Once the military was involved, things got tricky. That was why the man felt it was crucial to inform Andrew right away.

Andrew’s gaze darkened slightly. This wasn’t what he’d expected at all. What a coincidence! Just after he brought Isabella to see Denby, now someone from the military was investigating her.

A wave of irritation surged inside him. He spoke curtly to the person on the other end, “Got it. Keep investigating and report any updates right away.”

“Yes, sir.”

After hanging up, Andrew made his way back to the ward. He glanced at Isabella, already fully immersed in her work.

He packed up his files and laptop from the table, grabbed his car keys, and headed out to the military compound, going alone.

At Denby’s residence, Denby widened his eyes as he watched Andrew follow a maid inside, his expression cold as ice.

“Who’s pissed you off now? You’re still mad even after coming here? Am I your punching bag?”

Andrew strode straight up to Denby, asking bluntly, “Did you arrange for someone to investigate Isabella?”

Denby’s mood soured immediately.

“What the hell are you saying? Me, arrange for someone to investigate Isabella? If I wanted to check her out, would I have let you bring her here just a few days ago? Someone’s investigating Isabella, and you come straight to accuse me? Do you have any sense? The Klein family is already in your hands, and now you’re coming to question me? At least get your facts straight first! I’m just quietly sitting at home, and here you are, accusing me!”

Denby’s fiery retort clearly denied Andrew’s question.

Andrew took a seat, his hands resting on his knees, his dark eyes thoughtful.

Denby stared at him, a little confused by what Andrew had said.

“You said someone’s investigating Isabella. What’s going on? Need my help to find out who?”

When Denby said this, he didn’t expect his grandson to actually ask for his help.

Andrew was known for handling things on his own, especially when it came to Isabella.

But as soon as Denby finished speaking, Andrew agreed immediately.

“Okay, help me out with this.”

He picked up a glass of water from the table and glanced at Denby with a calm, almost detached expression.

“Your military people are too nosy. Since you haven’t retired, you should keep your people in check.”

“What do you mean by that?” Denby straightened up, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes.

Andrew didn’t elaborate. He simply stood up.

“You’ll understand once you dig into it. Let me know what you find out.”

With that, he left. Denby remained seated, his usual stern face furrowed in thought.

He picked up the phone and dialed Elton’s number.

“Elton, get over here ASAP. It’s urgent.”

Outside the military compound, Andrew drove away but didn’t head straight back to the hospital. He kept driving along the wide road. Even though he’d asked Denby to handle the investigation of Isabella, how could he just sit back when it involved her?

The Patton family had only been in Ansport for a few years and hadn’t ruffled any feathers in the military. Also, Isabella had limited contact with the military.

The only link she had to the military was him.

But he’d been out of the military for years, so why would anyone be targeting her?

The more he thought about it, the more frustrated and uneasy he became. It seemed Isabella had somehow gotten caught up in something dangerous because of him.

He glanced at the empty avenue outside the military compound, parked his car on the side of the road, and stepped out, lighting a cigarette. Leaning against the car, he could still see Denby’s house in the distance.

A little while later, a black car pulled up outside the house.

The door opened, and Andrew watched as Elton stepped out. Though Elton didn’t see him, Andrew had a clear view of Elton entering Denby’s gate.

He wasn’t particularly close to Elton. Their paths rarely crossed.

But Elton was someone his grandfather treated almost like a son and had a good relationship with his mother. Andrew had always respected him for that. Now, it seemed Denby was calling on him to help with the matter concerning Isabella.

Andrew thought for a moment, then decided he needed to speak with Elton. Maybe he’d uncover something useful.

Andrew stubbed out his cigarette as he waited for Elton to step out of Denby’s house. The moment Elton emerged, Andrew eased his car into motion, tailing him from a careful distance.

Since Andrew went to the hospital with Isabella today, he was driving an inconspicuous black sedan—so ordinary that it didn’t even register in Elton’s mind. He had no idea that the car following him now belonged to Andrew.

Inside his vehicle, Elton sat with the windows tightly shut, his brow furrowed as he mulled over Denby’s words.

It had barely been a few days since Lowe discreetly investigated Isabella, yet Denby—despite his heavy workload overseeing military affairs—had caught wind of it almost immediately. That alone spoke volumes about the terrifying efficiency of the intelligence network under his control.

Elton, a man who had the authority to interfere with the military region’s intelligence department, knew for certain that no leaks had come from there. That left only one possibility—Denby had obtained the information through that elusive, shadowy force he commanded. As he weighed the power of the military region against this mysterious faction, a simmering resentment stirred within him.

If Denby had placed such an invaluable force under his command earlier, his standing in the military circle would have risen to an entirely different level.

But no—Denby had entrusted it to Andrew.

And now, with its razor-sharp intelligence capabilities, this very force had nearly traced everything back to him through the investigation into Isabella. If they had come this close, there was no telling what else they might uncover next time.

A dark glint flickered in Elton’s eyes. He wasn’t the only one in Denby’s camp. This time, he had been fortunate to receive such an assignment, but what about next time?

If damaging information about him ever surfaced, how would he suppress it?

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel as his car approached a fork in the road. Initially, he had considered waiting for the perfect opportunity to act. But now, hesitation was no longer an option. Isabella’s background had turned up nothing particularly remarkable. So why not act today? Denby’s attention was currently elsewhere, and if things went according to plan, he could easily shift the blame onto someone from the military region.

The moment he carried out his plan, he wouldn’t just remove Andrew—the most significant obstacle in his path—but he would also prove his worth to Denby.

Without Alvina and Andrew standing in his way, he, Elton, would be the most qualified to take Denby’s place when the time came. Weighing the risks and rewards, Elton slowly solidified his decision.

As the car neared the fork in the road, Elton knew the right turn would take him back to the military region. Without hesitation, he gripped the steering wheel and veered left instead.

Behind him, Andrew reached for the horn as Elton slowed for the turn, but then he caught sight of the sudden acceleration—Elton had deliberately changed course.

Andrew’s gaze locked onto the vehicle ahead, sharp and assessing. Given his assignment to investigate the military region, Elton should have returned straight away.

Even if there had been other matters delaying him, this abrupt change of mind was unusual.

His grip firm on the wheel, Andrew recalled the road’s destination. If his memory served him right, the left path led to only one place—the northwest corner of the military compound, where a Lieutenant General currently on administrative leave resided.

A shadow crossed Andrew’s eyes. There was nothing suspicious about a Lieutenant General paying a visit to another of equal rank.

However, given that this particular officer had been demoted from a general for clashing with Denby over political matters, Elton’s sudden visit to his residence seemed anything but ordinary.

Suspicion gnawed at Andrew as he pressed his foot down on the gas, continuing his pursuit.

Meanwhile, at the Patton family’s hospital, Isabella stepped out of the ward, scanning the hallway for any sign of Andrew.

Just as she wondered where he had gone, a veteran passing by noticed her and approached.

“Miss Patton, are you looking for Mr. Klein? I ran into him downstairs about two hours ago—he had some files with him. Said he left you a message.”

Isabella pulled out her phone and, sure enough, found a message from Andrew.

“Something came up. I’ll be back soon.”

She thanked the veteran and quickly typed a response.
