Alan’s family was less powerful than the Vettel family. During Andrew’s visit to Mafelen this time, Alan’s family had discussed potential partnerships with him. At that time, Alan had been standing behind his father the entire time, barely more than a shadow in the background. Alan recognized Andrew immediately and realized he had crossed the wrong person. Panic swept across his face, and the arrogance that had once filled him evaporated in an instant. He frantically pleaded with Andrew for forgiveness.

“Mr. Klein, I am truly sorry…”

Andrew’s icy gaze remained unchanged as he pulled out his phone and dialed Alan’s dad.

Alan’s father arrived at the restaurant soon after. When he heard what Alan had done, his fury flared, and he raised his cane, ready to strike him. To ensure the collaboration didn’t fall through, Alan’s father punished him even more harshly than Andrew had.

Alan’s crying made Albertine’s posture relax in a way that hinted at relief. Then, her eyes shifted to the man beside Isabella. She didn’t recognize Andrew, but she noticed he merely made a phone call and helped Dr. Mia vent her anger without causing a rift with Alan’s father. This really took Albertine by surprise. Fear crept in as she realized that after Andrew dealt with Alan, he might turn his attention to her. After all, she was the one who had put Dr. Mia in danger.

However, her fears didn’t come true. After Alan was taken away by his father, Andrew gently took Isabella’s hand and led her to their table. Isabella then invited Albertine to join them.

Albertine lowered her head and carefully ordered her food, a stark contrast to the carefree attitude she had shown when first meeting Isabella.

Isabella waited until Albertine was finished before gently asking, “Albertine, could you tell me why Alan dared to force you? After all, you’re a member of the Vettel family. If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine.”

Isabella’s calm, gentle tone didn’t provoke any resistance from Albertine. Since she had saved her tonight, it seemed only natural for Isabella to be curious. Albertine lifted her head, offering a somewhat awkward smile.

“Actually, I’m just an illegitimate child my father brought home. I didn’t grow up with the family, but because I share their blood, I’m expected to contribute. Alan, though, is much scarier than anyone I’ve dealt with before. I’m really scared of him.”

Albertine’s brief explanation helped Isabella understand the situation, but it still seemed hard to believe. Even though Albertine was an illegitimate child, she shouldn’t have been treated as an object that could be handed over to anyone.

Isabella remembered Ailyn mentioning that her uncle had become infertile due to an injury when he was younger and that he only had one daughter, Albertine. If they weren’t going to treat Albertine well, why bother bringing her home at all?

“How have you been living with your family?” Isabella asked, a trace of sympathy in her voice.

Albertine lowered her gaze, focusing on her dessert. “It’s much better than the orphanage. I have enough food, a place to sleep, and I don’t have to worry about earning money.”

“Don’t you go to school?” Isabella asked, finding Albertine’s situation stranger than the children she had sponsored before. At least those kids yearned for knowledge, but Albertine didn’t.

Hearing Isabella’s question, Albertine looked up, surprised. “I was brought in from outside. The family’s resources are only for Ailyn, who grew up there. My father, me, and many others are just here to serve Ailyn.”

Hearing this, Isabella fell silent. Albertine’s perspective had likely been shaped by those around her, and it would be difficult to change her thinking quickly. Isabella could only look at her and order another dessert for her.

“Thank you, Miss Patton,” Albertine said, smiling as she took the small dessert for herself. After finishing it, she sipped her drink and said to Isabella, “Miss Patton, you’ve been so kind, but I can’t stay any longer. I need to go back and tell my father about Alan.”

Actually, Albertine knew her father would find out tomorrow, even if she didn’t say anything. But since Isabella had no reason to keep her, she let her leave.

After Albertine left, Isabella barely touched her food. She and Andrew returned to the hotel. Passing by the cabinet, Isabella noticed the lollipop she had casually placed there when emptying her pocket.

Under the moonlight, the Vettel family’s manor stood grand and imposing, like something out of a fairy tale. Albertine walked down the winding garden path, heading back to the castle where she and her father lived. She pushed open the castle gate and climbed the spiral staircase, planning to go to the study to find her father.

The study door was open. Her father, seemingly unconcerned about intruders, was in the middle of a conversation with Ailyn.

Albertine was about to enter and tell them everything that had happened at the restaurant that night when Ailyn’s voice stopped her.

“If Andrew and Isabella both suddenly die, no one will connect Dr. Mia to them. Once we control Dr. Mia’s thoughts, she’ll always be a tool for our Vettel family, and her medical skills will belong to us. We can even cancel the unprofitable deal with the Klein Group.”

Albertine stopped abruptly, stunned by what she heard. Was Ailyn trying to harm Isabella and Andrew? And would her father agree?

While Albertine was lost in thought, her father said, “I’ll make sure this gets taken care of. Your decision will make our family even stronger.”

Pausing for a second, he continued with satisfaction, “Ailyn, you already have the demeanor of a leader. Once your father wakes up, you two will definitely get those unruly family branches in line.”

Ailyn smiled modestly. “Whatever success I have today, I owe it to you, Uncle. Thank you for all your help. By the way, it’s getting late. I think I have to take my leave now.”

Albertine’s father nodded in agreement. “Alright. Be careful on the way.”

When Albertine heard that, she quickly backed away and hid. Fortunately, the lights in the corridor were dim, so they didn’t see her. Besides, Ailyn didn’t expect her to come back.

They had no idea that Albertine heard everything, and their conversation had upset her a lot.

Albertine was not the type of person who overthought things. But she wasn’t stupid. Of course, she figured out that her father and Ailyn had been scheming against Dr. Mia.

In the past, she would have simply gone along with whatever plans were laid out for her. But this time was different. Dr. Mia and Andrew had helped her earlier that night and even bought her a good dinner. She didn’t want them to get hurt.

As soon as her father and Ailyn walked past where she was hiding, Albertine rushed back to her room and jumped into her bed, not even daring to turn on the lights. After thinking for a while, she made a firm decision. She would talk to Dr. Mia and tell her everything she had heard.

She went out of her room to go to the hotel where Isabella stayed. But as soon as she reached the stairs, she bumped into her father head-on.

It was a dreamless night for Isabella, so she had a good sleep. The next day, she woke up early, just in time for the hotel’s room service breakfast.

She was scheduled to perform surgery on the patriarch of the Vettel family today, and Andrew had been invited by the senior executives of the Vettel family’s company.

Surgery was pivotal. Once Isabella successfully performed it, Andrew would sign a cooperation agreement with the Vettel family.

Isabella put down her fork and knife and looked at Andrew. He was already in a suit, exuding elegance and nobility. He was so handsome that she couldn’t help but lean in and give him a peck on the cheek.

Andrew reacted quickly and grabbed her wrist, preventing her from running away after stealing a kiss.

While in Mafelen, they were both busy with their own jobs, and they didn’t have much time to have an intimate moment. At this time, Andrew felt a strong urge to keep Isabella in his sight.

“Sweetheart, can I keep you company today?” Andrew suddenly asked.

Isabella was caught off guard by his question. She raised her head, looked at him in surprise, and asked, “What about your appointment today?”

Andrew rarely canceled appointments, but now, he said, “The collaboration can wait another day.”

“But you’ve already made an appointment.” Isabella reached out and touched Andrew’s strikingly handsome face. “Let’s do our jobs simultaneously. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can go back.”

Andrew was about to say something when his phone suddenly rang. It was his assistant calling.

The assistant immediately said, “Mr. Klein, I’m outside the hotel now. Are you ready?”

Isabella helped straighten Andrew’s tie and said with a smile, “Alright, hurry up now. Don’t keep them waiting.” Andrew pursed his lips and left the hotel room.

Isabella saw him off. She stood by the doorway for a few moments after he disappeared into the elevator. Then, she took out her phone and sent Jared a message. “In half an hour, Ailyn’s people will pick me up.”

At this moment, two luxury cars drove into the Vettel family’s manor. Jared sat in the back seat of one of them, secretly memorizing the layout of the manor. Then he replied to Isabella, “I’m already inside the manor. I’ll talk about a business deal with the Vettels later. Boss, after you’re done, I’ll drive you back to the hotel.”

Isabella replied, “Okay.”

Then, she put her phone away. Although Ailyn had prepared everything for the surgery, she still took the medical kit her mentor had given her with her.

Actually, Isabella hadn’t thought of letting Jared enter the manor. But when she heard about what Albertine had gone through last night, something inside her told her she had to make such an arrangement. She had always trusted her instincts, and they prompted her to call Jared and set up all these plans last night.

Isabella carefully sorted the items in her medical kit, double-checking that everything she might need was in place. Then, she sent Ailyn a message, informing her that she was ready. Soon, a car arrived to pick her up.

As soon as she got to the Vettel family’s manor, she went straight to the patriarch’s room, checked his body, and moved him to the operating room.

Inside the operating room, Isabella stood by the operating table, concentrating on the surgery. Sweat trickled down her forehead, but she didn’t mind it. She didn’t even blink, totally focused on her operation.

The assistants surrounding her were elites in brain surgery. But as they watched her perform the operation, they still couldn’t help but be amazed. At first, they thought that the surgery would take at least nine hours and that there would be great risks. But to their surprise, Isabella’s operation was fast and precise, making them feel less worried.

Seven hours later, the surgery room door opened, and they walked out. Ailyn looked at the assistants with worry in her eyes. She obviously wanted to ask about the surgery.

“Miss Vettel, the operation was successful. The doctor you brought in is really good.”

Ailyn’s tense nerves suddenly eased up. She grabbed the paper cup from Nathan’s hand and handed it to Isabella, staring at her intently.

“Dr. Mia, thank you for all your effort. You must be thirsty. Please have a drink.”

Isabella’s hands trembled slightly after she completed the grueling operation, her throat burning for hydration. Yet instinct—hard-earned through years of vigilance—made her wary of accepting anything from others.

“I’ll drink later,” she demurred.

“Alright, Dr. Mia.”

Ailyn exchanged the paper cup with Nathan for a warm towel. “Allow me to assist you, Dr. Mia,” she offered, moving to dab at the surgeon’s face.
