He stood beside Andrew, anticipation building with each passing moment. Yet as Andrew continued to pore over the files in silence, Eaton’s initial enthusiasm began to waver.
Chief was an outsider, confronting the labyrinth of Perkins family dealings for the first time. His prolonged silence while reviewing the documents stirred an unsettling thought in Eaton’s mind—perhaps even Chief would find himself stymied by the Perkins family’s iron grip on Estresa.
After thinking for a while, Eaton said, “Chief, the Perkins family’s issues can’t be resolved in a day or two. Although they act arrogantly, they don’t leave any evidence. Even if we want to pursue the investigation, we don’t have enough grounds.”
As he spoke, helplessness and frustration filled his heart.
Andrew had just finished reading the last page of the files when he heard Eaton’s words. He looked at Eaton and nodded slightly.
“The fact that we couldn’t find evidence before doesn’t mean we can’t do it in the future. Mr. Rachford, do you understand what I mean?”
Eaton met Andrew’s dark eyes, and he was shocked when he realized the implications of Andrew’s words.
Andrew meant they shouldn’t look for evidence. Instead, they should just let the Perkins family make more mistakes and then use those as evidence.
Eaton was stunned. It was as if he couldn’t believe these words came out of Andrew’s mouth. Obviously, Andrew didn’t seem like someone who would say such things.
Andrew looked at Eaton with furrowed brows.
“What? Do you think it’s inappropriate?”
Eaton quickly shook his head. Actually, Andrew’s words gave him a different perspective. He had been trying to find evidence to punish the Perkins family but had never succeeded.
The situation with the Perkins family was special. That was why a special task force had been assigned to deal with them this time, aiming to convict the Perkins family.
Needless to say, Andrew deserved his rank. His way of thinking was completely different from ordinary people like them.
So, Eaton asked, “Chief, what do you think we should do?”
Andrew looked at Eaton and said, “I heard that the Old area in the west of Estresa is preparing for renovation. Is it true?”
Eaton was momentarily stunned, his confusion evident.
“Yes, Chief, that’s correct. Do you have any instructions?”
Andrew didn’t answer. Instead, he tapped the files on the table twice with his slender fingers.
Eaton immediately caught on to what Andrew was saying. His eyes lit up with anticipation.
“Chief, do you mean…?”
Seeing that Eaton had made the connection, Andrew nodded and said, “Then get to work. You’ll be handling the negotiations with the Perkins family personally. Can you manage it?”
“Of course, I can, Chief. Rest assured, I’ll bring you good news soon.”
Andrew was so busy that it was already late when he finished his work. He only had the chance to check his phone when he returned to the hotel from the government building. There were some unread messages.
He first opened the message from Isabella.
“Honey, did you get there safely?”
Andrew’s eyes softened, filled with tenderness. His fingers started tapping on the screen.
“Yes, I arrived. I’m sorry for the late reply. I just saw your message.” After sending the message, Andrew looked at the time on his watch. Isabella should already be asleep by now. Suddenly, his phone rang.
His brows furrowed in surprise. It was Isabella video calling. He quickly answered, his voice softening as he greeted her.
“Honey, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
When Isabella saw Andrew’s face on the screen and the environment behind him, her worries finally dissipated.
“You haven’t replied to my message, so I thought I’d wait a little longer.”
Her words stirred a pang of guilt in Andrew’s heart. He had been so eager to resolve the Perkins family’s issues soon and return to Ansport that he had overlooked how much Isabella would worry after he left for the business trip.
“Honey, I’m sorry. I should have taken the initiative to tell you I arrived here safely,” Andrew said apologetically.
Isabella shook her head.
“It’s fine, but remember to do it next time.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Andrew and Isabella, separated by distance, had a lot to tell each other.
Two days later, at the Perkins family’s residence, Aldwin Perkins glanced at his subordinate and asked, “Are you certain the government is planning to redevelop the old area in the west of Estresa?”
The subordinate nodded confidently.
“The information is accurate. Mr. Eaton Rachford personally chaired a meeting to finalize the plan.”
Aldwin nodded thoughtfully, his mind racing as he pondered the information.
Now that the power of the Perkins family had taken a hit, the Welch family and others who were not on good terms with the Perkins family were all looking for an opportunity to cause trouble. His daughter, Lilian, had gone to Ansport to seek cooperation with Homelight Enterprise. If he could also secure development cooperation for the west area of Estresa, the Perkins family would have the leverage to reassert its dominance. Once that was in place, they would not only silence their rivals but also reclaim their rightful position at the top, unchallenged and untouchable.
A strong sense of ambition flashed through Aldwin’s eyes. He said, “Check Eaton’s schedule and invite him for coffee.”
“Okay, Mr. Perkins.”
Aldwin watched as his subordinate left to carry out his order, his mind already moving to the next phase of his plan.
Eaton pulled up to a coffee shop and stepped out of his car. After scanning his surroundings, he strode toward the entrance, his men following closely behind.
Aldwin was already in a private room on the fifth floor, waiting for Eaton. When he received word that Eaton and his men had arrived, he immediately rose from his seat to greet them.
He greeted Eaton with a polite smile.
“Mr. Rachford, you’re finally here. You look even better since the last time we met.”
“Likewise, Mr. Perkins.”
“Come, please sit down.”
After exchanging pleasantries, Eaton and Aldwin engaged in casual conversation, carefully skirting around the main topic. Eventually, Aldwin could no longer hold back. He leaned forward slightly and said, “Mr. Rivera, to be honest, there’s a reason I invited you here today.” After speaking, Aldwin subtly signaled one of his men, who immediately stepped forward, carrying a rectangular box.
“Mr. Rachford, I have always known you like refinement. I unintentionally got this thing when I went to Ytrovia last time. You know, I am a simple man and can’t appreciate it. But since we’re friends, I want to ask for your opinion.”
Aldwin motioned for his man to place the box in front of Eaton. The moment he lifted the lid, his eyes were met with a long-lost masterpiece—an exquisite royal treasure that had vanished overseas a century ago.
He looked at Aldwin, and with a measured tone, he mused, “You must have gone to great lengths to acquire such a remarkable piece.”
Aldwin let out a low chuckle.
“Oh, that’s hardly the point. What matters is your opinion—what do you think of this painting?”
Eaton’s admiration was evident as he responded, “It’s extraordinary.”
Aldwin smiled knowingly.
“Then it seems fate has worked in its favor. Mr. Rachford, you have the keen eye to appreciate its brilliance at a glance. This painting has found its rightful audience. You know, when I hold it, I feel nothing. They say a masterpiece needs a worthy beholder. Why don’t you take it and appreciate it as it deserves?”
“Haha, Mr. Perkins, you must be joking.” Lifting his cup, Eaton took a slow sip before speaking again.
“A painting of such global renown, handed to me just like that? Even if you are willing to part with it, I wouldn’t dare accept such a gift so casually.”
Aldwin waved off his concern.
“Mr. Rachford, there’s no need for such formalities between us. Given our rapport, this is merely a fitting gift for a true connoisseur. Of course, I know you for your integrity and loyalty. I only hope that, in the days ahead, you might offer some guidance to me…”
