When he looked down at me, the blue glow in his eyes was beginning to fade, leaving only the echoes of lust behind. I felt the energy he’d taken humming across his skin, like it still hadn’t fully settled in, but I didn’t feel drained or weak. More like the euphoric body high of having just run a marathon, except instead of running through a yellow ribbon at the end, I got a mindbending orgasm.
Pretty fair deal, if you ask me.”Fuck,” Marcus growled, looking down at me like I’d had the same effect on him as he had on me.
I smiled in satisfaction as he rolled off me and lay flat on my back, basking in the afterglow. “Took the words right out of my mouth.” I glanced over as he collapsed next to me and ran my hands over the ridges of his fully scarred wounds. “I take it that worked.””Like a charm,” he said, his voice still raw and sexy. He reached over, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “Never fed from a wolf girl before.”
I laughed. “So, how does my sex energy stack up?”
He gave me that crooked grin that stoked the embers burning within my core back into a flame. “No words. But give me five, and maybe I’ll find some.”
* * *
I woke up to an empty bed and rolled over to realize Marcus’ spot was still warm. He’d left a white shirt on the end of the bed, so I pulled it on and walked out of the bedroom to find him at the kitchen stove, cooking something that smelled heavenly.”So you’re a fitness buff, an MMA fighter, a hunter, and a chef?” I asked, leaning in the doorway with my arms folded.
He looked at me over his shoulder, grinning as I wandered over into the kitchen. When his gaze traveled down my body, it grew darker in a way that was now familiar, stirring an equally familiar warmth within my core.”Sorry. I borrowed your shirt.”
His grin widened. “Looks a lot better on you.””Need any help?” I offered, walking over to the counter.”Nope, it’s almost ready.” He brought the skillet to another burner and turned down the heat. Then he indicated the white countertop stools that matched the island. “Have a seat.”
I did, watching as he pulled out a couple of plates from the overhead cabinet. I found myself shamelessly ogling his bare chest, thinking how the scar suited him,?as messed up as that was.
He caught me staring and gave me a knowing look as he set a plate with an omelet in front of me. “Told you it works fast.””You weren’t kidding,” I murmured, taking a glass of orange juice from him. “Thanks.””Not every day I get to cook breakfast for a beautiful woman, he said, sitting at the counter across from me.”I bet you say that to all the people you feed from,” I said dryly, taking a bite of my omelet. He really was a good cook. I could hardly fry an egg without setting off alarms.
He chuckled. “They don’t usually spend the night.””No strings attached, huh?” I tried to sound nonchalant, not wanting him to think I was going to be clingy now that we’d spent the night together. She-wolves kind of had a reputation, and it wasn’t entirely unearned, but no matter how alpha Marcus was, human men and male shifters were two very different animals–literally and figuratively.”It’s not really like that,” he said with a shrug. “I’m not afraid of commitment or anything. It’s just hard to let anyone get close with what I do. Humans have their world, shifters have another, and I’m kind of straddling the lines in between.””Yeah, I can relate to that,” I murmured. When I saw the doubt on his face, I added, “Shifters can be as cliquish as humans. More so. Then there’s the whole hybrid thing…””I forget about that,” he said, studying me a bit closer. “You really have no idea what you are?”
I shook my head, growing somber. “No, and with Mom gone, I’m not sure that’s ever going to change.””They found out because they did a blood test, right?” he pressed. “Wouldn’t they have picked up on whatever else is in there?””Maybe,” I conceded. “But the doc just said she thought I was part human, and I’m banished from the pack, so there’s no way of getting a look at the report to say for sure. Maybe if I could go back somehow, I could go through Mom’s old things and see if she left anything that might help me figure it out. By now, Dad has probably cleared out what’s left of her stuff.”
Marcus frowned. “That’s kind of strange.”
I tilted my head. “What do you mean?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know too much about the inner emotions of male shifters, but it’s hard to imagine a man getting rid of his wife’s things when they were married for decades.””Yeah, well, that’s how he is,” I said with a sigh. In one corner of my head, I knew he was right, but in the other, I just didn’t want to think about it because it would make me sad.
Marcus seemed like he wanted to say something more, so when he didn’t, it piqued my curiosity.”What is it?” I asked.”Nothing, it’s…” He trailed off. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s just the way my brain works, but something about it doesn’t seem right. I don’t just mean the guy being a monster who would throw away his own child, either. If he’s really that controlling and callous, it seems likely he’d have known about something like that long before now.”
I nodded, unnerved by how closely his words echoed Liam’s. “My ex said something along those lines. He thinks Dad–” I grimaced. “
Paul. Guess I should get used to that. Anyway, Liam thinks he used it as an excuse to keep the throne for longer.”
Marcus seemed to be considering it. “Have to say, I think the guy’s judgment is shit on other matters, but he might be right about that.”
I snorted. “I guess we both have difficult exes to contend with.””Cole really isn’t all that bad once you get to know him,” he said with a vague hint of fondness. Definitely didn’t seem to be mutual at this point. “It’s mostly an act.””I’ll take your word for it.” I hesitated, knowing I shouldn’t push my curiosity too much, but it always had gotten the better of me. “Can I ask you a personal question?””I’d say I owe you personal after last night,” he said in a dry tone that made heat rush to my cheeks. And other places. “Shoot.””Why did you and Cole break up?” I finally asked. “If he’s the only person you’ve told your secret to all this time, you had to be close.””We were. He couldn’t stand me when we first met, so I’m pretty sure he only started dating me because he wanted to piss his father off by being with a human. But we grew on each other.”
