I had never felt more enraged before.

This was all because of that piece of shit. If he had protected her, this wouldn’t have happened. If I had shown up earlier, my Lia would have been safe right now.

I let out a growl and punched the wall, making a deep hole in it.

“She’s gonna be fine, Zane,” Sheila reassured. “Emerald is a witch, you know that. She’ll save her.”

“I know she will,” I replied through a clenched jaw. “But this should not have happened. Lia should not have been hurt in the first place. This is all because of Blake Walker, and because of me.”

“How is this your fault?” Ajax frowned. “The reason she has a chance at survival is because you got there in time.”

“Except I didn’t,” I snapped. “If I had gotten there in time, this wouldn’t have happened. I shouldn’t have let her go with him. I should have known what a loser he is. He wasn’t capable of protecting her at school and he wasn’t capable of protecting her at the restaurant.”

“You couldn’t have known this would happen, Zane,” Sheila said softly.

“I could have. I knew The Order is in town, I knew she called them. I should have been more careful. If anything happens to her, I will not forgive myself.”

“Nothing will happen,” Aaron said as he entered the room. “She’ll be fine, Zane. Stay strong.” He stepped forward and pulled me into a hug, rubbing my back.

I quietly accepted the comfort.

“Where is Warner?” I asked, pulling away from him. “Is he back? Is he safe?”

“Yes, don’t worry. All of us are safe. But he went after the rogue.”

“Good,” I nodded. “I won’t let Lia out of my sight until this wolf has been eliminated. I don’t care if I have to lock her in my room. She’s not going anywhere until that wolf is dead.”

“Yeah, that would be the reasonable thing to do.”

“Alpha,” Emerald said, stepping out of the room. All of us turned to her.

“What is it? Is she okay?”

‘She’s deteriorating. Her body is going cold. I have extracted the poison, but she has lost a lot of blood and I do not have the antidote. We do not have time to make right now.”

One

“What are you saying Emerald? What do we do?” I growled.

“There is only one way, Alpha.”

“I am not turning her,” I stated, shaking my head.

“That is the surest way of saving her life, Alpha,” she tried.

“I will not do that. I cannot, Emerald. She will hate me forever.”

Emerald sighed. “Then there is one other way. But I’m not sure that will work.”

“What is it?” I asked.

“You have to give her your blood. Werewolf blood has healing properties.”

“My blood group might not match hers.” I frowned.

“And the poison could be infused with silver,” Sheila said. “What if there’s a reaction?”

“I did not say it is without risk,” Emerald muttered. “But it’s worth a try. Otherwise, Alpha will have to turn her. He is her mate. Her body might start to heal when it feels the closeness of the one it’s created for.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “Take my blood. Take all of it if you need. Just save my Lia. Please, Emerald. I will owe you my life.”

Emerald clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Please don’t say that, Alpha. Come on in. We have to hurry.”

“Aaron, I want you to join Warner in the hunt. Kill that piece of shit.”

“Alright, Zane, don’t worry. You go in.”

I quickly went inside with Emerald and lay down on the bed beside Lia’s. Her complexion had turned pale, and her arm had turned an ugly green. I looked away from her, sucking in a breath.

Please, I begged the Goddess silently, please protect her. Bring her back to me safe and sound. Please protect my mate.

-ZANE’S POV-

“Tighten your arm, Alpha.”

I did as Emerald instructed, and she filled up a syringe with my blood. She transferred it to a different one and then immediately injected it into Lia’s arm. She stirred, groaning, her expression contorting into one of pain.

“Is she okay? What’s happening to her?” I asked, sitting up.

“It’s a normal reaction, don’t worry. Lie back down, please.”

I tried to relax, offering her my arm again. She took another syringe of my blood, and injected it into her arm. Lia whimpered, although her eyes remained shut.

A tear left my eye, and I quickly wiped it off, hoping Emerald hadn’t seen.

I was supposed to be an Alpha. I was supposed to be strong. Invulnerable. Without any weakness.

But how could I be strong when my mate, my Lia was going through so much pain? When she was fighting for her life?

I took a deep breath, letting her scent fill my nose. Maybe that would calm me down. The wolf within me was restless with worry, begging to be let out. It was telling me to turn her. To eliminate the chance of us losing her.

But my human side refused to do it.

I couldn’t push my decision, my choice onto her. She didn’t want this complication in her life. She didn’t want anything to do with my kind. How could I turn her into a werewolf? She would never forgive me, and she would never be happy.

After Emerald had injected Lia with over ten syringes of my blood, she stood between us, looking at her and then at me.

“What is it?” I asked. “Are we done?”

She nodded.

I sat up, staring at Lia.

“Why isn’t anything happening?” I asked. “Shouldn’t she wake up? Or at least start healing?”

Emerald sighed. “I don’t know, Alpha,” she said softly. “I don’t have so much experience with humans on the brink of death.”

“Don’t say that,” I growled.

She flinched, lowering her gaze.

“Forgive me, but I’m just speaking the truth. She was poisoned,

Alpha. And she lost a lot of blood. Human beings are weak, they’re not like us. They sometimes die after being bitten by at mosquito. Sometimes their heart stops beating at random and they collapse. Without any reason whatsoever.”

“We have humans in our pack, Emerald. There are a number of werewolves in our pack with human mates. You treat them all the time.”

“Not like this, I don’t. Whenever it’s something serious, their mate always turns them. No questions asked. You’re the first one to insist to keep yours human.”

“Yeah, well, my mate is different. She’s stubborn and she knows me since we were kids. She spent the majority of her life despising me because Aaron, Ajax and Warner bullied her. She doesn’t want to be a werewolf, she doesn’t want to be my mate. I cannot force this upon her.”

Emerald frowned deeper. “But, forgive me if I’m overstepping, Alpha, won’t turning her solve your problem too? She would feel the bond and want you as much as you want her.”

“I want her to have the chance to decide. I was born a werewolf, she wasn’t. I always knew I had a mate. She always thought she gets to decide who she ends up with. Things are different for both of us. She found out the truth about me before I could get closer to her, before she could fall in love with me by her own choice.”

Emerald slowly nodded. “I understand. Let’s pray to the Goddess that she is strong enough to get through this.”

“She has to be, Emerald. I am certain that she’s gonna be fine. The Moon Goddess chose her for me for a reason. I am an Alpha, and she is my Luna. I won’t lose her to a scratch.”

Emerald looked like she wanted to say something, but chose to stay silent. “Her pulse isn’t getting better,” I commented. “Shouldn’t something start happening?”

Emerald did not meet my gaze.

“Emerald,” I said, my jaw clenched.

“Alpha, I don’t know. I’ve never dealt with something like this before. But if she shows any sign of deterioration, I’m afraid you won’t have another choice but to turn her.”

I held back a growl. “If something happens, is there anything you can do?”

She shook her head. “I’m afraid not. I have done all I could. I extracted the poison, stitched and bandaged her wound, applied the best healing salve I had and gave her your blood. There’s nothing else I can do.”

“Well, then, thank you. You can leave now. I will stay with her.”

“Yes, Alpha. I’ll be right outside. Call me if anything changes.”

“I will. Thank you.”
