“Boom—” A brilliant flash of lightning split the heavens, followed by the deep growl of thunder. As the storm descended on this fateful morning, Waylon’s world shattered like glass beneath a hammer blow.

Halfway down the road, Evie and Laurinda found a secluded spot to pull over.

Their eyes were fixed on the surveillance feed from the villa, where Waylon remained motionless as a statue. With each passing moment, anxiety gnawed deeper into Evie’s heart.

“Evie, should we go back?” Laurinda’s voice wavered as she watched Waylon’s lost expression, her own heart heavy with sympathy. Evie’s distress was palpable in the confined space of the car.

“You know, if there are genuine feelings between you two, perhaps you could be together. Maybe whatever’s keeping you apart has a solution?” Laurinda’s gentle suggestion hung in the air as Evie remained transfixed by the video feed, her silence speaking volumes.

Ten minutes crawled by before Laurinda spoke again.

“Evie, the rain’s getting worse. Are you really going to let him stand out there?”

Conflict flickered across Evie’s features as her hand moved to the ignition. But before she could turn the key, Waylon stirred to life.

She froze, watching as he walked away with purposeful strides. His trench coat, heavy with rain, seemed to weigh on his shoulders, yet each step grew more determined than the last, his back straight with resolution.

The villa that had kept Waylon standing for thirty minutes now witnessed his departure in mere seconds as he strode beyond the camera’s reach, like a ghost fading into memory.

“Will he be alright?” Laurinda ventured softly.

“Should I try talking to him?”

“No need.” Evie’s voice was barely a whisper as she stared at her lap.

“He shouldn’t waste his time on me. Let’s get something to eat.”

Their meal passed in silence, the food turning to ash in their mouths. Finally, Laurinda spoke.

“I bear some responsibility for this. Please reach out if you need anything.”

Drenched to the bone, Waylon didn’t return to the Patton Manor, making his way to another residence in Ansport.

Peeling off his rain-soaked clothes, Waylon stepped directly into the shower’s spray, letting the water cascade over him.

When the last drops fell silent, he wrapped a towel around his waist and confronted his reflection. Dark eyes stared back at him from the mirror, hollow yet piercing, while a sardonic smile played at his lips. With measured steps, he left the steam-filled bathroom.

His fingers found his phone, muscle memory dialing his agent.

“About your previous offer to work abroad—I’m ready. The sooner I can leave, the better.” His voice carried a finality that brooked no argument.

Later that afternoon at Edge Entertainment, Isabella sensed an unfamiliar edge to Waylon’s demeanor the moment he walked in.

“Waylon, why are you here? Please, have a seat.”

Isabella moved to fetch refreshments, but Waylon halted her with a gesture.

“Don’t trouble yourself—I have a flight to catch. Just came to say goodbye.” His words carried a weight she’d never heard before. Concern creased Isabella’s brow.

“Where are you headed? How long will you be gone?”

“Mila,” he replied, his voice steady.

“As for how long… that remains to be seen.”

Isabella studied her brother’s resolute expression, recognition dawning that his mind was already made up.

“Then I wish you all the best and hope you achieve your goals!”

“Thank you!” Waylon hugged Isabella, a ghost of his old smile flickering across his face.

“Take care of yourself. If anything happens, call me—I’ll drop everything and come back.”

Back in her bedroom, Evie lay restless, haunted by the image of Waylon standing rain-soaked before the villa.

The memory played on repeat, stealing her sleep until dawn painted shadows beneath her eyes—shadows she carefully concealed with makeup the next morning.

When she emerged from her room, her gaze drifted instinctively to the dining table. Only a two-day-old bouquet of lilies greeted her—no warm breakfast awaiting her arrival, there was no familiar presence filling the space. Though disappointment settled in her chest, regret didn’t follow. She forced her lips into a smile, willing her spirits to lift.

The kitchen felt like a stranger’s now, so different from just two weeks ago. She mechanically prepared her simple breakfast of warmed milk and bread before heading to the company.

“Is Miss Patton available?” she asked Isabella’s assistant outside the office.

Hearing her voice, Isabella beckoned her inside.

“I noticed there’s a music competition show coming up. I’d like to join as a mentor.” Evie’s singing skills were definitely good enough to be a mentor.

“Your schedule’s already packed tight,” Isabella cautioned.

“Adding this would eliminate any free time. Are you certain about this?”

Evie needed the distraction of work, something to fill the hollow spaces in her mind.

“I’m sure. Work gives me purpose.”

“Very well. I’ll send the contract to your agent. You’re well-suited for this program anyway.”

Isabella’s greatest wish was simple—to wrap everything up and then kick back and enjoy life without a care in the world. Unfortunately, she was still chasing that elusive finish line. She couldn’t help but shake her head.

“You’re all such workaholics. I feel like the odd one out among you all.”

“Are you talking about Andrew?” Evie asked, raising an eyebrow.

“No, I’m talking about you and Waylon. One of you is going to be on a music show, and the other flew off to Mila for work yesterday afternoon. You both act like you’re all about having fun, but you’re working so damn hard.”

“What? He’s gone to Mila?” Evie’s eyes widened, and she sprang to her feet, stunned.

“Yeah, he left in a hurry. You didn’t expect that, did you?” Isabella said.

“Although he doesn’t seem reliable at times, when he’s focused on work, there’s no one more driven than him. His trip to Mila will probably last a while. I don’t know when we’ll see him again. Anyway, Evie, take a look at these terms. If everything looks good, I’ll send it to your agent.” Isabella slid the laptop towards Evie.

Evie’s gaze moved to the screen, but she couldn’t focus.

“Isabella, I trust what you’ve arranged for me. Thank you,” Evie said, before hurrying off. Isabella glanced back at the contract and dialed Andrew’s number.

Andrew was lost in thought when he heard that Evie had asked for additional work.

He knew his sister—she wasn’t one to bury herself in work. Her unusual behavior made him wonder if he had been neglecting her too much lately.

That evening, Evie returned to the villa to see a Rolls-Royce parked out front. Her older brother was standing beside the car, waiting. A sudden wave of emotion welled up in Evie’s eyes, and she paused, taking a moment to compose herself.

“Andrew, why are you here?” she asked as she approached him, her bag in hand.

“Just checking up on you.” Andrew’s intense gaze mirrored his sister’s.

“Aren’t you going to invite me inside?”

This had always been their way. Evie quickly responded, “Of course I will! My dear brother, please, come inside!”

From the moment Andrew had arrived, he’d been watching her closely, though Evie gave nothing away. When they stepped inside, the warmth of the house eased some of his worries. The decorations had changed, giving the place a homier, more inviting feel.

They sat together, and Andrew fixed his gaze on Evie.

“No matter what happens, I’ll always be your strongest support. If anything’s troubling you, you need to tell me. You’re our family’s precious one. You don’t need to face everything on your own. Understand?”

Andrew’s words cut through to Evie’s heart. She felt her nose sting as tears welled up.

Laughing through the tears, she wiped her face with a tissue and nodded.
