The thought that she would finally be able to contact James made her fingers tremble uncontrollably.

She knew James’s number by heart.

She quickly dialed the number.

“Lily, what are you doing? Who are you trying to call?”

Almost the instant Lily finished dialing, the door was thrown open. Mergan strode in and snatched the phone from her hand.

“Give me back my phone!”

Lily was desperate,

She had been so close, so incredibly close to reaching James.

She couldn’t stand having the hope she’d finally grasped crushed by Mergan. She lunged for the phone.

“Lily, you’re not behaving.”

Mergan hung up the call, his eyes swirling with a suffocating gloom.

“I told you, you are mine. You will spend this life only with me. Stop thinking about James, or else…”

“Mergan, let me leave!”

Before he could finish, Lily suddenly gripped the folding knife and pressed the sharp tip firmly against her own throat.

She would have rather plunged the knife into Mergan’s heart.

But she knew she was no match for him. Even with a knife, she had little chance of hurting him. If she attacked, he would simply take the weapon, and she would lose her only leverage.

She knew Mergan didn’t want her to die.

Using her own life as a threat was her only chance to see James again.

“Lily…” Mergan’s expression changed instantly.

Seeing the sharp tip draw a clear red line on her pale neck, Mergan lost his usual composure.

There was a clear tremor in his voice. “Lily, don’t do anything stupid. Give me the knife…”

Lily wasn’t stupid. She wasn’t giving him the knife.

She held it tighter, enunciating every word. “Let me go! If you insist on keeping me here, you’ll only have my corpse!”

“Lily, don’t be impulsive…”

Mergan wanted to lunge forward and grab the knife.

But bright red blood was already welling from the cut. Fearing he would provoke her, Mergan didn’t dare make a sudden move. He could only try to placate her.

“Don’t hurt yourself… I know I’ve done many things that made you sad and disappointed. But four years ago, if you had come to Mergan for help, he wouldn’t have ignored you. Lily, don’t be angry with Mergan anymore. He will love you more than anyone. Let’s just be together, alright?”

Mergan’s words were spoken with deep emotion, but Lily wasn’t moved in the slightest.

Four years ago, when she was being bullied by Mathilda and the others… if she had asked him for help, he wouldn’t have ignored her?

How ridiculous. He had been one of her bullies. They had all ground her into the mud, only to pretend to offer a helping hand, watching her submit, watching her beg. What was the point of that?

It only made them all the more disgusting.

“I just want to go home!”

Lily pressed the knife harder into her neck. In an instant, blood stained her white collar.

“Mergan, I don’t want to be with you. Just looking at you makes me physically ill. If you don’t want a death on your hands, give me the phone, or let me go home!”

“Home” clearly meant the Luke family.

Realizing this, Mergan’s expression grew even more terrifying.

When she lived at the Ginger house, she had relied on him, had truly treated the Ginger family as her home. How could her mind now be filled with no one but the Lukes?

He had just received news that James had cut his wrists.

He truly hoped James would never wake up.

“Lily, stop this.”

Mergan looked up, his dark eyes filled with unchangeable stubbornness. “I went to great lengths to make everyone think you were dead. Why would I let you go?”

Lily’s fingers trembled violently.

Of course she didn’t want anything to happen to her babies, but she didn’t believe for a second that Mergan would spare them.

If she couldn’t escape today, her babies were doomed.

“I told you, I hate you! I will never be with you!” Lily was frantic, her eyes red. “I would rather die with my babies than be your prisoner for the rest of my life!”

“Lily, be good… give me the knife…”

Lily didn’t notice a maid enter the room and quietly light a stick of incense.

Lily had been holding the knife in a tight grip, but as a pleasant fragrance quickly spread through the air, her head grew heavy and her body weak.

Mergan’s image blurred in front of her, splitting into several shadowy figures.

She tried to tighten her grip on the knife, but her body staggered uncontrollably.

She realized then that there was something wrong with the fragrance.

“Mergan, you’re despicable. You’re…”

Her vision blurred. Her fingers went slack, and the folding knife clattered to the floor as she pitched forward.

“Lily…”

Mergan caught her just before she hit the ground.

His voice was full of obsession. “Don’t worry, I prepared this incense especially for you. It won’t harm your body. Don’t make me angry again. Just sleep. After this, no one will ever separate us.”

He gently placed her on the bed. After treating the cut on her neck, he placed a lingering, tender kiss on her forehead, as if she were the most precious treasure in his life.

He gazed at her peaceful, sleeping face, his eyes filled with tenderness.

But when he turned to look at Mathilda, that tenderness vanished, replaced by pure ruthlessness and disgust.

He gave a cold order to his men. “Wake her up.”

One of his men quickly forced a pill into her mouth and pricked her several times with a long needle. Her face contorted in pain, and her eyes flew

“Mergan…” open.

Mathilda’s stomach dropped when she saw Mergan standing over her like the grim reaper.
