At home, after washing her hands, Isabella wandered into the kitchen, looking to help Andrew with dinner preparations.
Andrew, determined to keep her from working more, turned to her with a smile.
“Give me your hand.”
Isabella extended one hand, curious.
“The other one too,” he added.
Bemused but compliant, Isabella offered both hands. Andrew turned, retrieved a fruit bowl and an opened yogurt container from the counter, and placed them in her palms.
“Now, take these two things and head to the sofa. Go,” Andrew playfully commanded.
Isabella glanced down at her hands, then back at him, her heart melting at his thoughtful gesture. Rising on tiptoe, she pressed a soft kiss to his lips.
“Yes, sir! Right away!” she replied with a mischievous wink before leaving the kitchen.
The warmth of her kiss lingered as Andrew watched her go, a smile playing on his lips.
The next morning, Isabella rose early. Over breakfast, still feeling guilty about making Andrew wait yesterday, she announced, “I’ll drive myself to the office today—no need to pick me up after work.” As she spoke, Isabella had already snatched up the keys. Andrew wanted to protest, but the words caught in his throat.
“Okay, but if anything happens, contact me anytime, got it?” Andrew ruffled Isabella’s hair with gentle affection.
Isabella bobbed her head twice in quick succession. “I know.”
The Klein Group and Patton Group were located in opposite directions, so the couple parted ways at the crossroads with a final wave goodbye.
Upon reaching the office, Isabella snapped into work mode. She promptly finished the previous night’s documents and sent them out. By afternoon, she had launched the first phase of her improvement plan.
In Isabella’s mind, once an improvement plan was set in motion, it demanded immediate execution—there wasn’t a moment to waste.
This drive led her to work extended hours for several days straight. For efficiency’s sake, she even declined Andrew’s lunch invitations, choosing instead to eat at the company cafeteria.
At Klein Group’s CEO office, Malachi Robles, Andrew’s secretary, noticed Andrew’s demeanor growing increasingly frosty with each passing day. Gone were his requests to reserve restaurants for lunch with Isabella, and he no longer made his usual trips to Patton Group to pick her up after work.
Employees from various departments observed Andrew reverting to his characteristically decisive and forceful management style during meetings. After one such meeting, several department heads lingered behind to corner Malachi.
“What happened to Mr. Klein? Did he and Miss Patton have a fight? He doesn’t even glance at his phone during meetings anymore.”
Malachi sensed something was amiss between Andrew and Isabella, but Andrew didn’t act like he had had a fight with Isabella. Something else was brewing beneath the surface.
Meeting the concerned gazes of his colleagues, Malachi offered diplomatically, “I’m not certain either, but focusing on work at a time like this is certainly the right approach. Let’s all maintain this momentum!”
Following Andrew into the office afterward, Malachi found his boss sitting at his desk, lost in thought.
He had to look twice—the files before Andrew remained unopened, his eyes fixed on their covers without actually seeing them. It was unlike Andrew to waste time staring at file folders.
After a moment’s hesitation, Malachi ventured carefully, “Mr. Klein, are you feeling unwell?”
Andrew lifted his gaze to meet Malachi’s. “Have you found yourself a girlfriend this year?” Malachi was speechless.
That was quite an abrupt change of subject, he thought.
Despite his internal protest, Malachi responded earnestly, “Mr. Klein, have you perhaps had a misunderstanding with Miss Patton? Though I’m single myself, I do understand a thing or two about relationships. Feel free to confide in me—I might be able to offer some perspective.”
Andrew met Malachi’s sincere gaze and intertwined his fingers as he slowly spoke. “There’s a slight issue.”
Malachi looked at him intently. “I’d like to hear more about it.”
Andrew sighed. “I haven’t done anything wrong, and neither has she, but it feels like the relationship between us isn’t the same as it was.”
Malachi’s eyes widened in surprise. “Mr. Klein, why do you think so? I thought you and Miss Patton were deeply in love.”
Andrew paused before continuing, the words easier to say now that he had started. “My feelings for her haven’t changed. In fact, as we spend more time together, I find myself loving her even more. But when we share meals, go jogging, or relax together… it all just feels different.”
His tone grew heavier, and he turned to Malachi. “Do you know why?”
Malachi took a moment to reflect and understood the situation soon. It was simple: Andrew hadn’t adjusted to the fact that the passion had faded.
Malachi was surprised. He hadn’t expected Andrew, so caught up in love, to go through such a phase with Isabella.
Their passionate romance had lasted for years, and Malachi had always thought a lull like this would never come for Andrew.
Andrew glanced at Malachi, and Malachi quickly responded, “Mr. Klein, do you know what stages couples typically go through in a relationship?”
“What stages?” Andrew asked, genuinely unsure.
Malachi cleared his throat and explained. “Generally, couples go through a getting-to-know-each-other phase, followed by a flirtation stage, then the passionate period once they commit, and finally, a lull. I won’t delve into the earlier stages you and Miss Patton have gone through, but based on what you’ve described, it seems you two have reached the lull.”
Malachi noticed that Andrew, normally so confident, now looked thoughtful. He quickly added, “Don’t underestimate this lull. No matter how amazing the earlier stages were, once you enter this lull, there are two possible outcomes: either the relationship stays in that phase, or it ends.”
Andrew frowned, clearly troubled. “Is there no third option?” Neither of those options appealed to him.
Malachi said with a knowing smile, “Of course, there is. You can always reignite the passionate phase, but that’s a bit more challenging.”
Andrew fixed his gaze on Malachi, silently contemplating the advice.
“Malachi,” Andrew said, “I’ll double your salary this month. Just explain it carefully.”
Double salary?! Malachi’s face lit up with the promise of a bonus, transforming him into an instant love guru.
“The reason relationships often hit a lull,” Malachi continued, “is that couples grow so familiar with each other that the initial excitement fades. Comfort sets in, and soon enough, flaws begin to surface.
To rekindle that spark, both you and Miss Patton need to make a conscious effort—being understanding, supportive, and continually finding new ways to get along. Even when you know someone as well as you know Miss Patton, every day is still a new day. How you live it can still hold unknowns and fresh experiences.
The key to finding that passion again lies in these two things. But since every couple is unique, this is something only you can figure out together.”
Andrew nodded, his mind whirring with the information. “You can leave now.”
Malachi could tell from Andrew’s thoughtful expression that his words had struck a chord. What he had shared came from real-life relationship advice his friends had given. Given Andrew’s higher intellect, Malachi was confident he would succeed.
As Malachi exited, he couldn’t help but hope that Andrew and Isabella would rekindle their spark soon.
They were his favorite real-life couple.
Inside the office, after Malachi left, Andrew now had clarity on the path ahead. While he didn’t see any flaws in Isabella, he understood that routine life could dull the excitement if it wasn’t nurtured with care and romance.
He pulled out his phone and began to ask people online how they surprised their loved ones.
There were dozens of responses to the post soon. Andrew sifted through them, but with each suggestion, his frown deepened.
The reason was simple: none of these ideas felt right for Isabella.
To Andrew, Isabella was inimitable, one of a kind.
Though the netizens’ ideas were pleasant, none of them matched his idea of a meaningful surprise.
If Malachi had been there, he would have had a laugh at Andrew’s expense. Malachi could have easily identified the inexperience behind those net names offering advice. Could their idea of romance ever match someone with Andrew’s vast resources?
But Malachi wasn’t there, and Andrew didn’t yet realize where the problem lay.
He set the phone down and grabbed his pen, writing the word “Plan” in bold, deliberate strokes on the page.
Isabella’s hard work had paid off. Although one final stage remained, Patton Group had significantly improved according to her plan, and employee productivity had surged.
Watching the employees greet her, beaming with joy, Isabella felt a surge of pride, a deep sense of accomplishment filling her heart. As she soaked in the moment, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and saw it was her mother calling.
“Mom,” Isabella answered.
