As soon as the call ended, Evie wasted no time. She booked a flight home immediately.

As dawn crept in, Isabella stirred, a comforting warmth enveloping her hand. Andrew was holding her close, his embrace steady and reassuring, filling her with an inexplicable sense of belonging. Slowly, she opened her eyes, her mind drifting to the plans for the day—one of which included visiting Andrew’s maternal grandfather.

Turning over in Andrew’s arms, she propped herself up slightly, letting her gaze linger on his striking features, the bedside light casting soft shadows over his face.

“Honey?” The moment she moved, Andrew stirred. His arms instinctively tightened around her, pulling her back into his embrace, his sharply defined chin resting atop her head.

As Isabella nestled against his firm chest, the subtle scent of sandalwood surrounded her—a scent uniquely his. This serene, intimate morning filled her with an undeniable sense of happiness.

But knowing they had a full day ahead, Isabella trailed her fingers up the side of Andrew’s face. She pinched him lightly.

“Honey, we can’t sleep in. It’s time to get up.” Her voice was soft, but Andrew only sank deeper into the warmth of the moment. Though awake, he refused to open his eyes.

Catching her hand, he pulled it back under the covers, playfully entwining his fingers with hers.

“Baby, stop it.”

Isabella eyed him, equal parts amused and exasperated. He was always so composed and distant, yet here he was, reluctant to rise, clinging to the morning’s tranquility. The contrast was unexpectedly endearing.

Her gaze traced the contours of his face—his dark brows, long lashes, the perfect bridge of his nose, and his light red lips. Every feature was impossibly well-proportioned.

Something stirred inside her. Acting on impulse, she tilted her chin and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.

But just as she was about to retreat, Andrew’s eyes snapped open. A firm hand pressed against her back, holding her in place.

In an instant, his lips claimed hers, his breath mingling with hers.

“Mmm…”

Isabella hadn’t expected this sudden shift—Andrew’s sleep-heavy laziness replaced by a forceful intensity. The moment swallowed her whole, leaving her breathless.

Passion filled the morning air, stretching time between them. An hour later, Isabella placed a hand on Andrew’s chest, stopping him before things escalated further.

“Honey, we still have important things to do today.”

Isabella’s dewy eyes fluttered as she gazed into Andrew’s deep, swirling dark eyes.

He gave a slight nod, and the hand resting on Isabella’s waist slowly retreated, his reluctance evident in the lingering touch.

“Alright. But after we visit my grandfather, we’re continuing this.”

Isabella chuckled softly, pressing a light kiss to his cheek, coaxing him out of bed.

They made their way downstairs for breakfast before heading out. The car ride took them to the military compound in Ansport.

The area was home to people of significant stature, and Isabella observed the heightened security as Andrew’s vehicle underwent multiple layers of inspection—despite his familiar presence.

The car finally came to a stop in front of a stately house at the heart of the compound.

“Honey, we’re here.”

Isabella followed Andrew, carrying the carefully selected gifts. She knocked on the door, stepping into the traditional courtyard beside him.

Andrew had already informed his grandfather of their visit.

As he and Isabella stepped into the courtyard, two distinguished-looking men in their forties emerged from the living room in succession. The first carried himself with an air of authority that clearly marked him as the superior.

Upon spotting Andrew, the leading figure approached with measured steps, his eyes gleaming with approval, as one might regard a promising protege.

“Andrew, visiting your grandfather?”

Andrew addressed the man with evident respect, gesturing toward Isabella.

“This is Lieutenant General Elton Avila, one of my grandfather’s most esteemed disciples.”

He then indicated the figure trailing behind Elton.

“And this is Lieutenant General Avila’s assistant.”

“Lieutenant General Avila, I’d like you to meet my fianc?e, Isabella Patton.”

“Hello, Lieutenant General Avila,” Isabella said warmly.

Elton’s face brightened.

“As this is our first encounter, I regret not having a gift prepared. I’ll be sure to remedy that next time, Isabella.” His gaze shifted to Andrew.

“Word had reached me about your remarkable choice in a partner. I must say, seeing you both together, I can tell you two are a perfect match!”

“Thank you, Lieutenant General Avila,” Andrew said.

Elton made his farewell brief.

“Don’t let me keep you from your grandfather. You should head inside—I must be on my way.”

“Alright, Lieutenant General Avila, take care.”

After watching Elton and his assistant depart, Andrew and Isabella followed a servant into the living room.

“Grandfather,” Andrew called out as they entered. He set down their gifts and led Isabella to sit down with him.

Despite all her mental preparations and imagined scenarios, nothing had quite prepared Isabella for the commanding presence of Andrew’s maternal grandfather in the flesh.

She bowed respectfully to the white-haired man who occupied the seat of honor, his bearing alone demanding reverence.

Though advanced in years, Denby Thatcher, Andrew’s maternal grandfather, radiated competence and authority. Time had etched its mark upon his features, yet he sat ramrod straight, emanating an almost tangible aura of power.

His penetrating gaze settled on Isabella.

“So you’re Isabella. Andrew has spoken of you. Indeed, you look impressive!”

Andrew knew his grandfather to be sparing with praise. From his understanding of the old man’s nature, this was clear evidence of genuine approval.

A soft smile graced Andrew’s features as he engaged in conversation with his grandfather. However, midway through their discussion, the elderly man’s attention suddenly shifted to Isabella.

“There are matters I wish to discuss with you privately, Isabella.”

Andrew’s grip tightened protectively around Isabella’s hand. She gave his fingers a gentle, reassuring squeeze.

“It’s okay, I’ll go with your grandfather.”

Witnessing Andrew’s protective reaction, Denby arched an eyebrow, his voice taking on a stern yet almost amused tone.

“Why such anxiety? I’m not going to devour her soul!”

Andrew’s lips tightened before he reluctantly released Isabella’s hand.

Outside the military compound, Elton settled into his vehicle, methodically pulling on a pair of black leather gloves. Gazing back toward the direction they had come, he spoke in hushed tones.

“Look into Isabella’s background. Andrew is reckless to have brought her here just like that. While Commander Thatcher acquiesced due to family bonds, we mustn’t let sentiment override caution. It’s our duty to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Denby’s influence cast long shadows in both military and political spheres.

As Denby’s direct subordinate, Elton had long held a position of trust and favor. With Denby advancing in years, and the tragic loss of his daughter—whom he had groomed with such care—during a mission, many whispered that Elton was being shaped as his successor.

The assistant, Lowe Cohen, ever dutiful, responded without hesitation, “I’ll begin the investigation immediately upon our return.”

In the study, Isabella trailed behind Denby, her mind dancing with possibilities about what he might want to discuss.
