Just then, Kristine emerged from the kitchen, offering soup to Lynda before turning to Isabella, saying, “I’ve made some soup. Would you like to try it?”
“Give it a try. Kristine has a knack for cooking,” Lynda said.
“No, thanks.” Isabella turned and headed upstairs without another word.
Kristine appeared dejected and hurt, murmuring softly, “It seems Isabella is still upset with me. Could it be because I doubted her during the contest?”
Lynda scowled and advised, “This isn’t the first time you’ve done something like this. I realize Isabella’s return affects you, but remember, you’re a dancer. Nothing should hold you back. Stay on the right path!”
She was very serious, and her words were purely educational, without a hint of tenderness.
Kristine bit her lip, feeling downcast. In the past, her aunt might have offered comfort, but now, she seemed only to reprimand her.
Kristine felt a wave of sadness wash over her. Her aunt had been the only one in the family who had supported her before!
How could Isabella take even that away from her?
“Aunt, I appreciate your advice. I’ll give it my all in dancing and make you proud,” Kristine said, trying to mask the bitterness she felt.
“Alright. Get some rest,” Lynda replied, her voice warming a bit. She sincerely hoped Kristine would perform well in the upcoming competition.
Back in her room, Kristine began watching videos of previous international dance contests. The competitors were formidable, and Kristine felt the weight of pressure building up inside her.
The event was designed for young dancers, and participants couldn’t be over forty years old. However, the caliber of the dancers from abroad was overwhelming. As Kristine watched, she realized the difficulty of making it into the top ten, and sleep became elusive.
By two in the morning, she was still awake, restlessly turning in bed. Unable to sleep, she decided to go for a walk.
As she stepped out of her room, she noticed a light shining in the living room. Driven by curiosity, she approached and caught sight of someone dancing gracefully by the large window.
The dancer executed each move flawlessly, with a level of perfection Kristine knew she could never match. The complexity of the steps came naturally to her. Even alongside a former international champion, Isabella would hold her own.
Kristine’s face paled, her hand tightening on the handrail. A dreadful thought consumed her: If Isabella won the championship and I failed to place in the top ten, Isabella would steal the spotlight again, leaving me in the shadows. Was it even worth competing?
Her thoughts swirled in chaos, and she didn’t realize how long she had been watching until Isabella ceased dancing and noticed her.
Isabella showed little reaction, as if Kristine was merely another face in the crowd, and walked upstairs.
As Isabella walked past, Kristine made a sudden move and fell down the stairs!
Blood quickly pooled on the stark white floor.
Isabella’s expression tightened as she hurried back downstairs.
Just then, a servant walked into the room and, upon witnessing the scene, screamed loudly, “Ahhh!”
The scream pierced the stillness of the villa, waking everyone.
That night, Kristine was swiftly taken to the hospital. The entire family rushed with her. They were stunned to learn that Kristine had taken a serious fall down the stairs.
It wasn’t until the early morning that Kristine began to come around. Spotting the bandages enveloping her, she panicked. “Mom, what happened to me?”
Elaine’s face was sad as she replied, “You fell down the stairs. You’ve hurt your leg badly and will need to rest a lot. It looks like you won’t be able to participate in the international competition.”
Lynda stood quietly behind, her expression a mix of regret, helplessness, and sympathy.
“Ah…” Kristine was visibly shocked.
To onlookers, she seemed to be reeling from the pain. However, internally, she felt no pain, only a sense of relief. She was secretly pleased that she wouldn’t have to compete and face the pressure of performing well.
Her eyes suddenly met Isabella’s, and a brief flicker of panic crossed her face. “Luckily, Isabella can still participate in the competition,” she murmured.
Elaine frowned, puzzled by Kristine’s odd reaction. “How did you fall?”
“I just slipped by accident,” Kristine muttered, her voice shaky and her manner uneasy.
She cast a quick glance at the servant nearby.
The servant hesitated before saying, “I had gone to the living room to make sure everything was tidy. I wasn’t expecting to find…” She trailed off, looking uncomfortable.
“What did you find?” Lynda pressed.
The servant still hesitated, casting a worried look toward Isabella.
Lynda noticed and fixed her gaze on the servant. “What did you see? Tell us.”
“I saw Miss Isabella Patton… It looked like she pushed Miss Kristine Patton down the stairs.” The servant quickly lowered her gaze after speaking.
“That can’t be right. There’s been some misunderstanding!” Elaine immediately rejected the accusation, looking to Isabella for her explanation.
Kristine felt a surge of bitterness. Even when I’m injured, Elaine shows no suspicion toward Isabella. How could she be so unfair?
Noticing the complete trust in Elaine’s eyes, Isabella felt an unexpected warmth. Her typically aloof demeanor softened a bit. “Kristine, you should tell them,” she said.
Kristine’s hands shook as she clenched them tightly, her voice filled with fear. “Mom, please don’t ask. I already told you, it was an accident. I just slipped on the stairs. That’s all.”
Her voice was laced with helplessness, as if she were being forced to say something she didn’t want to.
A look of unease passed among everyone in the room, their faces clouded with doubt.
“I saw it with my own eyes!” The servant interrupted the tense silence, her voice now firm. “I swear, I saw Miss Isabella push Miss Kristine down the stairs!”
Dane turned sharply toward the servant, his piercing gaze locked on her. “Why were you in the living room so late?”
“I was on duty. I was just making sure everything was in order,” the servant replied, avoiding Dane’s intense gaze.
Kristine observed the scene, thinking, The servant spoke so confidently, yet no one seems to believe her. Why?
“This is absurd. Do you have any proof?” Isabella scoffed slightly, her tone tinged with sarcasm. Her gaze, however, remained locked on Kristine. “Kristine, this is your last chance. Tell the truth.”
Kristine wasn’t happy to hear those words.
Why did Isabella think she had the right to boss her around like that?
“I didn’t want to say it, but since you keep pushing like you’re trying to slander me… Isabella, I’m going to be honest—you’re the one who pushed me!” Kristine cried out, tears cascading down her cheeks. “I admit I had my doubts about you during the competition, but that doesn’t give you the right to sabotage my shot at the international competition, does it? I’ve given up so much for this—everyone knows that!”
Lynda remained silent, her expression tangled with emotions.
Elaine took a deep breath, visibly upset. Whether Isabella was guilty or Kristine was setting her up, the situation left a bad taste in her mouth.
Glenn patted Elaine’s shoulder, his expression hardening as he spoke to Kristine, “I’ll get to the bottom of this. For now, focus on recovering.” With those words, he walked Elaine out of the room.
Dane and Isabella followed them in silence.
Once they were gone, only Lynda and the servant remained with Kristine.
Kristine, her tears flowing freely now, turned to Lynda. “Aunt, are you doubting me too?”
Lynda, feeling a twinge of sympathy, sighed. “Kristine, if Isabella truly did this, I won’t forgive her. But we need the truth.” Her tone was firm but gentle.
Kristine clenched her fists, seething internally. Why does no one believe me? She was on the brink of losing all control.
Isabella and her parents returned home. The car ride was thick with tension.
Upon arriving, Elaine turned to Isabella, her gaze soft and motherly. “You should get some rest,” she advised.
Isabella nodded, and after retreating to her room, she quickly slipped into a deep sleep, exhausted from the stress.
When she awoke, the world had changed.
