Mom readily let him in, and my shoulders deflated slightly.
He carried a gorgeous bouquet of blood red roses, and gave me a charming smile.
“Hey Lia,” he greeted.
I frowned.
Why was he wearing a suit?
“Lia, why didn’t you tell me you had a date tonight?” Mom asked with a huge smile.
I blinked, unsure of what to say.
“She’s not even ready yet, Mrs. Snow,” Blake laughed, “I guess she simply forgot.”
“This girl is ridiculous,” Mom said, shaking her head. “I bet she was too busy studying for a test. Weren’t you, Lia? Then you say you no one asks you out.”
My cheeks burned with embarrassment.
“That’s okay, Mrs. Snow. I’m glad for that. That way, I can have her all to myself,” Blake said, his tone dripping with charm.
The charm I’d found myself attracted to when I first met him.
The charm that somehow didn’t affect me so much anymore.
Was it because of Zane? Was it because of Blake’s unexpected outbursts? The fact that he got me into trouble just to prove himself a hero?
I wasn’t sure.
Blake walked up to me, and I felt the urge to back away as his presence washed over me. Once it did, I found myself entranced. by the colour of his eyes.
“I know I haven’t been the best to you recently, Lia. But will your give me a chance? I promise I’ll keep you safe,” he said softly.
His eyes reflected nothing but sincerity.
“There’s… there’s a test I had to study for,” I said softly.
“I know, I promise to drop you back soon. It won’t take too long.”
“I’m… I’m not even dressed up, Blake.”
“I’ll help!” Mom announced, grinning.
I released a slow breath.
Blake stepped even closer to me, and leaned in, to my ear.
“I know you don’t trust me after what I did, Lia. But I promise you, I’ll never put you in harm’s way again. No matter what happens, I will always protect you. I was going to that day as well, Zane just stepped in before I could. Please, give me another chance.”
His words, said from that close proximity, melted my heart. within seconds.
“I hope you aren’t up to any kind of funny business, Blake,’ Mom said, narrowing her eyes now. “What you whispering in her ear?”
Blake smiled and turned to her. “Exactly what I’m about to tell you, Mrs. Snow. I will bring your daughter home by nine. I will protect her with my life, and I will make sure she has a good time. Please grant me your blessing to take her out.”
“You’re a smooth talker,” Mom laughed, clearly impressed.
–
“Alright,” I said. “If the two of you have decided, then who am I to say no?”
“Yes,” Blake said excitedly, then quickly covered it up with a cough. I could see his cheeks turn red with embarrassment.
A smile took over my lips. That was adorable.
“Give me thirty minutes,” I said, and turned to leave.
Blake caught my wrist.
“You forgot your flowers,” he said, handing them to me.
I took a sniff, and smiled. “Thank you, Blake, these are beautiful.”
“Not more than you.”
“Aww,” Mom cooed, making us both laugh. “Don’t mind me, please. I have been waiting for this day for far too long.”
She wiped a tear, and I shook my head. It could be a real one or a fake one. WKnowing how dramatic my mommy dearest could be, there was no way to tell.
“I’ll be back soon,” I said, and made my way up the stairs, a smile playing on my lips.
I glanced down at the roses. The gesture was heartwarming. He had brought me a similar bouquet on my birthday too. How did I end up overlooking all that?
I entered my bedroom and closed the door, locking it.
But a gasp left my lips the second I turned around.
Zane stood near the window, staring at me.
In a second, he closed the space between us, making me back away against the door.
“What are you doing here?” I whispered, my eyes wide. “I thought I told you to leave me alone.”
Zane tilted his head to the side, his blue dangerously. eyes narrowed
“You really thought you could get rid of me so easily, love?” He leaned in closer, making me jam my head against the door as tightly as I could. “Nice flowers,” he said, glancing down at them. “They reek of Blake. It’s slightly heartbreaking, honestly, how you tried to evade me to go on a date with him.”
How did he always show up at the wrong time?!
I groaned before turning my head to brush my lips against his. His hand came up to cup my face as he opened his mouth to let my tongue slip between his lips. As I deepened our kiss, he leaned toward me more, increasing the pressure of our lips. I brought…
-LIA’S POV-
“I didn’t evade you to go on a date with him,” I said.
He looked at me like he didn’t believe me.
“Zane, I swear. He showed up just like you did. Without invitation, without prior notice.”
Zane smiled now. “You’re giving me explanations. That’s cute. But I don’t want those, Lia. I want you to stay with me. Don’t go with him. Turn him down.”
I frowned, glancing down at the flowers in my hands. “No,” I stated. “Why should I do that?”
Zane narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean ‘why’? He put your in-“
“Harm’s way, I know. He apologised. It was a mistake.”
“It was a plan, Lia,” Zane scoffed. “Not a mistake. He wanted to make himself look good in front of you, and he thought the best way to do that was putting you in danger. He led an actual rogue to school, Lia. It wasn’t the kind of thing where he told a friendly wolf to fake an attack.”
I sighed. “I know. But it’s okay. I have forgiven him.”
“How could you?” Zane asked incredulously.
“The same way I forgave you. The same way I’m standing here with you so close to me and not freaking out,” I replied.
“I didn’t-“
“Yes, you never did. But your friends hurt me constantly for the last ten years, Zane. And you watched. If I can forgive that, I can forgive Blake.”
“You were never in any real danger with The Hounds. You know that.”
“Maybe that wasn’t real danger for you, Zane. But growing up bullied, I’ve had panic attacks and moments I forgot how to breathe. I could have died then too. I could have died in the locker that day before you pulled me out. I could have killed myself after growing too exhausted of the bullying. I could have self harmed. These things-all that your friends put me through-are actually really dangerous for humans. You might not understand because you’re a big bad werewolf, but they’re almost as dangerous as an animal attack.”
Zane lowered his gaze now.
“I know that everything that happened was wrong. And I wish there was a way to take it back,” he said softly.
“I know you do. Which is why I forgave you. But Blake wishes. the same. And I’m going to give him a chance. You keep talking about the Goddess and the bond we have, and how it’s destiny, right? Well, I share the exact same thing with him too. You’ve stolen chances to get closer to me, while he’s asked politely. If I let you close, he deserves a chance too, don’t you think?”
Zane stared at me silently for a moment, then cupped my cheek with his hand. He gently traced his thumb over my cheek, then withdrew his hand. “Don’t dress up too pretty for him,” he whispered. “Please?”
“I don’t have time anyway,” I replied.
“Okay. Good.” He nodded. “I’ll see you soon, Lia.”
“Bye.”
