She nodded and went toward Diana to tell her the plan. At that moment, the rogues grew bold and decided they were going to try to run from us.
Did they seriously think they’d be able to outrun us?
If I wasn’t so annoyed, I’d laugh.
Instead, I ran to catch up with a couple of them and saw that other Volanas were not doing the same. I had to give this my best shot; there was no guarantee that this was going to work, but I had to try.
A nearby rogue turned his head and I swear I saw his eyes widen in utter shock to see that I was practically on top of him.
I lunged in his direction and tackled him to the ground. He struggled against me but with my abilities and full control of my wolf, I was way too strong for him.
Speaking to him through my mind, I said, “You are going to stop hunting Volanas. You will allow us to live in peace after today. Spread the word to others around our nation. Let this battle be a warning of what will happen if you continue to mess with us.”
His pupils grew large as he took in my command. Once they returned to normal, he nodded.
I got off him, allowing him to wiggle free. He was in a daze when he stood to his feet and he looked confused, but he didn’t attack. He just gave me one look, before he turned and ran.
I turned to the other Volanas who were following my lead; they were picking one rogue and using their mind manipulation abilities to end this battle once and for all.
Other rogues and witches managed to escape, so I knew the message wouldn’t get across to everyone. But it was a start and I knew the ones we did get to will spread the word about what had happened tonight.
If there is ever going to be a battle again, this time, we will be ready.
We are stronger together and now that all the Volanas have their abilities restored, nothing will ever bring us down again. This was the beginning of a new era, and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of it.
As my adrenaline began to settle and most of the rogues were gone I was finally able to take a breath and really think about all that had happened.
My pups.
Everything happened all at once, I hadn’t really had a moment to sit and ponder the fact that I was pregnant with twins. I was still in college and a few years away from graduating.
Fear started to attack my stomach and suddenly the world felt incredibly small.
I looked over at Enzo who was speaking with my father and the Betas. I think he was assessing the damage to their warriors and those who helped in the battle. I knew the Volanas could use their abilities to heal those injured. I don’t think we lost anybody, which was a huge relief, but we won’t know for sure until the situation is assessed further.
My mother soon joined me and through the eyes of her wolf, I knew just how proud she was. She motioned with her head for me to follow her and we went deeper into the forest and away from wandering eyes.
There was a small chest on the other side of a large Oaktree. It must have been placed there for after the battle so we would be able to change into some temporary clothes after we shift.
With one more look at me, my mother shifted back into her human form. She rummaged through the chest until she uncovered a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. She grabbed an extra pair of jeans and a tank top for me as I shifted back into my human form as well.
It felt good to be back in my body, as fun as it was to be in my wolf form. Once we were both changed, my mother wrapped me in her arms and held me tightly.
“Oh, Lila Bean,”
she breathed with tears filling her eyes. “I’m so unbelievably proud of you.”
“It’s not like I did this on my own,”
I said, smiling up at her. “Thank you for being here, Mom.”
“Did you really think I wouldn’t be?”
“Lila!”
I heard my father say as he rushed toward me.
He was already shifted into his human form and fully dressed. I released my mother and ran to him as he wrapped me in his warm embrace and spun me around, laughing with tears in his eyes.
“You did it! I’m so proud of you,”
my father breathed.
“We did it,”
I said to him, hugging him even tighter. Once I released him, I peered up at him, not realizing I was crying until his image was distorted. “How is everyone else? Were they badly injured?”
“The Volanas are healing them as we speak. Most of the rogues are gone. Some are too injured to move and there are a couple who stayed behind to clean up the aftermath,”
my father explained.
I was surprised to hear this. I raised my brows, not expecting that there would be some rogues who would willingly stay behind.
Before I could ask him any more questions, I felt a pair of strong and familiar arms wrapped around my waist.
“Enzo…”
I breathed as he buried his face in the nape of my neck and took in my scent. I closed my eyes, basking in his closeness and loving his every presence.
I turned around to face him, wanting to kiss my mate. I came close to losing him; I practically did lose him. I was never going to let this man go again.
Just as I neared him with my lips, screaming sounded within the forest and then a growl snapped us back to reality.
Lila’s POV
We didn’t waste any time running in the direction of the screaming and growling. The closer we got the angrier the growling had gotten.
My heart was pounding wildly in my chest as we broke through the clearing and saw Jazzy standing before a large black beast with piercing red eyes. Hazel was standing between them, and she was the one screaming at the black wolf to stand down; tears were streaming from her eyes.
Jazzy looked messy; her long black hair was no longer in a tight bun at the nape of her neck, it was let down and loosely around her shoulders. She had dirt all over her face and her clothes were torn. She had scratches on her pale legs and arms and her eyes were dark with fury.
She no longer had darkness swirling around her and I noticed the sky was back to normal and no longer swirling with darkness.
What happened to the dark curse?
Had it been broken?
A large black beast was towering over Jazzy and Hazel and growling angrily at them.
“Alpha, what is going on?”
My father said, stepping toward the black wolf who I knew was Alpha Jonathan.
“Get out of my way, witch,”
Jonathan’s wolf sneered as drool dripped off his large white canines.
“She is powerless,”
Hazel cried. “You can’t do anything more to her. She’s mortal now. Please.”
“She tried to kill my daughter,”
Jonathan hissed. “I will have her head for that!”
“Alpha Jonathan, stand down,”
my father ordered.
“We are on MY territory,”
Jonathan growled, his voice booming across the forest and causing my skin to crawl. “You have no control over me here.”
“As head of the Alpha Committee, I order you to stand down,”
my father said firmly, using his Alpha voice, which didn’t seem to phase Alpha Jonathan in the least.
His red eyes were fixed on Jazzy who was sneering at him in return.
Without thinking, I ran toward them. Enzo tried to grab my arm to keep me by his side, but I was too quick for him to grasp me and the next thing I knew, I was standing beside Hazel in between Jazzy and Alpha Jonathan.
“You don’t want to do this, Alpha,”
I said breathlessly, staring into the eyes of his beast.
“Get out of my way,”
he growled through his teeth, still fixing his eyes on Jazzy.
“If you take her life, you will never come back from that,”
I told him, trying to keep my voice as calm as I could manage.
“I’ve taken lives for a lot less,”
he scoffed.
My stomach tightened at his words.
