“Show me what?”

“I could take you home, if you’d come with me. I could introduce you to my pack. There are a number of werewolf-human couples. in my pack. You could see how they live. Talk to them. Ask them what it’s like. No human will ever make you as happy as a werewolf will.”

“Isn’t it the same for you too, then? Wouldn’t you be happier with a werewolf mate?”

“No,” he scoffed, “I will only be happy with my mate. It doesn’t matter who it is. But if you choose to be with a human, he could cheat, he could stop loving you, he could even leave. But at werewolf never gives up on his mate, no matter what.”

The idea did excite me.

But only for a few moments.

Because the very next one, an arrow lodged itself into Blake’s shoulder.

-LIA’S POV-

I screamed, covering my mouth with my hands, as Blake growled in pain. His eyes turned black, and he glanced in the direction the arrow came from. “Get down,” he ordered, and I immediately obliged, crawling under the table.

Blake bent down. “Stay here, alright? You’re safe. I’ll be right back.” His voice was animalistic, and I nodded, as tears pricked my vision.

A second later, the restaurant echoed with screams. I made myself as small as I could, keeping myself hidden. There was a loud howl, and I flinched, my body trembling in fear. I hoped Blake was okay. He had an arrow in his arm. Would he be able to fight like that? I knew werewolves healed quickly, but what was he up against?

Realisation struck me.

It was them.

It was probably The Order.

Werewolf hunters. Ones I had led to our town in a stupid, impulsive moment of idiocy.

If anything were to happen to Blake, I wouldn’t forgive myself.

I had to do something.

I crawled out from under the table, but remained on the floor, taking cover behind the sofa.

If it was really The Order trying to kill him, maybe they thought I was in danger and were trying to help me. Maybe if I told them to stop, they would?

I took a peek, and my eyes widened. There wasn’t just Blake. There were two werewolves in the restaurant, caught in a deadly fight, one with green and gold eyes, the other with black, rabid ones. The one with green eyes was Blake without a doubt, hist coat matching the brown of his hair. The other-I didn’t know who he was-but his movements were eerily similar to the rogue that had shown up in school that day.

There was also a group of people, dressed in dark clothes, carrying weapons. Their faces were covered with ski masks, they shot only at Blake, distracting him from the fight with the and rogue.

“Stop!” I shouted, hiding behind the sofa again. “I’m the one who messaged you! I am not in any trouble. Please leave him alone, don’t hurt him!” I begged.

The growls continued, Blake and the rogue fighting against each other.

I tried to take another peek, but was roughly grabbed by the shoulder and pulled to my feet by one of the masked men.

“You called us?” he asked, his fingers digging into my shoulder painfully.

“Yes,” I cried. “I’m safe. He didn’t hurt me. Please help him. The other wolf is rabid.”

The man laughed. “You’re his mate, aren’t you?”

“Please,” I said, “let him go.”

“We can’t do that, honey. But we can save his life if you’d like. All you have to do is go with us.” He let go of my shoulder, and took me by the arm instead.

“No, I’m not going with you,” I said. “Let go of me!”

The man slapped me across the face, dropping me to the floor. I screamed as he bent down and grabbed me by the hair, dragging me across the floor. My heart hammered in my chest, hot tears. rolling down my cheeks. My gaze met Blake’s, and he growled, lunging towards me. But before he could get to me, me, the rogue wolf attacked him, biting off a chunk of his flesh from the neck.

“Blake!” I cried, watching the blood that oozed from his wound. He collapsed on the ground, and the rogue dug his claws into Blake’s back.

“Blake,” I cried again, and bit the man’s hand. He yelped and let go of me, and I crawled towards Blake. But the rogue’s eyes shot to me, making me freeze in spot. Growling, he pounced at me, slashing my arm with his claws. A bloodcurdling scream left my lips, and my cars rang as blood spilled from my arm. The rogue pinned me underneath him, and I whimpered in pain, staring up at him with wide eyes. He watched me hungrily, then glanced at the men for approval.

“Kill her.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, the world around me spinning.

But a thundering howl shook the walls of the room, and before I could make sense of what was happening, the rogue was thrown off of me. The Order began shouting, clearly taken by surprise. Multiple growls filled my ears, and I realised someone had come to our rescue. The rogue wolf pounced towards me again, seemingly hungry for my blood. But another wolf attacked him knocking him off course again.

I was lifted up from the ground by my dress and thrown onto a wolf’s back.

Tingles shot through me at the contact.

“Zane,” I whispered, holding onto the wolf’s fur.

He growled softly, before carrying me towards the exit. He dodged a few attackers, and ripped off the head of one. I closed.

DO my eyes shut, burying my face into him. My head spun, the world blurring.

Finally, we were out of the restaurant, and Zane gently put me down on the ground, before transforming into his human self.

“You’re safe, Lia,” he whispered, lifting me up again. I buried my face in his bare chest, the sparks in my skin helping to reduce the pain. “You’ll be fine, I promise,” he said, planting a kiss to my head and carrying me to a car. He placed me in the back seat, then climbed in beside me, tying a cloth to my arm to stop the bleeding. The car started, and I gained a sense of consciousness.

“Blake,” I said weakly. “He-he needs… he needs-“

“He’s gone,” Zane said, cupping my cheeks with his hands. “We didn’t find him inside. He left, Lia.”

“But… but you have to-“

“I have to get you to safety. The rogue has set his eyes on you. He’s not gonna stop hunting you now. You are my only priority for now, alright? We can look for Blake later, He’s a werewolf, he can handle himself. Drive, Ajax!”

I tried to protest, but my eyelids felt too heavy. I’d lost a lot of blood. The rogue had gotten me good. If Zane hadn’t showed up in time, I would be dead.

–

Zane pushed my hair away from my face, tucking it behind my ears. “You’ll be fine, my love. I promise. I won’t let anything happen to you. Just stay with me.”

I stared at him, until it was too hard, and I drifted into oblivion.

-ZANE’S POV-

“Call Emerald!” I yelled, rushing inside the packhouse with an unconscious Lia cradled in my arms. She was bleeding through the cloth I had tied around her arm, and I was losing my mind. My heart was pounding louder than I thought was possible, and nothing made sense. Everything was a jumbled mess around me, and the only thing that mattered was Lia’s safety.

“Emerald!” I shouted again, at the top of my Alpha voice this time.

Everyone around froze, dropping whatever they were doing and fixing their full attention on me.

Emerald rushed down the stairs, her eyes wide, and hurried up to me. “Yes, Alpha!”

“She won’t stop bleeding,” I said.

“Bring her to my quarters,” she said with a nod.

Sheila, Ajax and I took Lia to Emerald’s room, and placed her in her bed. Emerald was the pack doctor, the best healer I knew.

She was very experienced an

She was very experienced and very intelligent. I’d watched her revive people from the most critical of comas.

“She’s human,” Emerald muttered as she checked Lia’s vitals.

“Yes. And she is your Luna.”

She paused for a second and glanced at me.

Then she went back to treating Lia.

She removed the bloody cloth from Lia’s arm, and I clenched my jaw when I saw the wound. It was turning an odd blue.

“The claws were poisoned,” Emerald whispered, a deep frown on her face. “Who did this to her?”

“The Order,” I replied. “She’s gonna be okay, though, right?” I asked.

Emerald stared at me. The look of uncertainty on her face almost made me collapse.

“Emerald,” I said, “she’s gonna be okay.”

“Yes-yes, Alpha.” She took a deep breath, and began cleaning Lia’s wound, but her hands were trembling. She stopped and looked at me. “Alpha, if it’s alright, I need the room. I will do my very best to save her, I promise.”

“Your best should be enough,” I said with a nod. “Do whatever you have to do. I cannot lose her. Is that clear?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Reluctantly, Ajax, Sheila and I stepped out, and I ran a hand through my hair, my eyes turning black.
