“If you want, of course.”
Andrew’s gaze softened as he looked at Isabella, and his tone, full of tenderness, made his friends uncomfortable. They quickly moved away to focus on their own competition.
Andrew led Isabella to the equipment and helped her put on the virtual reality glasses. The setup was top-tier, and to Isabella, it felt incredibly realistic.
From her vantage point, Andrew seemed to randomly pick a gun. But when she saw the model, a flicker of caution crossed her face.
Isabella recognized the gun—it was one specifically used by members of the Qiviut Organization, not the type ordinary soldiers would train with. Where had Andrew learned to use this weapon?
Before she could dwell on it, Andrew had already begun hitting the moving targets with precision.
“Want to try?”
As Isabella marveled at his accuracy, Andrew leaned closer to her ear and asked her the question.
She considered it for a moment, then picked up a standard handgun.
“I’ll use this one.”
She aimed at the target, firing several accurate shots.
“Baby, you’re incredible!” Andrew’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You’ve trained before?”
“Yeah.” Isabella nodded, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“How about a contest?”
A friendly competition began, and for a while, they put aside all other thoughts to focus solely on the game.
Waylon woke up the next morning with a pounding headache. Rubbing his forehead, he reached for his phone and noticed he had missed several calls from Isabella. He quickly dialed her number.
“Isabella? I missed your calls yesterday. What’s up?”
Isabella was having breakfast with Andrew when she answered the phone.
“I was just calling to ask you out. Waylon, have you been busy lately? You’re not just finishing work now, are you? Work never stops, but you need to take care of yourself too. Try not to stay up all night rushing to finish your tasks,” Isabella said, her voice laced with concern.
Waylon felt a warmth spread through his chest.
“Don’t worry. I slept well yesterday. But I do have something going on. I’ll be the first to tell you when it’s done.”
“Okay then, I’ll wait for your good news.”
After hanging up, Waylon knew Isabella had misunderstood, but he didn’t feel the need to explain.
There were countless conflicts between him and Evie, like a series of hurdles stacked one after another. But Waylon held onto the belief that if he persevered, he’d eventually clear them all.
He glanced at the time; it was time to bring Evie her breakfast. With swift movements, he washed up, changed his clothes, and drove off. The weather was gray and dreary, and it took Waylon longer than usual to pick up the breakfast and make his way over.
When he parked in front of Evie’s house, a cold shiver ran down his spine. He saw a scene that made his heart clench.
A man he didn’t recognize was walking out of the house with Evie. She was letting him hold her hand, and they looked too comfortable, too close.
It was early in the morning, and the man was leaving Evie’s house. The implications were painfully clear.
Waylon felt a crushing weight on his chest, as though his heart was being squeezed from the inside. It was hard to breathe.
Maybe there was some misunderstanding.
A flicker of hope still glimmered in Waylon’s eyes. He clenched his fists, then loosened them, finally taking a step forward.
At the entrance, Evie turned to Laurinda, a trace of guilt on her expression.
“He usually shows up around this time. I didn’t expect him to be late today. I’m sorry you couldn’t go home last night.”
Laurinda didn’t seem bothered at all and offered her analysis.
“Maybe your attitude yesterday threw him off. As for me, don’t feel bad about it. Your bed was really soft.”
Waylon, who had just arrived, overheard the last part. In that instant, all illusions of the situation fell away, and reality hit him like a slap in the face.
After Evie finished speaking with Laurinda, she turned around and her eyes locked with Waylon’s. Both of them froze in place. When had Waylon arrived? Had he heard everything?
Evie panicked, her face flashing with anxiety. Laurinda reacted more quickly. As long as her gender wasn’t revealed, everything could still be salvaged.
Without missing a beat, Laurinda wrapped her arm around Evie’s waist and raised an eyebrow, asking in a teasing tone, “Honey, who’s this?”
Waylon’s expression darkened at the endearment Laurinda used for Evie.
Evie, catching the cue, quickly regained her composure.
“He’s my friend.”
She turned to Waylon and repeated the rehearsed lines.
“Waylon, I said what I needed to say to you yesterday. Is there anything else you need from me today? If not, we should go.”
Waylon looked at Evie’s cold, indifferent posture, his eyes burning with frustration.
“Evie, won’t you introduce the man next to you? Why is he coming out of your house?”
Evie replied nonchalantly, “I’m sure you can guess. As for the name, what was it again, Lau—?”
She turned to Laurinda, who quickly replied, “Laurin Tanico, honey, I told you last night. How could you forget?”
Evie ignored her, speaking directly to Waylon.
“His name is Laurin.”
Waylon stood there, utterly flabbergasted by their casual exchange.
“Evie, are you telling me you just met last night? And you actually brought someone like this home?”
“So what if we just met last night? Can’t we fall in love at first sight?” Laurinda stood beside Evie, towering over her with one hand resting on her waist.
She raised her chin, casting a glance at Waylon before saying, “You’re just a friend of Evie’s, not her brother. Why do you care so much?”
“Laurin, you can’t talk to my friend like that,” Evie retorted, playing her part perfectly.
“Alright.” Laurinda pouted and fell silent.
Waylon stood there, stunned by the absurdity of it all. With great difficulty, he turned to Evie.
“Evie, how can you be with a man without knowing his background? Do you know his intentions?”
Evie lowered her eyes, her voice flat.
“I don’t need to know his intentions. We drank together, got what we wanted, and I let him stay for the night. He’s treating me to breakfast now. It’s a fair exchange. We might never see each other again. Isn’t that fine?”
“But how can you be so casual about these things? You’ll get hurt…”
“Waylon,” Evie said, her tone cool, “not everyone is like you, chasing after ideal relationships. This world isn’t perfect. You should go home. We’re going to eat.”
Thunder rumbled across the sky as Evie and Laurinda departed, their car pulling away from Waylon, who stood rooted to the spot, watching them disappear into the distance.
Standing at the villa’s entrance, Waylon gazed at the familiar surroundings that now felt like a stranger’s world, as if someone had altered reality while he wasn’t looking.
