But no one could stop Victor himself.

He was determined to marry her.

“Lily, you’re too thin-eat more. And you too, Adeline. You both need to eat well.”

Nancy kept serving food onto Lily’s and Adeline’s plates with her fork.

The more she interacted with Adeline, the more she liked her.

And from appearances alone, she thought her second son and Adeline looked perfectly matched.

If not for her shameless son’s poor judgment, lowering himself to someone like Marilyn, she would have happily played matchmaker.

But now… with such rotten taste, how could he deserve Adeline?

Nancy’s warmth toward Lily and Adeline while giving Marilyn only cold indifference nearly drove Marilyn insane.

She thought Adeline must have come here to steal Victor away from her.

In her eyes, Adeline was the reason Nancy and Zoey rejected her and why no one wanted her to marry Victor.

If she could only expose Adeline’s malicious, hypocritical nature, then she and Victor’s marriage would surely gain the blessing of the entire Luke family.

Tonight, she would make everyone see Adeline’s true colors.

She would.

After dinner, Adeline went to Lily’s room to discuss the details of the theme song they were about to record.

The two of them shared the same values and had endless topics in common.

Once the discussion ended, they drifted into casual chatter.

But Adeline knew a pregnant woman needed proper rest. Seeing that it was already past ten, she didn’t linger and said her goodbyes.

Lily insisted on walking her downstairs. When they reached the door, Lily suddenly wanted to use the bathroom and asked Adeline to wait so they could go down together.

Adeline stayed outside the room to wait.

The moment she stepped into the hallway, she was met with Marilyn, chin raised high, smiling with open malice.

“Feeling proud, are you?”

Marilyn strode toward her, beautiful yet arrogant.

“Seeing Grandpa and Grandma favor you over me-you must feel really proud, huh?”

Looking at Adeline’s strikingly cold and flawless face made Marilyn seethe with hatred.

She was considered an exceptional beauty herself, good in many ways.

But Adeline’s looks were too extraordinary, and because they were related by family ties, people constantly compared the two.

Every comparison ended the same: Adeline outshone her.

Marilyn felt she’d lived in Adeline’s shadow for years. And now, after Adeline shamelessly slept with her man and manipulated the elders into trying to tear her and Victor apart, how could she not hate her to the bone?

Her calculating eyes turned venomous. “I know all about you clinging to Victor. He’s my fianc?, the father of my child, yet you won’t let him go. You’re nothing but a filthy, disgusting mistress!”

Adeline despised Marilyn from the bottom of her heart.

But it was true-she had unwittingly fallen into the role she most hated.

Even though she loathed Marilyn, the shame pressing down on her now left her too drained to argue.

With a pale face, she glanced at Marilyn, then tried to walk past her toward the stairs.

But Marilyn wouldn’t let her go so easily.

She darted ahead to block her, narrowing her eyes with contempt. “Seeing that Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, and Mom all oppose Victor marrying me-does that make you feel smug? You know Victor and I truly love each other. You know I’m carrying his child. Yet you still incite them to break us apart. How cheap can you be?”

“Marilyn, I’ve never tried to split you and Victor.”

Adeline hadn’t wanted to quarrel.

But Marilyn’s accusations kept piling up, and she couldn’t just let the filth be dumped on her head.

“Heh, you didn’t?”

Marilyn sneered, lips curling. “Other people might not know how dirty and shameless you are, but I do.”

“All of Aunt’s property should be mine. You’re just an adopted girl-what right do you have to spend her money? What right do you have to live in her house? To hold onto her inheritance? If you had a shred of decency, you’d return every cent you’ve spent all these years!”

“Marilyn, you’re insane.”

Adeline was sickened by her brazen self-righteousness.

Taking a deep breath, she said, “I’m deeply grateful to my parents for raising me. I earn my own living and will repay them. I don’t covet their estate. They have their own daughter. Their inheritance should go to Mianmian, not to you-a conniving niece! You have your own parents and your own family. Why don’t you guard your own scraps instead of eyeing mine?”

“Bitch!”

Hearing Adeline suggest that Lin Hua’s estate should belong to Zhou Mianmian instead of her nearly made Marilyn explode.

In her mind, if Aunt hadn’t adopted Adeline, her uncle and aunt would never have had a child of their own.

That Adeline had robbed her of jewelry, of houses, of every bit of inheritance-it was all her fault.

Marilyn’s fingers trembled violently.

She wanted nothing more than to slap Adeline hard, to claw that face apart.

But reason held her back.

She knew the Luke elders already favored Adeline. If she struck her now, marrying Victor would only become harder.

So, in a twisted move, she slapped herself hard across the face several times, then clutched her stomach protectively and sank carefully to the floor.

Sitting down, she screamed hysterically, “Victor, help me!”

“Adeline’s gone crazy! She attacked me-she wants to kill our baby!”

“Help!”

Her voice rang with urgency and pain.

But when she looked at Adeline, her eyes gleamed with calculation and the pride of a victor.

Even if the elders had listened to Adeline’s whispers and spoken harsh words against her, Marilyn knew-tonight, she had set the trap.

The Broken-Hearted She and the Icy He

After all, the child in her belly carried the Luke family’s bloodline.

Marilyn refused to believe that once they thought Adeline had tried to harm the family’s precious grandson, the Lukes would still protect that vicious tramp.

Men valued bloodlines and heirs above all else.

Even if Victor had once been drawn to Adeline’s filthy body, once he believed she’d tried to kill his child, he would loathe her completely.

With that thought, Marilyn’s cries grew more dramatic, her voice rising and falling with theatrical agony.

“Victor, come save me-save our baby! Adeline hit me so hard, it hurts so much…”

“Adeline!”

Lily had just stepped out of the bathroom when she heard Marilyn’s shrill scream.

She rushed out, immediately standing in front of Adeline. “What’s going on?”

Downstairs, Grace and Nancy had been chatting. They hurried up the stairs at once.
