Isabella smiled faintly. “So, is this the person you wanted to introduce, Susan?”

Susan nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! Meet Docie Haywood, my student.”

Turning to Docie, Susan added with pride, “Docie, this is Miss Patton—an incredibly brilliant and inspiring woman.”

Docie stepped forward with a polite demeanor. “Miss Patton, it’s an honor to meet you,” she said respectfully.

Isabella raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Docie, would you like something to drink?”

“A cup of coffee, please,” Docie replied with a grateful smile.

Isabella turned to the secretary. “Could you bring a cup of coffee, please?”

“Right away, Miss Patton,” the secretary replied.

Moments later, the secretary returned with the coffee, placed it on the table, and quietly left the room. As Docie sipped her coffee, Susan began sharing the story of how they met. Her face softened with a warm smile as she spoke.

“Docie joined Riggs Group almost a year ago, when she was fresh out of college. She’s incredibly talented, and I liked her from the moment I met her,” Susan said fondly. “I’d thought about mentoring someone before but never found the right fit. Then Docie came along, and I knew I couldn’t let the chance slip by. Honestly, I feel like having her around is bringing good luck to both me and my baby.”

Isabella listened intently, noticing the genuine affection in Susan’s voice. She couldn’t help but smile, feeling happy for her friend. She sincerely congratulated Susan on finding such a wonderful student.

The conversation flowed easily, and time passed quickly. When lunchtime rolled around, Isabella stood up and said, “Since I just got back and this is my first time meeting Docie, lunch is on me. What do you feel like eating?”

Susan chuckled. “Isabella, since this is Docie’s first time meeting you, why don’t we let her choose? Docie, do you have a favorite place in mind?”

Both women turned to Docie, who blinked her wide eyes, visibly excited. “Really? I get to choose? There’s this amazing barbecue spot I love, but it’s a bit far from here. Would that be okay, Miss Patton?”

“Barbecue?” Isabella repeated, glancing at Susan.

Her expression turned thoughtful. Barbecue had bold flavors, and the ingredients were often raw or heavily spiced—perhaps not ideal for someone pregnant.

Susan glanced at Isabella, catching the subtle concern in her eyes. She hadn’t expected Docie to suggest a barbecue place, but since Docie was excited about it, and Isabella had enjoyed it before, Susan didn’t want to spoil the mood.

“Sounds great. It’s been ages since I last had a barbecue,” Susan said with a smile. “Isabella, let’s go with Docie’s choice.”

Isabella nodded. “Alright, I’ll reserve a private room now.” After a drive of over half an hour, they finally arrived at the barbecue restaurant.

As they settled into the private room, the waiter handed them a tablet to place their orders. “Since this is both Susan’s and my first time here, Docie, why don’t you go ahead and order? Choose whatever you think is good,” Isabella said, smiling at the young woman.

Docie beamed and eagerly took the tablet, quickly making her choices.

Once she finished, Isabella grabbed the tablet to check if anything else needed to be added. Her eyes scanned the list of Docie’s choices, and her fingers froze for a moment.

After a brief pause, Isabella looked up, her expression composed. “Docie, Susan is pregnant. Let’s order something milder and add a few light dishes.”

“Okay, all right,” Docie said with a quick nod before turning to Susan, her voice laced with sympathy. “Miss Riggs, it must be so hard for you to be pregnant and stuck eating nothing but bland food.”

Even though the ingredients hadn’t arrived, the barbecue restaurant’s air was thick with the tempting, spicy aroma. Susan, feeling queasy since stepping inside, mustered a strained smile. “It’s not that bad. Sure, there’s some physical discomfort, but deep down, I feel really happy.” After that, Susan fell silent. Isabella noticed her discomfort and poured a glass of lemon water, sliding it across the table toward her.

Soon, the server brought over the prepared ingredients. Isabella turned to Susan and said warmly, “Susan, what would you like? I’ll grill it for you.”

“Okay, thank you, Isabella.”

Isabella nodded and served her a bowl of chicken soup. Across the table, Docie picked up the plate of shrimp Isabella had ordered for Susan.

Isabella glanced at Docie, who smiled at her. “I usually go for a cheaper type of shrimp, but this one looks so good! Miss Patton, did you just add this to the order?”

Faced with Docie’s cheerful grin, Isabella couldn’t quite pin down what she felt. She wanted to say something, but since Susan remained quiet, she simply replied, “This shrimp really is delicious. If you like it, feel free to have more.”

Docie’s eyes lit up. “Yeah, I will.”

Once they’d finished their barbecue, the trio returned to the Natural Beauty’s building.

Docie left for a meeting about collaboration with the relevant team, while Susan and Isabella stayed behind in the office, leisurely chatting until their conversation naturally drifted to Docie.

Susan leaned back in her chair, smiling as she praised Docie’s efficiency. “That girl is something else. She’s got the knack for sealing deals in just one meeting. Among the newbies, she’s risen the fastest.”

Isabella nodded thoughtfully. “Sounds like she’s had quite the lucky streak. But sometimes, rushing ahead like that isn’t a good thing.”

Initially, Isabella had taken a liking to Docie, but after their meal together, she’d started to notice a few flaws. Docie had a tendency to think more about herself than others.

Susan, being Isabella’s close friend for over a decade, picked up on her subtle concerns immediately. “I get it, Isabella. But young girls like her—they’ve got their strengths and weaknesses. Give her some time; she’ll grow into it.”

Isabella considered her words and nodded. “Since she’s your student, Susan, I’ll help her if she needs it.”

“Isabella, I knew I could count on you.”

Later, in the car, Susan and Docie sat together in the backseat, reviewing a contract.

After a quick skim, Susan nodded approvingly. “You’ve done well.”

Docie’s face lit up, and with newfound confidence, she tilted her chin up. “Of course, Miss Riggs! I’m your student now. I have to be the best.”

Watching her, Susan couldn’t help but smile. At Docie’s age, she’d been far less confident, more self-conscious. She hoped Docie could hold onto her brightness and positivity as she grew.

Docie carefully tucked the contract away, then suddenly asked, “Miss Riggs, what does Miss Patton think of me?”

Susan hesitated, remembering Isabella’s earlier comments. Not wanting to risk any misunderstandings, she carefully chose her words.

“Isabella’s my best friend, and since you’re my student, she sees you as hers too. If you ever run into trouble, she’ll help you out.”

Before Docie could press further, Susan deftly changed the subject.

“By the way, since you’re my student now, I need to think about your future. I’m hosting a small banquet on Friday with some important connections. You’ll need to prepare. You might meet people who could really help you. The dress for the banquet is ready; we’ll pick it up soon.”

“Wow, really? That’s amazing!” Docie’s excitement was palpable. “I’ll do my absolute best, Miss Riggs!”

“Good,” Susan said with a nod. “How are you coming along with the fragrance experiment records I gave you? You haven’t asked any questions about them.”

Docie’s mind immediately went to the thick compilation of fragrance knowledge Susan had given her. The book was quite extensive and covered a wide range of topics, but it was full of valuable insights.

“I’ve been reading it, and so far, there hasn’t been anything I couldn’t understand.”

“That’s good to hear.”

Susan nodded and instructed the driver to head to a store to pick up Docie’s dress.

In the evening, back at her rented apartment, Docie carefully opened the dress box that Susan had given her and set it down on the table in the living room. Her two roommates immediately rushed over, and one of them couldn’t resist reaching out to gently touch the dress nestled inside the box.

“Oh my gosh, Docie! This dress looks like it costs a fortune, and Miss Riggs just handed it to you like it’s no big deal!”

“I’m so jealous, Docie. We’ve all been grinding since graduation, but look at you! You landed a spot at Riggs Group, skyrocketed up the ladder, and now you’ve got the company president as your personal mentor. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s even throwing a party for you. Honestly, it’s like something straight out of a fairy tale!”

Docie and her roommates had been college friends, and all of them had applied to Riggs Group after graduation, though only Docie had made it in.

The two glanced at Docie, then exchanged a look before hugging each other dramatically.

Docie chuckled, shaking her head. “Oh, come on, I’ve said this before—you’ve got to put in the effort if you want a bright future after graduation.”

Her roommates pulled exaggeratedly pitiful faces. “Haven’t we worked hard enough already? Seriously, what more can we even do? We’ve been in this together since day one, but we just don’t have your kind of luck, Docie. Honestly, we’ve had to accept it over the years.” Shaking off the comparisons, they quickly became excited again.

“Your career is absolutely soaring. With the Riggs Group president mentoring you, fancy parties to attend, and all those high-society connections, it’s only a matter of time before you find love too.”

“Oh, stop it, you two!” Docie snapped the lid of the dress box shut, though she couldn’t hide her smile.

Her two roommates flanked her with teasing grins. “Don’t be shy now! You’re a grown woman, and it’s totally normal to meet someone you’re into.”

“Exactly, Docie. You’ll be mingling with the elite soon enough. Just promise you won’t forget about us when you meet someone special.”
