He looked up at me and snorted. “There’s a bottle of vodka in the cabinet. Mind handing it to me?”

If he thought I was about to let that change in subject slide, he had another thing coming, but I would comply for the moment. I went over to his liquor cabinet and grabbed the clear bottle, wondering if it was half-empty because he drank it or because this was a regular thing for him. I didn’t know how the human was still walking on two feet after sustaining an injury like that, let alone how he could have managed it more than once, but given how nonchalant he was about the whole thing, that seemed likely.

I handed him the bottle and watched as he unscrewed the cap. I thought he was going to take a swig for the pain, but when he twisted his side and prepared to pour the vodka on the wound, I grimaced.”You shouldn’t-“

Too late. A breath hissed through his teeth as he splashed the seventy-proof alcohol onto the fresh wound, but that was such a mild reaction it was almost comical.

When I saw him reaching for a packet of medical thread in the kit to tear it open, I interjected, “You’re not going to stitch that up yourself.”

He looked up at me blankly, as if he didn’t see the problem. “It’s fine. I’ve had worse.””From what, a grizzly bear?” I challenged.

He just chuckled, threading the needle. “I wish.”

That cryptic remark raised all sorts of new questions, but not only was I not prepared to ask them – let alone get the answers-I had other concerns at the moment.”Let me do that,” I said, taking a step toward him.

He raised an eyebrow. “

You know field medicine?”

The doubt in his voice was offensive, but understandable.

I put my hands on my hips. “Training to become the Luna wasn’t all Emily Post and planning soir?es,” I informed him. I wasn’t about to take no for an answer, and my other questions could wait until I was sure he wasn’t bleeding out.

Marcus shrugged, which had to hurt in itself. He set the needle down on the empty wrapper he’d just opened. “Knock yourself out.””You should still go to a doctor,” I muttered, eyeing the deepest gash for where I wanted to start. When I put my hand against his chest, I was surprised at just how warm he was to the touch. It occurred to me then that I had never actually touched a human before.

At least, Ithought he was human. Now, I wasn’t so sure.”Doctors and me don’t really mix,” he said in a gruff tone. His breath hitched slightly, barely noticeable, and that was the only change in him as I started the first stitch. It had been a long time since my training, and I’d never actually had to use that knowledge on a real person, but he didn’t need to know that.”You can give the cryptic routine a rest. I’m already very impressed,” I said flatly, working carefully. It was easier since he was holding perfectly still. What the hell was this guy?

He snorted. “It’s a long story. Let’s just say I haven’t told you everything.””There’s not being an open book, and then there’s disappearing randomly to have a bloody rendezvous with angry demons.” I looked up as I realized that was a very real possibility. “Please tell me that’s not what did this.””No, but you’re not far off,” he conceded. “Why are you here, anyway?”

I looked back up at him. “I got worried when you missed our lesson. It’s not like you.”

His face went blank. “That was today?”

I wasn’t sure whether to be insulted or not. “Yeah…it’s Wednesday.”

He grimaced. “Shit. I lost track of time.””Doing what?” I asked. “Hunting the Jabberwock?”

He pursed his lips and looked down at me. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?””Nope,” I answered unapologetically, and he winced as I slipped the needle back into his flesh.”Fine,” he muttered. “I was hunting. Decent guess. No, not a storybook character, but I’m honestly not really surewhat it was. Some of the worst things out there don’t have names. Least, not ones we can pronounce.”

I blinked, letting that new bit of information settle in. “And you make a habit of hunting mysterious cryptids that could eat you alive?”
