Like a cornered wolf, he said in a hoarse voice, his eyes red, “Lily isn’t our biological sister. We don’t share any blood. Why can’t I be with her? I’m truly in love with her. Without her, my life is meaningless. Get out! Don’t force me to turn on you!”
Bodger and Taylor still couldn’t accept that Mergan had romantic feelings for Lily.
And they had no intention of leaving.
This was clearly Mergan’s one-sided obsession. Lily didn’t want to be with him.
She was threatening suicide just to get away.
Although neither of them had much relationship experience, they knew you couldn’t force love.
And Lily was incredibly stubborn. If Mergan insisted on imprisoning her, he would likely drive her to her death.
Their family already owed Lily far too much. They couldn’t stand by and watch Mergan destroy her.
Bodger and Taylor stood their ground. “Stop this obsession. Lily doesn’t love you. Forcing her to stay against her will isn’t love, it’s destroying her life!”
“Exactly. Lily is a living person, not a soulless toy. You have no right to decide her fate. She despises you, she hates you. She could never be happy with you.”
“Mergan, will you only find happiness once you’ve driven Lily to her death?” The question hung heavy in the air, sharp and accusing.
Would I truly be content only if I pushed her over the edge? The thought struck Mergan like a blow, causing his body to tense and his pupils to shrink in sudden pain.
His love for her was profound, almost suffocating. All he ever wanted was to offer her everything-his world, his heart, his unwavering presence. Yet now, a terrifying doubt gnawed at him: was he, in fact, the one leading her straight to ruin? To the grave?
He refused to accept that grim possibility. “I’m not the one pushing her toward death,” he whispered to himself, voice barely audible. “I’ll treat her better than James ever did… Lily always counted on me. She once told me I was the best brother she could ever have. She cared about me deeply. If I’m the only one left for her, eventually she’ll come to love me. She’ll care only for me…”
“Mergan, you are hopelessly insane!” Taylor’s voice cracked with fury as he delivered another harsh kick.
“She depended on you as a brother! After everything we’ve done to hurt her, we don’t even deserve that title anymore.” Taylor’s eyes burned with anger. “How dare you try to crush her happiness and strip away her freedom? We’ve made too many mistakes already. We can’t keep breaking her like this. If you truly want to make amends, if you want to do right by her, then send her back to James safely. Give them your genuine blessing and never interfere again!”
“I will never wish them well,” Mergan spat, the words tasting bitter on his tongue.
His face drained of color, the weight of their words sinking deep into his soul.
He knew Bodger and Taylor were speaking the truth.
He had failed Lily time and again, made too many errors to count. He shouldn’t be making things worse-shouldn’t be dragging her down with him.
Yet the mere thought of letting her go hollowed him out completely. It was as if his heart had been trapped in a cage, clawing desperately for any escape, any chance to hold on.
“You’re a monster!” Bodger’s voice was cold and cutting as he knocked Mergan to the ground. “Look at all the so-called ‘good’ you’ve done over the years. What right do you have to withhold your blessing from Lily and James? You want to be with her? Do you even deserve her?”
“You don’t! If I were Lily, held captive by the one I hated most, I would never learn to love him. I would only want him gone. I’d make sure he paid, even if it meant we both fell together!”
Mergan said nothing. He closed his eyes tightly, pain radiating through him.
He didn’t want destruction for either of them.
He didn’t care about his own fate, but the idea of Lily suffering-being hurt, broken, or worse-was unbearable.
“Bodger, Taylor.”
Lily’s hatred for Mergan was fierce and unmistakable. She despised Bodger and Taylor as well, their presence only stirring more resentment.
Though she loathed them all, her desperation for news about James outweighed her feelings. Her voice trembled as she spoke, fragile and uncertain. “I saw the video… James… he cut his wrists. He… he was saved, right? He’s still alive?”
Bodger and Taylor exchanged uneasy glances.
They had been so consumed with finding Lily that they hadn’t even known James had attempted suicide.
After a moment of stunned silence, both frantically pulled out their phones to search for any news.
The Luke family had clearly sealed off the story-there was nothing online about James’s suicide attempt.
After trying various search terms, Taylor finally said, “Lily, there’s no information about it anywhere.”
But hearing that brought no relief to Lily.
The video Mergan had shown her couldn’t have been fabricated.
The lonely gravestone didn’t prove he was dead, but the fact that he’d cut his wrists was undeniably real.
The absence of news only meant the Luke family was blocking the media from reporting it.
Seeing Lily’s eyes, raw and red as if they might bleed, and her utterly shattered expression, Bodger’s heart ached. He couldn’t stand to watch her like this.
He immediately called one of his subordinates to investigate.
The call came back quickly.
James had indeed cut his wrists, but no one knew his current condition-whether he was alive or dead remained a mystery.
“Lily, I can’t find out exactly how he is, but… no news might be good news. Maybe he’s still alive…” Bodger spoke gently, trying to soothe her.
“Put the glass shard down. I’ll get you out of here.”
“Stay out of this!” Mergan’s voice was sharp, laced with desperation.
Seeing Bodger still insisting on taking Lily away, Mergan’s panic grew. He shot Bodger a deadly glare, ready to command his bodyguards to throw him out.
But at that moment, more bodyguards arrived-clearly on Bodger and Taylor’s side.
Taylor frowned, eyes cold as they locked onto Mergan. “Lily is my sister. Taking care of her is my responsibility. How is that ‘staying out of it’? I’ve made too many mistakes before, and I refuse to make another. You’re the one who refuses to repent!”
In Lily’s heart, the Ginger family was a thing of the past, and Taylor was no brother she cared for.
Still, she desperately needed to know what had happened to James. Right now, she needed Taylor and Bodger to get her away from this place.
She didn’t have the strength to argue over his claim that she was his sister.
Instead, she fixed Mergan with a look full of icy disdain and disgust. “I will never be with you. Not now, not ever.”
“If you keep me trapped like this, you’re only pushing me into a corner,” Mergan growled, his voice thick with desperation. “You’re forcing me to drag you down with me! Lily, if I were strong enough to stand against you, I’d end you myself!”
Lily’s eyes flashed with cold fury. “What did you just say?” Mergan’s face drained of color, his legs trembling beneath him as he staggered backward. The realization hit him hard-she no longer cared for him. More than that, she despised him now. But to hear her speak of killing him? That was a nightmare he had never dared to imagine.
His lips quivered, struggling to form words as pain twisted his expression. “You… want to kill me yourself?” he finally whispered, disbelief and agony mixing in his voice.
“Yes,” she said, voice sharp and unyielding. “I want you shattered into a thousand pieces, your bones ground to dust.” The merciless words extinguished any flicker of hope he might have clung to.
Mergan doubled over, clutching his stomach, unable to straighten up. His bodyguards stood frozen, but Bodger and Taylor wasted no time. “Hold him down!” they barked, commanding the reinforcements they had brought with them.
Though Mergan had a formidable number of guards at the villa, Bodger and Taylor arrived with four or five times as many. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Mergan and his men were quickly subdued and restrained.
“Lily, put down the shard,” Taylor urged gently, taking a step forward. “We’ll take you back to the Luke family.”
At last, seeing that her captors were truly here to rescue her and that Mergan was no longer a threat, Lily lowered the jagged piece of porcelain from her hand. The moment it clattered to the floor, Taylor instinctively reached out to take her hand and guide her toward the exit.
She flinched, stepping back sharply, eyes wide with caution. The distance she put between them spoke volumes-she was not ready to trust him yet. Taylor’s heart clenched painfully at the sight, the sadness of her fear washing over him. Without pressing further, he simply said softly, “Lily, my car is waiting right outside. Let’s go.”
“You can’t take her!” Mergan roared, his voice cracking with desperation and rage. “Lily is mine! I’ll protect her, love her! No one will ever take her away from me!”
Bodger’s face darkened with fury. He stepped forward and punched Mergan hard. “You savage!” he spat. “Lily is a person with her own life, not your possession! What twisted logic makes you think she has to be with you just because you ‘like’ her? She loves James-only James. She can only be happy with him.”
