“Of course, you can.”
Isabella reached out, gently ruffling Evie’s hair. The little girl was just too endearing.
Evie’s face lit up at the response, and she turned to Andrew, teasing, “I knew Isabella would let me go. You’re way too cautious, brother.
Isabella’s much better than you.
Isabella, sit with me.”
Evie scooted over, making room for Isabella.
Andrew shot a flat look at his sister.
“If you don’t quiet down, I’ll have to ask you to get out.”
Evie immediately fell silent, her expression showing dissatisfaction, though she shot Isabella a playful, pitiful look.
Isabella tugged at Andrew’s sleeve, saying, “Why are you scaring her like that?”
Andrew opened the front passenger door for Isabella and helped her buckle up, saying, “She isn’t easily scared. As my fianc?e, of course, you should sit next to me.”
Once Isabella was settled, Andrew glanced at the back seat, and Evie immediately stopped making faces, becoming well-behaved.
“Brother, look at your fianc?e, not me.” Evie waved a hand, trying to divert attention.
Isabella couldn’t help but laugh as she looked at Evie’s cute appearance. She turned to Andrew and said, “Okay, let’s go.” As soon as the car pulled over at the Patton Manor’s courtyard, Evie quickly got out and skipped over to the front passenger door. With a bright smile, she opened it for Isabella before Andrew had a chance to do the same.
“Isabella, your new manor is so beautiful! The inside must be even more gorgeous. Come, I’ll go in with you,” Evie said excitedly.
It was her first time coming to the new Patton Manor, and Isabella couldn’t help but smile warmly at her excitement. She took Isabella’s arm and pulled her inside, leaving Andrew behind to carry the gifts from the trunk.
They went straight to the sunroom, where the warm golden light streaming through the glass walls cast a serene glow over the space. Evie’s eyes lit up at the sight of Elaine. She greeted Elaine happily and politely.
“Mrs. Patton, sorry for the intrusion. I hope I am not disturbing you.”
“Hey, what are you talking about? How can you be disturbing us?” Elaine said with a smile. She took Evie’s hand and added, “I’ve seen you grow up, and I already treat you as one of my children. You are not an outsider. Besides, the more the merrier, right?”
They sat in the sunroom and chatted for a while. Soon, the rest of the Patton family members returned one after another.
Waylon was the last to arrive home. As soon as he entered the house, he paused at the sight of a pretty, vibrant young woman huddled beside his younger sister.
His teasing eyes narrowed, and the corners of his lips curved into a smile. He approached Evie with long strides and looked at her carefully. He exclaimed in feigned surprise, “Huh? Isn’t this little Evie? Wow, you’ve changed a lot! I almost didn’t recognize you. You look so different now.”
After saying this, Waylon looked at Elaine and said, “Mom, do you remember? When she was a little girl, she always followed Andrew and me around, like a little monkey.”
“You…”
Waylon’s description was so vivid that Isabella and the others couldn’t help but laugh. Evie could no longer maintain her docile facade. She glared at Waylon fiercely with a flushed face.
However, her reaction only urged Waylon to tease her even more.
“Why? Did I say something wrong? We’ve all watched you grow up. You don’t need to put on a show for us, okay?”
Waylon’s words provoked Evie even more. She was so angry that she stood up and grabbed a throw pillow.
“Fine! Since you said I didn’t have to put on a show, I’ll let it all out.” As soon as she said this, Evie began hitting Waylon with the throw pillow. Her hits weren’t hard, and the pillow was soft, but it looked intense. Waylon dodged each hit, still teasing her.
While watching this scene, Elaine was instantly reminded of when her children were little. She didn’t stop them. Instead, she moved aside to make room for their playful fight, laughing heartily.
Of course, Waylon was unharmed. He looked at Evie’s angry expression and let her chase him. When she couldn’t keep up, he slowed down. Then, he would speed up again when she almost caught him.
After a while, Evie stopped mid-chase, realizing that Waylon had been teasing her all along. With a determined glare, she hurled the throw pillow at him, and it smacked him squarely in the chest. Then, she turned to Elaine and Isabella, who were watching the scene unfold with thinly veiled amusement.
“Mrs. Patton, Isabella, look at Waylon! He’s so grown up, but he’s still bullying me.”
Elaine and Isabella suppressed their smiles, but they were clearly amused.
Isabella wrapped her arm around Evie’s shoulders, pulling her close. Elaine, on the other hand, leaned in and said comfortingly, “Alright, Evie, let’s ignore that childish man.”
“That’s right! Humph! He is too childish,” Evie said through clenched teeth.
Isabella covered her mouth with her hand, trying to stifle her laughter as she watched Evie’s exaggerated pout and Waylon’s smug grin. The two bickered like siblings who hadn’t grown up, their playful antics filling the sunroom with an infectious energy.
When Waylon met Isabella’s gaze, he suddenly realized he was not acting like an older brother. He quickly tried to make amends by picking up a piece of mango with a fork and offering it to Evie. He said gently, “Little Evie, it was my fault. I’m sorry, okay? Please don’t be mad at me anymore. You love mangoes, right? Here, have a bite.”
“What? How could someone use a bite-size piece of mango as an apology?” Evie snorted coldly, curling her lips. But she immediately ate the mango. All the anger in her eyes turned into satisfaction after she tasted her favorite fruit.
“For the mango’s sake, I will forgive you this time. But if I ever hear you call me monkey again, don’t blame me for being harsh.”
“I swear I will never call you that again. Thank you for letting this slide.”
Evie.
Waylon and Evie reconciled quickly after their little scuffle. As the tension dissolved, the warm and inviting sunroom of the Patton family was instantly filled with harmony.
But happy moments always passed quickly. After dinner, Evie said goodbye to the members of the Patton family and got in the car. However, she was reluctant to leave.
Her grandfather lived in the old mansion, and her brother had moved in with his fianc?e. She was on her own. Although she was often away for work, she felt so alone every time she returned to the empty house.
The reluctance in Evie’s expression didn’t escape Waylon’s sharp eyes. He put his hands in his pockets, leaned against the doorframe, and looked at her, raising an eyebrow.
“Little Evie, do you want to stay the night? You used to stay at our house often when you were little, anyway.”
Since the Patton family and the Klein family were long-time friends and would be in-laws soon, Elaine didn’t see a problem in letting Evie stay. She even invited Evie to stay not just for tonight, but for a few days.
Evie shook her head, a warm smile lighting up her face.
“Thanks, Mrs. Patton and Waylon. I’ve had an amazing time today. I’ve got work coming up in the next few days, but don’t worry, I’ll definitely be at Howard and Milly’s engagement party!”
She glanced over at Milly and Howard, who had been open about their relationship for quite some time now. Howard had shared at dinner that they were planning to get engaged, and before long, the date was set.
Howard flashed a kind smile at Evie.
“Come by whenever you have time. This place is always open to you.”
Howard then turned to Isabella and Andrew.
“Isabella, Andrew, be careful on the road. Let us know when you get home.”
“We will.”
One day, Isabella, unusually, didn’t head to the office.
Instead, she relaxed on a sun lounger on the rooftop terrace, laptop open, her fingers flying over the keyboard.
Over in Ytrovia, at a renowned private research institution, a new investment simulation software had recently been launched.
The software, “NCI (No Capital Investment),” challenged participants to start with zero funds and accumulate capital over three months. The entire environment was designed to mimic real-world investing, and after the three months, rankings would be determined based on the wealth amassed.
With the research institution’s prestigious global reputation, many industry leaders and influential figures had graduated from it. As a result, the competition wasn’t just open to students but to top talents worldwide.
Once the news was out, many people jumped at the opportunity.
Isabella, with her keen interest in investment and a track record of success, found herself equally intrigued when she caught wind of it. Her laptop screen was filled with application materials to review, which she uploaded one by one.
As she waited for the review to finish, she gazed out at the large green space outside the villa, feeling a rare sense of peace and contentment. The review process was efficient. Soon, Isabella entered the software interface, typed in her exclusive code, and set her nickname to “J.” With just a few days left before the registration deadline for “NCI,” she exited the interface and opened the new quarterly plan for Homelight Enterprise that Jared had sent her. She flipped through the pages.
Isabella had invested her first batch of savings into Homelight Enterprise when she was still in school. Back then, she didn’t have the time to manage the company, so she turned to Jared for help. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that, all these years later, Homelight Enterprise would grow into the powerhouse it had become. Handling company matters kept her busy, and before long, the sun was beginning to set. The hum of a car engine outside the villa caught her attention.
