“Dr. Mia, the Peterson Underground Winery is hosting a gathering. Would you care to join?”
“Dr. Mia, may I pay you a visit?”
“Dr. Mia, have you heard that…”
Isabella scanned through Ailyn’s messages, each one marked by her steady refusal. Ailyn’s tenacity was becoming apparent.
She replied, “Since I promised to go to Mafelen, I won’t go back on my word. Please, don’t worry. Also, I would prefer if you called me Miss Patton.”
“Absolutely, Miss Patton. I’ll remember that.”
This respectful tone was a significant shift from Ailyn’s earlier demeanor towards Isabella. Such a sudden change called for caution. Keeping this in mind, Isabella thought about her plans in Mafelen and decided to set up a meeting with Jared at a cafe.
“Boss, are you actually planning to treat the head of the Vettel family?” Jared’s surprise made him nearly spit out his coffee.
With a solemn nod, Isabella replied, “They possess something I want.”
“Their influence spans broadly, though,” Jared said with concern. The responsibilities of Isabella’s role brought risks, given that they entailed securing the life of the Vettel family head.
“This is why I’m seeking your help,” Isabella explained. “With proper preparation, I can approach the situation with greater peace of mind.”
Jared’s finger rhythmically tapped the table as he spoke. “I’m skeptical about leaving this in others’ hands. We have a branch in Mafelen, so I’ll accompany you under the guise of a business trip.”
Isabella was moved by Jared’s sincere expression. “Thank you, Jared.”
“Think nothing of it, boss. But if you want to show your gratitude, assume leadership at Homelight Enterprise once we’re back from Mafelen. Then I might finally take a break.”
Isabella hesitated for a moment. “I have to refuse.”
She was content with her current duties and wasn’t looking to increase her burden.
Jared seemed to have anticipated her response! After their discussion, Isabella headed home to prepare for her departure to Mafelen.
As she was packing, the doorbell chimed. Opening the door, she was greeted by Susan’s cheerful face. “Susan?” Isabella expressed her surprise joyfully and ushered her inside.
“Looks like you’re packing for a trip?” Susan said, spotting the luggage as she entered, puzzled since Dane hadn’t mentioned any travel plans for Isabella.
Handing Susan a glass of milk, Isabella settled next to her. “It’s just a short trip. Don’t worry. As your soon-to-be sister-in-law, I’ll be back before your wedding with Dane.” Isabella gave Susan a mischievous wink. “Our pact hasn’t slipped my mind.”
Susan was set to marry Dane in two weeks, and long ago, they had promised to be present at each other’s weddings. Isabella had even promised to be Susan’s bridesmaid.
Considering Susan’s pregnancy, Isabella added, “Dane has everything under control for the wedding. Just focus on being radiant. Let the others manage the routine tasks at work. Take it easy.”
Isabella wasn’t the type to dish out reminders often, but this was Susan—her best friend and a mom-to-be. If anyone needed a little extra care, it was her.
As Isabella spoke, Susan sat there with the glass of milk in hand, smiling at her. Isabella frowned, her eyebrows knitting together.
“Susan, what’s so funny? Were you even paying attention to what I just said?”
Isabella couldn’t help but wonder if her friend’s pregnancy had made her a bit scatterbrained. Susan gave a small cough. “I was listening.”
Her cheeks were flushed with a delicate rosiness, and her whole demeanor radiated contentment. “I’m just… happy.”
Susan’s hand drifted instinctively to her belly as she continued, “Ever since I found out this little one is your brother’s, I’ve been so excited for its arrival. I mean, think about it—being with the man I love, having a career I’m proud of, fixing things with my dad… and now my best friend is also my sister-in-law. Honestly, there’s no moment more perfect than this.”
Susan, ever so composed and gentle, wore a serene smile that only seemed to deepen her quiet beauty. Isabella found herself captivated by her best friend’s glow.
“This is just the beginning. Now that you’re my best friend and my sister-in-law, there’s a whole lot of joy coming your way.”
“I can’t wait.”
Susan downed the last of her milk, then glanced over at Isabella’s suitcase. “Need a hand? I can help you pack.”
“Sure,” Isabella said warmly.
The two of them kept up a lively conversation. When Andrew returned home from work, he was greeted by the sight of Isabella cheerfully waving goodbye to Susan. Taking her hand in his, he asked with a tender smile,
“Sweetheart, did you have a good time with Susan?”
“Yes…”
Isabella stopped mid-sentence, noticing a peculiar edge in Andrew’s tone.
She tilted her head, stepping closer to him and peering into his handsome face. Her eyes narrowed playfully. “Andrew, don’t tell me you’re jealous of Susan?”
Andrew’s eyes carried a trace of playful grievance as he said, “You seemed to forget all about me while having such a great time with her. Am I not entitled to feel a little jealous?”
The entire afternoon had passed without a single message from Isabella. The moment work ended, Andrew hurried home, only to be greeted by the sight of Susan holding his beloved’s hand.
Isabella was undeniably popular, and Andrew, who had been feeling a bit overlooked all afternoon, cast her an unmistakably displeased look to convey his dissatisfaction.
Isabella was both amused and amazed by Andrew’s jealousy. Without hesitation, she leaned in and placed a quick, soothing kiss on his lips. “Susan came over to help me pack, and she’s grown even gentler since she got pregnant. I’m really happy for her.”
“Oh, you’re happy because she’s pregnant?” Andrew’s gaze deepened slightly, and his lips curled into a sly grin. “What about you?”
“What?” Isabella blinked in confusion, clearly not catching on.
“When you have a baby someday, do you think you’ll be happy for yourself?” Andrew leaned in, his voice low and teasing in her ear.
Isabella’s cheeks heated up as his words sank in. She blinked at him, her wide eyes a mixture of shock and bashfulness.
“Um, are you thirsty? Let me get you some water!”
Isabella attempted to slip away after speaking, but Andrew’s long arm reached out, effortlessly pulling her into his embrace.
“Sweetheart, you’re being naughty.”
Andrew’s deep chuckle rumbled against Isabella’s shoulder. He tilted his head, playfully nipping at the soft curve of her neck.
Startled by the sudden nip, Isabella froze, feeling the warmth of Andrew’s breath against her neck. Her body went limp, surrendering to him as he effortlessly lifted her into his arms.
In the morning, as she lay on the soft, spacious bed, Isabella sensed someone’s gaze upon her. She slowly opened her eyes, meeting Andrew’s loving gaze. “Good morning, sweetheart,” he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Did you sleep well?”
Flashes of the night before—scenes definitely not suitable for public airing—made Isabella blush fiercely.
She glared at Andrew, her watery eyes accusing. Andrew only chuckled, leaning closer. “Do you know what you look like right now?”
Isabella blinked up at him. “What?”
“Like a cat who just got spoiled with cream and knows it.”
Was this really what someone was supposed to say first thing in the morning? Isabella realized her boyfriend was such a shameless CEO!
Seeing the indignation on Isabella’s face, Andrew knew he had pushed his teasing far enough. He quickly pressed a kiss to her lips and said, “Alright, sweetheart, we’ve got to head to the airport today. Let me make you breakfast.” After freshening up, the two shared breakfast before heading to the airport.
Several hours later, as they arrived at their destination, Andrew’s car was waiting outside the airport. Isabella moved toward the door to get in.
But something made her pause. She glanced into the distance. Amidst the bustling crowd, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her. Was it just her imagination?
Andrew noticed her hesitation. “What’s wrong?”
Isabella bit her lip, her eyes scanning the crowd. “I don’t know. It felt like someone was looking at me, but… they’re gone now.”
Andrew remained quiet as the assistant who came to pick him and Isabella up greeted them politely. “Miss Patton, Mr. Klein, you both certainly know how to turn heads. Everyone seems to be watching you.”
Feeling protective of Isabella, Andrew immediately responded, “I want to know who those people over there are and what their intentions might be.”
The assistant nodded, efficiently making a note of Andrew’s request and arranging for the investigation.
