“But I love you,” he whispered.

“I know and I am sorry. I wish I could say these next years will be easy for you. For all of you,” Soren paused. “But I can not. I wish things were different. But they aren’t. If I could change anything it would be to save my mate from the darkness, not change who my mate was.”

“Really, even still? Even after everything?” Mac scoffed.

“Even after everything. I hate who Devlin has become, but I will go to the grave loving the man he was. You cannot understand how a mate wraps you inside of themselves. How the very breath in their lungs become a whisper of peace to your very soul. The beat of their heart becomes the song that repeats in your mind. You cannot understand, not now, but you will.”

“Soren, you can’t possibly mean that. Look at you.” Terran gestured to her body.

“I will not allow myself to go beyond the veil with hate in my heart. His darkness is not worth my afterlife. Now I need you to listen.”

“But…”

“No, Cal. Your time will come. I swear to you. But your time is not with me. It was never meant to be me. Now listen.”

“Okay.” The others all nodded and settled closer so that Soren didn’t have to strain.

“Zeph, I changed my mind, I need you to go gather the eggs from every Keep with Terran. You’re faster. You can use the winds to move you. Mac, can you go get Jay? I also need a few things for you to collect along the way. River, I need you and Cal to pick through here. See if he made it to all of my nests. Hopefully, there are a few that could have possibly made it.”

“What about you?”

Soren chuckled sadly. “I will be here. I’m creating a cocoon around the poison. I need to focus on that to extend the time I have left. I need to do one last thing here before I fade.”

“What do you have to do?”

“I’ll explain in due time. Go do as I asked.” All the men left, and Araiya felt the dream start to slip away again. “Before you go Araiya, come here. Let me have a look at you.” Araiya jolted in the shadows and then walked towards the woman.

She was beautiful. Even now, as she lay limp on a broken settee. Her white hair stained rusty with her blood was hanging limp around her body. Her purple eyes had dulled to a blue-gray. Her full lips were almost as pale as her skin now.

“You can see me?” Araiya asked.

“Yes, I can see you. Goddess, you are beautiful. We are connected, you and I. Spirit is an element like no other.”

“Did you see me every time?”

“No. I never saw you, just felt your presence.” Soren smiled.

“I just seem to relive your worst days.”

“I’m sorry that you have to relive these days. I wish you could see the others. The ones where we had a happy and full life, before all of this. But those memories won’t help you. Did you come to learn or to observe today?” Soren asked.

“I don’t know,” Araiya answered honestly.

“You don’t know what?”

“Most days it feels like I don’t know anything anymore.”

“Well, that’s a good start.” Soren smiled.

“What?”

“Some people think they know everything and refuse to learn anything more. Others know some things, but even that can interfere. Spirit, like I said, is unlike anything else in the world. If you try to base your ability off what you already know or think to be true, you won’t learn your true potential. Are you following?”

“I think so.”

“Now, when you know nothing, you’re open to possibilities. Someone who knows nothing won’t question the rules and how it is supposed to unfold. A blank slate, some might say. Now that is a wonderful starting point.”

“I am very confused.”

“That’s alright. Who isn’t?

“Soren?” She nodded. “I’m afraid,” Araiya confessed.

“Why, my darling girl?”

“I do not know where I am. And I do not know if anyone’s coming.”
