Cole leaned over me again, pulling my head up to look at him. He was frowning, his eyes clouded with confusion and something like concern. “Can you understand me?”

I didn’t know how to respond, but I managed to wag my tail enough that it flopped against the mattress with a faint thump. Such a bizarre feeling.

His gaze softened slightly, and he stroked the fur down over my forehead. “You’ll be fine.”

I sighed. Even the weight of my fur and the contact with Cole’s hand, though light, throbbed like fire in my body.

I still didn’t understand what was going on, but I nodded my head once more and closed my eyes. Even though I could feel him cleaning the wound in my side, I kept drifting in and out of consciousness. It only seemed like I had shut my eyes for a minute before I heard the door shut again.”Took you long enough,” Cole muttered.”I broke every speed limit on my way back,” Marcus shot back. “How is she?””Out of it. I think she’s stuck like that.””Can that happen?””If the injury or trauma is severe enough, yeah,” he said pointedly. “The poison probably isn’t helping.””Here,” Marcus said, looking down at me in a mixture of concern and guilt before he handed Cole a black rectangular box. “I got the antidote.”

They were silent for a moment, Cole presumably working on my wound again, and Marcus watching over both of us.”Hold her,” Cole told him. “This isn’t going to feel good.”

That made me alert enough, but as Cole passed me into Marcus’ arms, I couldn’t muster anything resembling a defense.”Shh,” Marcus soothed, stroking my fur. “It’s okay. This will help.”

Even if he had brought me here, I was still driven enough by instinct that I didn’t trust his motives. Straining away did nothing, though, and when I felt Cole’s hands on my throat, I couldn’t stop the growl building in my chest.

He glanced warily at me, but he still moved the fur away from my jugular. I snarled as I felt a sharp pinch in my neck, but it was nothing compared to the fire when he injected me with the antidote.

Even though the logical part of me knew he was only trying to help, that was definitely not the part in control right now. I thrashed against him, and he had to press down on my shoulders to keep me from breaking free of his grip.”Could you try to hold her still?” Cole growled.”I don’t want to hurt her,” Marcus protested, holding me a bit tighter. It was enough to drain what little energy the surge of adrenaline had given me.”There,” Cole said, withdrawing the needle. I didn’t even feel it, though, in comparison to the antidote.

My growls died down to a high-pitched groan, and I collapsed against Marcus. Eventually, the pain ebbed away, and I was left panting, half-attending to their conversation.”Will she be okay?” Marcus pressed.”The antidote seems to be working, so yeah,” Cole said, sounding less than convinced. “As long as you can manage not to poison her again.””I told you, it–“”Accident, yeah, I know,” he scoffed. “How the hell did this even happen?”

Marcus shook his head, still absently stroking my fur. “I was out on a hunt and I got a call some…thing was on the loose in a residential area. I had no idea it was her. I mean, she’s not supposed to be able to shift, let alone into…that.”

I managed another growl.

Cole laughed. “Well, she’s with it enough to be pissed at you, so that’s a good sign.”

Marcus rolled his eyes, studying me closer. “Can you understand what I’m saying?”

I chuffed in response.”And you can’t shift back?”

I blinked, hoping that would be a clear no.

He looked at Cole. “Any ideas?””She’s been through a lot. She just needs rest. There are things we can try if she’s still like this tomorrow morning.”

Marcus rubbed the back of his head. “I’m not sure taking her back to my place is a good idea in her current condition.””She can stay,” Cole said, rolling his eyes at whatever face Marcus was making. “Fine. You can both stay, butyou’resleeping on the couch.””Thanks,” Marcus said quietly.

They started talking about something else, but I was too tired to stay awake long enough to pay attention. I wasn’t sure if it was the serum making me drowsy or simply the exhaustion, but all I could do was hope they were right and in the morning, I’d be back to normal.

Then, I was going to get some answers.
