I smiled. “And you’re not sleeping in it.”
Zane smirked. “I think you want me to.”
“No, I assure you that I don’t.”
He rolled his eyes. “Like I said, you’re no fun.” He kicked off the blanket and climbed out, crossing his arms. “Where do I sleep?”
“You and I both know that you won’t.”
He frowned. “Said who?”
I narrowed my eyes. “There is a group of psychos who want to murder me, and I have a poisoned wound on my arm. There is no way in hell th you’re gonna be sleeping. There’s a reason you came here with me.”
“Fine. But you don’t expect me to stay guard standing all night, do you?”
“Of course not. There’s the couch. You’ll find it’s very comfortable.” I pointed at it.
“And I find you very ungrateful and thankless for making me sit there instead of the much more comfortable bed.”
I clicked my tongue. “People are so unfair at times, aren’t they?”
Zane grumbled and plopped down on the couch, looking at me with distaste. “The least you could do is change in front of me.”
“I
“Yeah, right.” I went into the washroom and locked the door, before a stupid smile made its way onto my lips. It didn’t even make sense. He was being so annoying, and yet, I found it adorable.
“Don’t stay in there too long if you want your bed empty when you come out, love.”
“Don’t shout if you don’t want my parents to drag you out by the hair,” I called.
Silence followed.
I smiled in victory.
I took off his jacket and then my dress, examining myself in the mirror. The bandages were stained with my blood. I had to change them. Thankfully, I had a roll of fresh ones in my washroom cabinet. I took it out, and then struggled to untie the dirty bandages from my arm. A groan left my lips when my arm hurt, and immediately, there was a knock on my door.
“Lia? You alright?”
“Yeah,” I said, taking a deep breath. “I’m just changing my bandages. They’re dirty. I didn’t think to ask Emerald for new ones before we left your… pack house or whatever.”
“Open the door,” Zane said.
“No, I can’t. I’m in my underwear.”
“Lia, don’t be a baby. Open the door.”
“Zane, I cannot. Like I said, I’m not dressed.”
“You want me to break the door down?’
I groaned. “Fine!” I unlocked the door, ready to yell at him, but the second his eyes travelled down my body, my anger melted away. A searing heat crept up my neck and face.
“Wow,” Zane whispered, his eyebrows shooting up. “You have a beautiful body, Lia. What other secrets are you hiding behind your nerdy, studious facade?”
“I… I-I look like what every girl looks like. You-you’re just inexperienced.”
“You really can’t take a compliment, can you?” He stepped inside the washroom, making me gasp
“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked.
“Coming in,” he frowned, closing the door behind him. He also locked it for some reason, and I backed away from him.
“Zane, if this is your dark urges taking over, I cannot contact The Order right now. I don’t have my phone, remember?”
Zane smirked, and his eyes went black. “Why else do you think I convinced you to let me stay the night?”
My heart hammered in my chest, and I stared at him with disbelief. “Zane… you-you can’t do this.”
He took a step closer to me, and I took one back, my body starting to shiver. “I won’t hurt you, Lia.”
“Stay-stay away from me.” The back of my knees touched the cool toilet. “Zane,” I cried, “please, what are you doing?”
He closed the distance between us, and gently took my chin. I looked into his black eyes, that were completely void of humanity. Then the darkness started to swirl around and lighten up, filling with white and blue. He blinked, and his eyes were back to normal. “Checking how little you still trust me,” he said.
Relief flooded me. I punched his arm with my good hand.
“Ow,” he scowled.
“You’re a huge jerk, Zane Adams.”
“And you’re my little scaredy cat. Sit down,” he ordered. “Let me take care of you.”
“No,” I stated. “Apologise to me first.”
“For what?” He scoffed.
“For what you just pulled.”
Zane smiled. “You’re serious?”
“Yes,” I snapped. “You can’t just scare me into submission whenever you want, Zane. If you want me to trust you completely, stop pulling these pranks on me.”
His smile faded. “Okay, okay.” He raised his hands in surrender. “Last time. I promise. I’m sorry.
I huffed.
“Sit down now, please.” He chuckled, finding my annoyance. very funny for some reason.
I obliged his request, sinking down to the toilet seat.
Zane knelt on the ground before me, then held onto his ears. “I’m sorry, Lia. Please forgive me?”
And just like that, all my anger vanished within a second, replaced by a warm and giddy feeling in my chest.
Tonight was going to be much longer than I’d thought.
-LIA’S POV-
“It’s alright,” I said, suppressing the smile begging to spread on my lips.
“Thank you,” he said, before moving to my side to examine my arm.
He found the knot Emerald had tied and attempted to undo it, but gave up when it didn’t immediately budge. He then grew the nail of his index finger into a claw, and used it to make a clean cut through the bandage. Then, he easily unwrapped it from my arm, his fingers occasionally brushing my skin in the process.
There was an unspoken silence in the air as Zane freed my wound from the dirty bandages, placing them aside on the floor. He stared at the claw marks, which were surprisingly much much more healed than one would expect. I thought he would say something, but he seemed unfazed by the miraculous healing of the gashes. He grabbed the first aid kit from the sink and wet a ball of cotton. Wordlessly, Zane began to clean the blood off my arm, staying away from the cuts, his movements precise.
I stared at the way his brows furrowed slightly whenever he had to clean too close to the cuts. The way he sucked in his lower lip when a stain of blood required more effort than others. Every time I flinched, his blue eyes would shoot to mine, all his actions stopping instantly. He wouldn’t resume until I gave him a nod, and until then, he’d gently blow on the cuts to help with the stinging.
I watched Zane as he tied the now bandages around my arm, slow and cautions, firmly, yet without hurting me. The tingles that shot through my son when we touched helped forget any bit of pain I falt, also proceeding to numb my brain to anything other than desire.
The desire to kiss him again. The desire to have those sparla shooting up every part of my body. The desire to be wrapped up in him completely, every inch of his skin pressed against mina.
He tied the knot, and he was done, But his fingers lingered on my arm for a good moment before withdrawal.
“There,” he said, “all done.”
I reached out with my other hand, and traced my fingers down his cheek. Zane’s eyes fluttered close, and be leaned into the touch, dased.
Thank you,” I said softly, my gas dropping to his lips over and over. I tore my eyes away from him, looking to the side. But I didn’t have it in me to withdraw my hand yet.
As if hearing my thoughts, he quickly caught hold of my wrist, pressing my hand tighter against his face.
My heart gave a thump in my chest, and then I heard a thump of another.
I glanced at him, my mouth parting in surprise. I’d heard his heartbeat again. I was certain of it.
Now that I focused on it, I realised I could hear every single one of them. The rhythmic, yet quick beats of his heart.
I placed my other hand against his chest, my brows furrowing slightly.
Zane opened his eyes and glanced down at my hand, then at me.
“It beats only for you, Lia,” he said softly. “There is no other reason.”
I leaned forward now, not able to hold back.
