Waylon’s smile faltered, a shadow crossing his face.

“Why are you suddenly saying this?”

“I think it’s best to say it now.”

A knot tightened in Waylon’s chest. He’d only just begun to feel like his relationship with Evie was getting better, and now, she wanted to pull away.

He asked, “Did I do something wrong that made you unhappy? Tell me, and I’ll change!”

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Evie glanced toward the restaurant they hadn’t entered yet.

“You’ve done very well. That’s why I’m saying it’s enough. Waylon, you don’t need to do anything else to make up for it.”

Waylon’s brows furrowed. How could this be enough? He liked Evie. He wanted more than to just make up for something.

He studied Evie’s resolute expression, and without thinking, he blurted, “Evie, do you know what I saw in your eyes when you said those words just now?”

Evie stared back at him, unsure.

“Your eyes told me that you need me, and I can’t just leave you alone. In short, everything will be over only when I feel like I’ve done my part!”

At that moment, it was clear they weren’t going to have dinner together. Waylon didn’t want to hear the words that he knew Evie was going to say. So he quickly turned and walked away.

Evie stood there, frozen, staring after his retreating figure. His words echoed in her mind.

Had her eyes really given away what she felt?

A cool breeze swept over her, and she felt the sting of cold. A tissue was gently offered to her from the side.

“Miss, do you want to wipe your tears?”

Evie turned in surprise to see a tall figure standing before her, the sun casting his shadow across her. The man was still holding the tissue out, his handsome face full of gentle concern. His voice was soothing.

“Thank you.”

Evie accepted the tissue. It felt soft, with a faint, pleasant fragrance. The man spoke as though they were old friends.

“I saw you with a handsome guy earlier. Um… did he mistreat you?”

Evie was naturally wary of strangers, but for some reason, she didn’t feel the need to avoid this one. She’d kept everything about her situation with Waylon bottled up, but for some reason, she felt a strange urge to confide in this man.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why are you crying?” The man gestured for her to sit.

“Don’t be afraid. Maybe I can help.”

Evie lowered her gaze and briefly explained her situation with Waylon. The man listened carefully and then summarized, “So, after you two ended up together once by chance, he tried to pursue you, but you didn’t agree?”

It wasn’t exactly pursuing, Evie thought to herself.

The man then asked, “Is it because you don’t think he’s a good person? Or is there something else?”

Evie pursed her lips.

“He’s a good guy. The problem is with me.”

The man fell silent for a few moments. Evie looked up, meeting his eyes, and her heart skipped a beat. She then explained, “I have a reason why I can’t be with him.”

“I understand.” He didn’t press her for the reason. Instead, he offered, “I have an idea to make him give up and stop bothering you. Do you want to hear it?”

“I do.” Evie nodded firmly.

The man then suggested, “You can ask a friend to pretend to be your boyfriend. Once he sees that, he’ll definitely give up.”

Evie’s hand tightened unconsciously, but she didn’t respond right away.

“What’s wrong? Do you think it’s not a good idea?” the man asked, sensing her hesitation.

“Some of my friends have tried this, and it works wonders.”

“Thank you for your suggestion, but I don’t like involving other men. This method isn’t for me.”

Evie stood up, gave the man a polite smile, and said, “Thank you, sir. I feel much better now. If you have time, can I buy you a cup of coffee?” She offered the invitation, ready to wrap up the conversation, but she noticed the man was staring at her intently.

Evie subconsciously took a step back, and the person stood up, saying,

“Miss, how do you feel about me?”

“What?”

“How do you feel about me being your boyfriend?” the man blurted out.

“I know you’re not fond of interacting with men, but I’m not a real man, so if that’s the issue, I can play the part.”

Evie looked at the “man” in front of her—about six feet tall, with black hair and a white hand rising to touch “his” temple. With a flick of “his” slender fingers, “his” long hair cascaded down, the motion graceful.

“Let me introduce myself. I’m Laurinda Tanico. Unemployed, and as you can see, I’m really into role-playing. You just called me ‘sir,’ which means you think I’m good at acting, right? If you’re willing, I’d be happy to help!”

Laurinda extended a friendly hand. Evie, still in shock, suddenly realized that the method Laurinda proposed seemed plausible. Evie hesitantly took Laurinda’s hand. An hour later, in the caf?, they began planning the details of their “fake couple” scheme.

Meanwhile, Waylon, looking downcast, returned home, headed straight for the bar, and opened a bottle of liquor, drinking it down. The alcohol quickly dulled the ache in his heart. Collapsing on the sofa, half of his body sprawled out, he passed out drunk, oblivious to the missed call from Isabella.

In a black Maybach, Isabella held her phone, confused.

“That’s weird. Why isn’t Waylon picking up? It’s only noon.”

Today, Andrew and a few friends decided to have a gathering, and the task of calling Waylon had been assigned to Andrew. Since he was driving, Isabella took over, but Waylon wasn’t answering.

“Maybe he’s busy.” Andrew glanced at Isabella as the car stopped at a red light.

“Anyway, you’ve notified him. If he doesn’t show up, he’ll just have to wait until next time.”

Isabella set her phone down as Andrew drove them to a private club. At the top floor of the club, Andrew’s friends saw it was just the two of them and asked, “Where is Waylon?”

“Can’t reach him,” Andrew replied flatly.

“Oh, that’s a shame. I just got something new.”

The man who spoke clapped his hands, and a black cloth slowly lifted in a hidden area of the top floor, revealing what lay beneath. Isabella’s eyes instantly lit up. It was a top-of-the-line shooting game setup.

“This is the latest model I imported from overseas. I’ve already tested it out. You’ve got to try it!”

The group immediately jumped in to test it out. Andrew, noticing the spark of excitement in Isabella’s eyes, leaned in and asked, “Want to give it a go?”

Before she could respond, Andrew’s friends teased her.

“Isabella, Andrew’s an excellent marksman! If you’re not great at it, he can teach you. He’s better than any instructor you could hire!”

Isabella had never shared her shooting skills in front of Andrew, and she didn’t know how “excellent” he really was.

Isabella glanced at Andrew, a playful smile tugging at her lips.

“They say you’re excellent. I wonder if I’ll get the honor of seeing it for myself?”
