The agent’s eyes widened in surprise as he looked at Waylon.

As soon as Waylon began with “I have a friend,” the agent’s curiosity was piqued. If he wanted advice about relationships, he could’ve just asked directly. Why use the classic “friend” excuse?

Recognizing Waylon’s pride, the agent chose not to call him out. Instead, he considered the question seriously.

As someone with experience, the agent quickly pieced things together.

“It’s easy for your ‘friend’ to figure out what to do, but first, he needs to clarify a couple of things.”

“What things?” Waylon asked, leaning in.

“First, does your friend truly want to take responsibility, or is he just doing it out of guilt?”

“Isn’t that obvious? Of course, he genuinely wants to take responsibility!”

“Why are you getting so defensive? How can you be so sure about what your friend is really feeling?” The agent gave Waylon a knowing look.

Waylon opened his mouth to reply but closed it again, unable to argue. The agent continued, “Secondly, your friend needs to figure out if the girl truly doesn’t want him to take responsibility, or if she’s saying that for some other reason. Once he answers these two questions, the path forward will be clear.”

Waylon listened intently, his expression thoughtful. Sensing that his words had struck a chord, the agent gave Waylon a reassuring pat on the shoulder before turning to leave.

Left alone, Waylon stood still, his mind spinning with the questions his agent had posed.

Did he genuinely want to take responsibility? Or was it just his sense of morality pushing him to do so?

Waylon realized he couldn’t give an immediate answer. But as he mulled over the question, images of Evie filled his mind—her every frown, every smile, her quiet moments, and her guarded demeanor. This wasn’t like anything he’d felt before. For the first time, he felt the urge to treasure someone, to protect her. His heart told him he couldn’t walk away from his responsibility.

And then, the second question. Why didn’t Evie want him to take responsibility? Was it their age difference, their social status, their personalities? Or did she simply not have feelings for him? Or… did she already have someone in her heart? Waylon quickly dismissed the last possibility. Evie was still single. If she had feelings for someone else, he wouldn’t have been involved in the first place.

In Waylon’s eyes, as long as both people had mutual feelings, any obstacle could be overcome. If Evie didn’t have feelings for him now, he could start building that connection.

Having sorted through his thoughts, Waylon finally felt like he had a direction. The cloud of uncertainty lifted, and his usual confident demeanor returned with renewed vigor.

Waylon walked into the changing room, carefully straightening himself. Once he was ready, he grabbed his car keys, his mind set on finding Evie and figuring out what was really going on in her head.

As Evie stepped out of her villa, she froze at the sight of him standing by the door.

Her agent, walking just behind her, also spotted Waylon. His striking appearance was impossible to ignore, and immediately, her agent recognized him.

“Oh, it’s you. You were the one who was drunk last time, and Evie and I helped you into the car. You’re here to see Evie, right? Well, you two go ahead and chat.”

The agent stepped aside to give them privacy.

Evie bit her lip, her eyes narrowing with an unmistakable hint of discomfort.

“Waylon, I have to go to work.”

Waylon could sense her resistance, and the pressure mounted on him. He softened his tone, speaking with genuine regret.

“I’m sorry, Evie. I promise I won’t take up too much of your time. I just need to say a few things.”

Evie stood there in silence, her posture stiff.

Waylon took a deep breath before continuing, “After that day, I tried to forget, like you said. But the more I tried, the more I couldn’t. It became clearer with every passing day. Evie, my feelings for you have changed. It’s no longer just brotherly affection—it’s something deeper, something more. I need to give myself the chance to tell you how I feel, and I hope you can share your feelings with me too.”

As he finished speaking, Waylon’s gaze was fixed on Evie, intense and sincere.

Evie turned her face away, unwilling to meet his eyes.

She spoke softly, but there was an edge to her words.

“Waylon, to me, that was just an accident. You feel like you need to take responsibility, but does that mean I’m supposed to let you? I don’t need that. As for your feelings for me, you’ve never been in a relationship before, but I have. When I like someone, I want to be with them, to build a life together. These things come naturally, not like what happened between us. You’ll meet the right person one day…”

“There won’t be another right person!” Waylon interjected, his voice firm, his gaze unwavering.

“I may have never been in a relationship, but I know how I feel. And about that night—it was also your first time. If you hated me, you wouldn’t have…”

Evie’s voice cut through the air, sharp and direct as she finally faced Waylon. Her eyes locked with his.

“I admit I was moved that day. But as adults, we both have needs. It was a mutual exchange, nothing more. If I found someone else who was attractive, I might have done the same.”

“What…?” Waylon stood there, stunned, his mind racing at her blunt words.

Evie didn’t offer any more explanation. Without another glance, she turned and walked toward her agent.

Waylon watched her leave, his gaze following her retreating form, still shocked. He couldn’t believe how easily she had dismissed everything they had shared. Yet, the thought gnawed at him—if what she said was true and she could be with anyone, why couldn’t she be with him? His mind raced, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Evie’s words. Perhaps he wasn’t steady enough for her, but he was determined to prove, through his actions, that his feelings and his desire to take responsibility were not empty words.

Later, back at work, Waylon streamlined his tasks for the following days, focusing only on what was essential. He grabbed a pen and a notebook, scribbling down everything he could think of about Evie.

That evening, while Isabella and Andrew were in the study, Waylon’s video call came through.

“Waylon?” Isabella answered, a hint of surprise in her voice.

“Is Andrew there with you?” Waylon asked.

“Yeah, what’s up?” Isabella handed the phone to Andrew, and the two of them stared at Waylon’s face on the screen.

Waylon, his voice serious, asked, “You two are the closest to Evie, right? Do you know what she particularly likes, or what she enjoys doing?”

Isabella knew Evie well, but her curiosity got the better of her.

“Why the sudden interest in what Evie likes?”

Waylon hesitated but then explained vaguely, “I did something to upset her, and now I’m trying to make it right. I’ve thought of a few things, but I’m worried I might have missed something. I figured I’d ask you.”

Having seen how Waylon and Evie usually interacted, Isabella wasn’t shocked by his admission, and neither was Andrew.

They both shared what they knew. Then, Isabella said, “We’ve told you everything we know. Evie’s innocent and charming. If you show her your sincerity, I’m sure she’ll forgive you. But please, from now on, don’t pick on her. Even if you’re joking, respect her boundaries. Girls are different from boys—they’re sensitive.”

“Okay, I understand.”

Waylon felt a pang of guilt. After hanging up the phone, he leaned back in his chair, staring at the “pursuit plan” spread across his desk. It was a mixture of neatly written notes, sketches, and bullet points, meticulously planned down to the smallest detail. He intended to start putting it into action the following day.

In her study, Isabella pursed her lips, deep in thought.

“I wonder what Waylon did. But hopefully, he learns from his mistakes this time.”

Andrew took Isabella’s hand and gently pulled her to sit beside him. He spoke comfortingly, “Waylon is your brother, but he’s an adult now. He should know what he’s doing. Stop worrying about him, okay? You’ve been staring at your investments for over an hour. Aren’t you tired?”

Isabella shook her head.

“I’m fine.”

She didn’t feel tired at all. As she spoke, she picked up her laptop, nestled closer to Andrew, and turned the screen toward him. Her eyes gleamed with excitement as she showed him her achievements for the day.

“My ranking has reached fifteen. Next, I’m planning to…”

Isabella was about to tell Andrew her plans for the next phase when a window suddenly flashed on the screen.

“Oh, is it a new message?”

She paused, turned her attention to the screen, and clicked on the window, thinking it was a message from one of her partners. But to her surprise, it was a friend request.

“Lilian?” Isabella exclaimed in surprise. She accepted the request, eager to see why this rising star in the investment world suddenly wanted to connect with her. Initially, Isabella had felt some appreciation and expectations toward Lilian. However, one sentence from Lilian instantly changed her view, transforming Lilian from someone she wanted to connect with into a rival she had to overcome.

Lilian’s message read, “Mr. J, I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to call you that. Actually, I’ve been following you for a while now. Your success in leveraging limited resources to build your current portfolio is incredibly impressive. However, you must still be a student, right? It’s a pity that only the top ten on the NCI list are of real value. I’m afraid the valuation of the shares in your hands won’t exceed those ahead of you. So, I have a proposal that you might consider. I hope you’ll find time to look into it. I look forward to your reply.”

Isabella skimmed through Lilian’s polite words for a while before clicking on the draft contract Lilian had sent.
