t an accident. Someone orchestrated it.”

She revealed everything she had been holding back.
