“Thank you,” he said. “Sorry, didn’t mean to snap.”
“It’s okay,” I whispered. “Just so you know, I do feel those tingles when our skins make contact. With Blake, I mean.”
Zane kept his gaze on the road, silent for a moment. “If you’re sure that you do, then yeah, he probably is your mate. But still. not a very trustworthy one.”
“Doesn’t being a good lover come naturally to you guys?” I frowned.
“Usually, yes. But for Blake and I, the situation is a bit twisted. I don’t know what effect it might have on his wolf. I too have had some dark urges for you, Lia. There is at you, Lia. There is a reason I have shown. up to your bedroom at night so many times. I never hurt you, I never tried to do anything, because the moment I lay my eyes on you, I am filled with a sense of peace. As long as you’re in front of me, alive and well, your presence alone relaxes me.”
–
I blinked, fear circling my heart. “What kind of dark urges do you mean?” I whispered.
Zane bit his lip, keeping his gaze on the road.
“Zane,” I said, “what kind of dark urges?”
“Nothing I would ever actually do, Lia.”
“Answer the question.”
“The urge to mark you. Or to turn you. To take you to my pack house and force you into submission. Force you to give in to me, to the bond between us. To have you whether you like it or not. It terrified me, that the thought even crossed my mind. So I hurried and came to see you, because I knew that the second. I look at you, the second I breathe in your scent, all negative thoughts would melt away.”
I swallowed, my heart hammering in my chest. The car didn’t feel so safe now. “And if they didn’t?” I whispered.
“Then I have enough control over myself that I would go far, far away from you. Somewhere I couldn’t return to hurt you. from even if I wanted.” Zane parked the car behind my house, and turned to me fully, taking my hand in his. “I would rip my own heart out before letting myself do anything to hurt you, Lia Snow. But I cannot say the same for Blake-and that’s what I’m worried about.”
-LIA’S POV-
I didn’t know what to feel after what he said.
Zane noted the look on my face. “I’m sorry if I frightened you.”
“A little,” I admitted.
“I won’t ever hurt you, I promise. And if in any situation you feel threatened by me, please send The Order a text. They will come flying.”
“And help you kill me?” I smiled sarcastically.
Zane chuckled. “No, they’d deal with me first. You could run away until then.”
“Yeah, what a foolproof plan.”
Zane reached out to my face, and gently cupped my cheek, tracing his thumb across it. Sparks filled my skin. “I love you, Lia Snow.” He took my hand with his free one and planted a lingering kiss on it. My stomach exploded with butterflies at the gesture.
“It’s getting late,” I whispered. “We should go up.”
“Yeah,” he said. “I just seem to lose track of time when I’m with you. It’s your fault.”
“My fault?”
“You’re too beautiful. It’s distracting.”
I rolled my eyes, but couldn’t keep the smile from my face. “I have to go.”
“Don’t let me stop you.” He grinned.
“Let go,” I laughed, glancing at our connected hands.
He waited a short moment, then let go. “Thank you,” I said, turning to get out of the car.
“Wait,” he said. He climbed out first, then opened the door to the back seat and fished something from there. I wanted to turn to look, but trying to do so made my arm hurt, so I kept looking in the front.
“What are you doing?” I asked, but he didn’t reply. Zane then opened the door of my seat for me, and offered me his hand. I took it and stepped out of the car, after which he shut the door.
“Here, wear this,” he said, extending a jacket towards me. “Your dress is stained and torn. Your parents will get worried.”
My heart turned to mush in my chest. “I completely forgot about. that,” I said, gaping at my stupidity. “Thank you, Zane.”
“I got you, love,” he said softly. He opened the jacket up for me, and I carefully put my arms in, wincing when I slid in my injured arm. “Careful,” he said. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” I reassured.
He then zipped the jacket for me.
“Perfect,” he said, taking in my look. He also checked the back to make sure no torn part of the dress was still showing somehow. “Yeah, you’re good.”
I smiled. “Your jacket is almost reaching my knees.”
“Because you’re a short queen.”
I grinned. “Thanks. You could’ve called me a midget or a dwarf but you didn’t.”
“You just defeated the purpose by saying that. Anyway, go on in. It’s not safe to be standing here like this. I’m watching you, go.”
For an inexplicable reason, I felt the urge to kiss him before walking away. But I held back with everything I had and quickly turned away from him, taking in a deep breath. I walked around the side of the house and approached the door, ringing the bell.
Almost immediately, my mom answered it.
“Lia!” she exclaimed. “Where were you? We have been worried sick!” She ushered me inside the house and closed the door, glaring at me. “If you have been doing what I think you’ve been-“
“No, Mom,” I cried, scrunching up my nose. “We were just spending time. Talking, running around, a bit of… kissing. Nothing else.”
“Are you sure? Is that his jacket you’re wearing?”
“Yes,” I replied.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Because I fell asleep at his house.”
Mom scowled. “You were at his house? Why?”
“Because my phone died. It wouldn’t work. I tried to charge it, but it wouldn’t switch on. We were near his house so we decided to try a different charger. Then once we were there, we realised the issue was in the phone. I actually dropped it really hard and it broke. Blake has it, he said he’ll get it repaired for me.”
“Lia, you’re not making any sense,” Mom said, glaring.
“Of course, I’m not,” I laughed. “I had my first kiss, Mom.”
“I will be able to rejoice about that once I know what you were doing for the last seven hours.”
I sighed. “We went to an amusement park, actually. I insisted. on recording on the ride, and my phone slipped from my hands. The screen broke and it wouldn’t switch on. I thought, maybe if I charge it, it will somehow resurrect. So we went to his house to do that. Then I fell asleep there.”
“Are you sure you only slept?”
“Yes, Mom. I wouldn’t lose my virginity on the first date.”
“Or tenth,” she stated.
“Or tenth,” I nodded. “Then when I woke up, it was really late and my phone was still dead. So Blake said he’ll get it repaired for me. We went to a restaurant, got some dinner, and then he dropped me home. That’s it.”
Mom looked convinced now. “Alright. That makes sense.”
“Thank the Lord. Now if you don’t mind, may I go get some sleep? I am exhausted and I have a test tomorrow.”
“Yes, alright.”
“Thank you.”
I made my way to the staircase, but before I could even start climbing, Mom called out my name.
I froze, bracing myself. Had she caught me? Was there a blood stain somewhere?
“Yeah?”
“Congratulations on your first kiss.” Mom grinned. “I wanna hear everything tomorrow.”
I smiled, heat rising to my cheeks as Zane’s face flashed before my eyes. “Sure. Good night, Mom.”
“Good night.”
I climbed up the stairs as fast as I could, and made my way to my bedroom. As expected, Zane was already in there, lounging on my bed, his hands laced under his head. I closed the door and locked it.
-LIA’S POV-
“Hi, Lia. Turns out there’s only one bed.”
