In the video, Docie appeared anxious as she explained herself, but the audience didn’t seem convinced.

“Mistook Dane for someone else because you were drunk? And he just let you hug him? Who’s buying this?”

“Why does she look so scared? And why does she keep glancing off-camera? What’s there?”

“It’s obvious, isn’t it? They had an affair, and now Dane is pinning it all on her. Rich families are the worst.”

The explanation Docie had prepared had already been vetted by the public relations team.

They had approved it before letting her recite it. However, they hadn’t predicted that her seemingly adequate explanation would backfire due to her subtle expressions and body language.

Trolls flooded her comment section, stirring up trouble, and few seemed to believe her story.

“It’s late, but so many people suddenly flocked here?”

The public relations team was in disarray, struggling with the situation. Isabella, who had been handling this area since joining the Patton Group, wasn’t surprised. Andrew also tracked down the individuals responsible for hiring the internet trolls.

“Miss Patton, a third of them aren’t even from rival companies, another third are genuine internet users, and the rest are tied to Global Entertainment,” Andrew’s secretary spoke cautiously.

It wasn’t shocking that Global Entertainment was meddling in all of this. Ignoring Global Entertainment, Isabella addressed the public relations team.

“Dig up dirt on those smaller companies and make it public.”

Tracing the source of the scandal no longer mattered. Isabella decided not to waste time on it. Instead, she planned to strike back and let those smaller companies face the heat of being the center of attention online.

Dane’s jacket had been sent for testing earlier. Before the results came in, Isabella reached out to Susan’s father.

“Mr. Riggs, my brother would never betray Susan.

To protect his reputation, I need the complete list of perfume formulas Docie used at Riggs Group.”

Esteban promptly sent Docie’s perfume-making records to Isabella. She reviewed the records, focusing on the perfumes Docie had recently created.

It didn’t take long for her to notice something unusual.

Susan had previously created a hypnotic fragrance powder. Docie, having learned from her, was capable of doing the same.

In one of her perfumes, Docie had used a dangerously large amount of a certain ingredient to amplify its effects. If Dane hadn’t been familiar with such tactics, he might not have thought to test the scent on his clothes.

This discovery was the key to resolving the entire situation.

Isabella sent the ingredient to a trusted testing agency, known for its precision and efficiency.

The following morning, the agency reported that breathing in the odor could cause dizziness, fatigue, and nausea.

The doctors acted swiftly, saving Susan’s life with timely treatment. Although the baby was unharmed, she would need extra rest in the coming weeks.

Sitting beside her, Dane held her hand and told her everything.

“Susan, Docie plotted against me and tried to harm you and the baby. I won’t let her get away with it.”

He looked deeply into Susan’s eyes, waiting for her response.

Susan tightened her grip on Dane’s hand and said, “I’ve always been kind to her, but she actually wanted to hurt us. Don’t worry, I won’t go easy on her. Anyone who harms you and the baby is my enemy.”

Susan had always been gentle and kind-hearted, but what Docie had done made her furious. She cast a quick glance at Isabella and the others who had been helping. “Sorry for all the trouble. I’m genuinely grateful for your help.”

“Family doesn’t keep score. As long as you and the baby are safe, and your bond with Dane remains intact, it’s all worth it,” Elaine said, watching Susan closely, concerned that she might be overthinking things.

Susan felt a wave of gratitude, the sting of Docie’s betrayal slowly easing as she was surrounded by love. She turned to Dane. “With the evidence of Docie’s scheming in hand, resolve this quickly. I’ll support whatever decision you make.”

Docie hadn’t shown up for work that day. When she entered the kitchen in the morning, her two roommates exchanged uneasy glances, though they kept their silence.

She paid them no mind. After all, she had already explained that it was all because she had mistaken Dane for someone else. If people refused to believe that and insisted on tying her to Dane, there was little she could do to change their opinions.

Her primary concern now was Susan’s well-being.

Docie sat at the dining table, phone in hand, contemplating whether to call Susan again. Her online explanation had been completely true. If Susan didn’t believe it, there was nothing more she could do. Even the call she made to Susan could be seen as an expression of concern.

Since Susan wasn’t at the office, and Dane knew nothing about perfumes, they wouldn’t detect any issue with the scent. Docie, knowing Susan’s nature, felt confident that Susan would give others the benefit of the doubt. Once Susan found no inconsistencies, she would likely believe it was all a misunderstanding and perhaps even feel resentment toward the ruthless paparazzi and those who had photographed the scene.

At that point, Docie could offer to care for Susan personally, ensuring her stay in the manor and her daily encounters with Dane. As Docie continued to ponder, she grew increasingly certain that everything was falling into place. It had only been about two weeks since she met Dane, yet she was already making notable progress in getting closer to him.

A surge of excitement filled her heart. It seemed that luck was truly on her side. She decided that after finishing her meal, she would head to Patton Manor to visit Susan.

Docie’s eyes sparkled with happiness. She set her phone on the table, quickly finished eating, changed her clothes, and hurried downstairs, eager to catch a taxi to head to Patton Manor.

But as she stepped out of the stairwell, she noticed the neighbors, who usually exercised nearby, glaring at her.

They pointed at her and scolded her, their faces serious.

“How could a young girl like her think she can take someone else’s husband? She really has no manners! Thank goodness I didn’t introduce my younger son to her back then.”

“My daughter-in-law said she has gone out of her way to destroy someone’s family. It’s causing quite a stir online! She really has no shame!”

Their harsh words stung Docie. She approached them and said, “You don’t know the truth. Stop spreading lies. I didn’t destroy anyone’s family. I just mistook him for someone else!”

But the more she tried to explain, the more they just looked at her with disdain.

“Young girl, you’re lying. You say it was a mistake, but the president of the Patton Group says you set a trap for him!”

These elders had heard about the situation from their families, and while Docie was unaware of the latest online developments, they were all too well-informed.

She assumed they simply didn’t believe her explanation and felt there was no point in arguing with them—it would only upset her further. She didn’t want to waste any more time and was eager to go see Susan.

Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from her family. Docie knew her reputation had been damaged, but she believed that explaining everything to her family would clear things up.

They weren’t like these stubborn old folks who refused to understand. However, the moment she answered the call, her father’s sharp scolding hit her like a slap, leaving her frozen in shock.

“Docie, do you see the mess you’ve created? You used that harmful perfume to lure a married man, betraying those who had your back. Is this what we taught you? From now on, never call yourself my daughter again!”

Docie’s father hung up abruptly. When Docie tried to call him back, she found that she had been blocked.

Clutching her phone, Docie felt deep confusion. Her father, who had always been so caring, had scolded her without even hearing her side of the story. What troubled her even more was how he had found out about the perfume.

Unable to reach him, she dialed her mother, who was always kinder. Her mother picked up immediately.

This time, it was Docie who spoke first. “Mom, you have to trust me! Everything I said online is true. Please talk to Dad. Stop him from spreading lies about me or saying I’m not his daughter.”

But all her mother did was sigh heavily before her father took the phone from her.

“Docie, look online for yourself. Am I falsely accusing you? The evidence is right there. What more can you say? Don’t blame your mother and me for being harsh. Your brother’s future is at stake, and we can’t let him be dragged down by your actions. Let’s cut all ties from here on out.”

Docie’s face drained of color as her father’s words struck her. What evidence was he talking about? What had she missed?

She quickly searched the latest news. Patton Group and a testing agency had released their findings about the perfume. Meanwhile, Riggs Group had published Docie’s perfume formulations and announced they were ending their contract with her.

Susan had also posted on her personal account, revealing she was terminating her mentorship with Docie and would take legal action for the damage she’d caused to her and her husband.

Had the secret of the perfume never come to light, Docie might have only faced skepticism, and her life wouldn’t have been deeply impacted. In time, those doubts would have faded.

But now that the truth was out, she was blacklisted from the industry. Susan would never listen to her explanations again, and Dane would never forgive her.

Docie was stunned. She had ruined her own future. Out in public, people would point fingers at her, and even her roommates were avoiding her. Home was the only place left to turn.

Docie couldn’t believe her dream had ended before it had even begun. As she stood there, the landlord and a deliveryman approached her.

The landlord said to the deliveryman, “That’s Docie. Hand her the package. I’m not renting to her anymore. Patton Group offered me double the rent.”
