She stared at him, wary and guarded. “Mergan, what will it take for you to let me go?”

“Lily, I had Mathilda dealt with.”

Mergan didn’t answer her question, instead speaking as if to himself. “She wanted to ruin your face, so I had her face ruined… Lily, as long as I’m here, that animal Mathilda won’t dare bully you

Mergan had disfigured Mathilda…

To be honest, Lily was pleased to hear Mathilda had suffered.

But this act didn’t make her feel grateful or moved; it only intensified her belief that Mergan was dangerously disturbed. Her unease grew.

She glanced at Mergan’s phone, which he had placed on the bedside table, and was weighing the feasibility of grabbing it to call James when his soft, yet skin-crawling, voice reached her again.

“Lily, James is dead.”

Mergan paused, then continued, “He cut his wrists two days ago. They found him too late. He didn’t make it.”

“What did you say?!”

It was as if time had stopped.

A deafening roar filled Lily’s head. She couldn’t hear a sound, couldn’t even clearly see Mergan’s face.

Her mind was consumed by a single sentence.

James cut his wrists. He didn’t make it.

How could James be dead?

She couldn’t accept it.

“James wouldn’t die…” Lily’s face was ashen. She mumbled the words as if in a trance.

Her eyes were so red they looked like they might bleed, and they burned with a dry, sharp pain, but she fought to keep the tears from falling. It was as if not crying would make Mergan’s words a lie.

She kept repeating the denial, as if to convince herself. “He’s waiting for me to come home. He’s waiting for me…”

“Mergan, I know you’re lying!” Lily’s voice suddenly rose. “You just want me to believe James is dead so I’ll stay quietly in this cage you built! Your disgusting plan won’t work. I don’t believe James would die, and I won’t stay in this hell. As long as I have breath in my body, I will find a way home!”

She hadn’t even wished him a happy birthday yet. How could he be dead?

She would never believe Mergan’s lies.

Seeing her in such anguish, as if her soul had been ripped out, Mergan’s brow furrowed.

He hated seeing her care so much for another man.

But he knew she would have to accept the reality of James’s death eventually. And he believed that, in time, her heart would be his. After all, they had been so close once. In the future, they would be even closer.

He didn’t argue. He simply held the phone screen up for her to see.

A video was playing.

Lily looked down and saw James, his face deathly pale, lying lifelessly on a hospital gurney. His left hand, hanging off the side, was caked in blood.

Blood that had clearly flowed from his wrist.

Mergan wasn’t lying. James had really cut his wrists.

How could he be so foolish?

Before she could even process the overwhelming heartache, Mergan played another video.

A light rain was falling on a cemetery. A single tombstone stood in the frame.

As the camera slowly zoomed in, Lily could clearly see the name on the headstone: James.

“Impossible!”

Lily still couldn’t believe James was dead.

She kept telling herself not to cry. James was fine, so why would she cry?

But even as she fought to hold them back, the tears overflowed.

“Lily, I’m not lying to you.”

Mergan put the phone away. Seeing the tears on her face, he could barely hide the jealousy in his eyes.

He closed his eyes for a moment, struggling to regain his composure. “After James mistook that body for yours, he tried to jump off the deck of the yacht to retrieve it.”

“Ashton grabbed him, had the bodyguards knock him out. That’s the only reason he didn’t jump and end up as shark food. I heard he was very calm when he woke up. He told everyone to leave him alone, said he wanted to go back to your home, just to be by himself for a while. He was there for a day and a night. When Ashton sensed something was wrong and went to find him, he was lying on the floor, covered in blood. He had no vital signs when they got him to the hospital. Think about it, Lily. If someone cuts their wrists and bleeds for a whole day, how could they survive? James is dead. If you don’t want those children, I can prepare a gentle medicine to help you get rid of them. If you do want them, then be good. Stop making me angry.”

When she first saw the video of James, the pain had been so sharp that tears streamed down her face.

But now, staring at his lonely tombstone, picturing the blood leaving his body, the heartache became clearer, more profound, and she found she couldn’t cry at all.

So, the pain doesn’t just fade.

When the pain is absolute, the tears simply stop.

She knew basic biology.

A person only has so much blood in their body.

If someone who cut their wrists was rushed to the hospital, they could likely be saved. But after a delay of a day and a night, the chance of survival was zero.

She knew James was, in all likelihood, gone.

But she still had to leave this place.

Mergan was a complete madman. She didn’t believe he would truly let the children in her belly live.

She also had to find Nancy and the others to confirm if that was really James’s gravestone.

She had to bring her children back to the Luke family.

If James was still alive, their family would be together, never to be separated again.

If he was truly gone, she would force herself to hold on, to wait for their children to be born safely, and to watch them grow…

“Lily, you can’t bring the dead back to life. Don’t be sad.”

Mergan couldn’t stand seeing her grieve for another man. He gently pulled her into his arms. “You still have me.”

“I’ll take good care of you, and I’ll never be separated from you.”

“Don’t touch me!”

Being held by Mergan, Lily felt as if a venomous snake was coiling around her.

She recoiled as if she’d been stabbed, shoving him away. “Who needs your care? Who wants to ‘never be separated’ from you? I won’t believe he’s dead until I see his body with my own eyes. He promised he would be with me forever. He wouldn’t just die like this…”

Lily tried to convince herself, over and over, that she couldn’t fully believe Mergan’s lies. She had to stay strong for her children. Only if she and the children were safe was there any chance of a reunion with James.
