Evie nodded faintly.
“Okay…”
Setting her phone aside, Evie lay down on the sofa.
If she couldn’t make sense of her thoughts, maybe sleep was the only escape. At least in sleep, she wouldn’t have to think, wouldn’t have to feel.
With a deep breath, she closed her eyes, choosing—for now—to shut out the world.
In Isabella’s office, she rose from her desk, having wrapped up the day’s work. Making her way to the tea station, she prepared herself a fragrant cup of flower tea, the delicate aroma filling the air.
Her phone’s gentle chime broke the peaceful silence. A glance at the screen revealed Damari’s name.
“Mr. Klein,” she greeted warmly.
A familiar chuckle resonated through the line.
“Isabella, are you busy these days?”
“Not too busy,” Isabella replied, settling into the plush sofa.
As their conversation flowed, it was clear that Damari treated Isabella with all the affection of a true grandfather. After their usual pleasant exchange, he said, “Isabella, it feels like ages since your last visit. I’ve missed you dearly. The fish in Klein Manor’s pond have grown wonderfully plump and fresh. When might you come by? I’ll have them caught specially for you in advance.”
Despite his reputation for being strong-willed and hot-tempered in his younger years—and even now maintaining a certain rigidity with others—Damari had developed a genuine soft spot for his future granddaughter-in-law. The moment those fish had reached the perfect size, he couldn’t wait to call her, knowing her appreciation for fine food.
“Andrew is always too busy to be found! I’d hoped he’d bring you over, but he wouldn’t answer his phone. So I thought, why not call you directly? These fish, they’re being saved just for you!”
Isabella couldn’t suppress a gentle laugh at his mock indignation, her heart warming at his thoughtful gesture.
“Mr. Klein, I’m touched you thought of us. I’ve checked our schedules—Andrew and I can come to the manor tomorrow morning.”
“Splendid!” Damari’s voice brightened.
“I’ll start the preparations right away, looking forward to your visit tomorrow.”
Later, when Andrew arrived to pick her up, Isabella shared the details of Damari’s invitation to Klein Manor.
“I noticed we’re both free tomorrow,” she said.
“Your grandfather’s being so kind—I went ahead and accepted. If anything comes up on your end, I can always let him know.”
“Tomorrow works fine,” Andrew replied, his tone unusually flat. His elegant fingers rested loosely on the steering wheel as he guided the car out of its parking space.
Something in Andrew’s manner set off warning bells in Isabella’s intuition. His typical stoic demeanor had shifted into something more… distant.
Though Andrew had always been a master of subtle expressions, this felt markedly different from their previous visits to Klein Manor. Was there something lurking beneath the surface that she wasn’t privy to? Or perhaps her imagination was working overtime?
After studying Andrew’s features for a moment longer and detecting no further signs of distress, Isabella pushed her concerns aside. Together, they focused on selecting appropriate gifts for their visit to the manor. The following morning found them pulling up to Klein Manor’s impressive entrance.
As Isabella stepped out of the car, she spotted Damari and the butler standing in the courtyard.
“Mr. Klein,” she called out warmly, raising her hand in greeting.
“Hi, Isabella.”
As Damari ushered Isabella toward the house, his demeanor shifted noticeably when his eyes fell on Andrew. A disapproving snort escaped him.
“You ungrateful boy—if it weren’t for Isabella visiting today, I doubt you’d have bothered showing your face!”
Andrew responded evenly, “Grandpa, you know I’d be here whenever you truly need me.” Andrew followed Isabella with measured steps, gifts in hand, his expression unchanged by his grandfather’s disapproval as they made their way to the living room.
Once they were seated, servants glided in with tea and delicate snacks. Damari showered Isabella with warm attention, inquiring about her work, life, and family—pointedly excluding Andrew from the conversation.
Though Isabella noticed the palpable tension between the two men, she kept her observations to herself. At the dining table, before an impressive spread of dishes, Damari turned to her with pride in his eyes.
“Well, Isabella, what do you think?”
The culinary mastery at Klein Manor had always left an impression on Isabella. Today’s spread was no exception—each dish a masterpiece that no amount of money could replicate in ordinary restaurants.
“They’re absolutely wonderful,” she replied warmly.
“Let’s enjoy them together.”
“Alright.”
The meal progressed in a veneer of harmony, bringing rare life to Klein Manor. Even Damari ate a lot.
Afterward, he eagerly drew Isabella into a game of chess. Their match was interrupted midway by her phone’s ring.
“No matter,” Damari said with understanding.
“Andrew can take your place. Go ahead and handle your business, Isabella.”
As Isabella relinquished her seat to Andrew and stepped away with her phone, Andrew and Damari faced each other. Damari made his move, then spoke with deceptive casualness.
“I heard about your recent activities. Isn’t managing Klein Group enough for you? Why do you have to get involved in those risky organizational missions? If you’d spared a thought for Isabella before acting, you’d never have made such a choice. Must I watch you follow your mother’s path?”
Andrew studied the chessboard, his expression calm as he placed a piece. Without looking up, he said in an even tone, “I know exactly what I’m doing. You don’t have to remind me—or bring up my mother every time. I made it clear from the start that one of my conditions for taking over the Klein Group was to uphold her legacy. You agreed to that.”
Damari’s grip tightened around his chess piece, his frustration evident.
“Agreed? Do you think I had a choice? Would I have said yes if you weren’t so damn stubborn?”
He let out a heavy sigh, his sharp gaze fixed on Andrew’s unyielding expression. The young man was every bit as headstrong as his parents had been.
“Your mother came from a different world,” Damari continued, his voice firm.
“She grew up in an environment most people wouldn’t survive in. I respected her choices and supported her. But before she and your father passed, they entrusted you and your sister to me—for a reason. They didn’t want you tangled in the same dangers they faced. I let a lot of things slide before, but this is different. You’re not alone anymore. Isabella is an incredible woman—she deserves your love and protection. Yet, instead of focusing on her, you went to find your maternal grandfather and got involved in the Perkins family’s affairs. First, the Perkins family—what next? One step into this world, and it will keep pulling you deeper. Listen to me, Andrew. Walk away. Withdraw from the Qiviut Organization before it’s too late. Your grandfather won’t trouble you for your mother’s sake.”
Andrew remained unmoved. Without a word, he poured Damari a cup of tea and nudged it toward him.
“It’s your turn,” he said simply.
“You—!” Damari clenched his jaw. That defiant look in Andrew’s eyes told him that he had no intention of backing down.
Placing his chess piece down, Damari lowered his voice, his tone laced with warning.
“If you refuse to listen, I’ll tell Isabella everything you’ve done. Let’s see if she’ll still stand by you after knowing you’ve joined that dangerous organization.”
Andrew’s hand stilled. His deep, unwavering gaze locked onto Damari.
“Grandpa.” His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable edge to it.
Damari hesitated, realizing that even this threat couldn’t shake Andrew’s resolve. He sighed inwardly. No matter what he said, Andrew wouldn’t back down. Frustration welled up inside him.
“Fine, fine,” Damari huffed, waving his hand.
Dismissively, Damari huffed, “I won’t say anything. Happy now? You stubborn brat—you never listen. You’re getting more and more annoying.” He pushed the chessboard aside.
“Forget this game. Just go. I don’t even want to see you right now.”
As Damari gestured for Andrew to leave, Isabella walked back into the room. She looked at the chessboard, now a complete mess, and frowned.
“What happened here?” she asked, glancing between the two men.
Damari shook his head, but the moment he looked at Isabella, his frustration eased. She was the granddaughter-in-law he had chosen, and just seeing her made him feel a little better. Yet, at the same time, it reminded him of why he was so upset with Andrew.
“I’m fine,” Damari said with a sigh.
