Renee…” it takes. Please, show mercy spare

Nancy’s gaze returned to Susan.

“Susan, when someone commits a crime, they must bear the responsibility themselves. You offering us your life means nothing. A murderer’s hands stay bloody no matter how many family members cry or offer their lives in exchange. The guilty still face the law. Stop hurting yourself. Stop making this harder for everyone.”

When the doctors arrived, she turned to them at once. “Please treat Susan’s wounds.”

Then she told Susan firmly, “Take care of your injuries and stop letting your thoughts run wild. None of us can influence the judge’s verdict.”

At her word, the doctors moved to lift Susan and take her to another ward. Nancy didn’t want her staying here and disturbing Ivan while he recovered.

“Susan! Blanc! James…’

Tears rolled down Susan’s face in heavy streams.

She still couldn’t accept that Nancy could be so cold and unfeeling toward her.

She didn’t want to leave the room, either. Her daughter was her life, her last hope. She wanted to fight with every breath left in her body to save her daughter.

But her head injury had been severe. Her vision was darkening, her body weak. Soon she was strapped onto a stretcher and wheeled to another floor, unable to resist.

“Mom…”

Once Susan was gone, Renee completely lost her composure.

James truly cared about Susan.

Before his coma, he had always called her on holidays, sending gifts and transferring her money.

Nancy had also made sure to send Susan jewelry, handbags, fine clothes.

Renee had always believed the Luke family genuinely treated Susan as family, that Susan held real standing with them.

She couldn’t accept how much had changed since Lily clung to James.

The Luke family no longer gave Susan any face. Now they even wanted to send her to prison.

Renee was consumed with hatred.

She was overwhelmed with bitterness.

But the Luke family treasured that lowly, shameless Lily as if she were gold. They refused to give Susan or her any lifeline.

And soon, the police arrived

and dragged her away.

The moment she was handcuffed and shoved into the police car, Rence swore to herself she would not go quietly. She would make Lily pay.

If she refused to admit she had spiked the fish-maw soup with an abortifacient, she could be released on bail before any final sentence. The world did not revolve only around Lily bearing James’s children. If Renee used that time to get pregnant by him and the “stray seed” disappeared, the Lukes would never let her rot in prison.

Renee would not lose,

“They scared me to death.”

After Susan and her daughter were taken away, Grace still patted her chest, trembling with lingering fear. “Thank God Lily didn’t drink that bowl. I must tell Spring and the others to be extra careful in the kitchens-nothing like today must ever happen again.”

Nancy squeezed Lily’s hand. “Yes, our Lily is lucky. Ivan is a tough kid-he’ll be fine after a few days in hospital. I can’t even imagine what would have happened if Lily had drunk it. Just thinking about it makes my heart race…”

Grace nodded in agreement. The boy was young and hardy; a few days’ rest would do him good. A girl was more fragile-if anything happened to Lily, they would be devastated.

Ivan… sometimes he wondered whether he was really blood of their blood. Still, knowing his little niece would be safe, and that in a few months he could play with her, made him happy.

“Nancy-“

They chatted and laughed quietly until Blanc suddenly took Nancy’s hand. He looked uneasy and guilty. “There’s something I’ve hidden from you for years. I think I should tell you.”

Hidden from Nancy for years? Grace’s mind raced back to what Susan had said earlier-that Renee was Blanc’s child. Did Susan mean it literally? Was Renee actually the result of something between Susan and Blanc?

Grace and Zoey had been close friends for years. Nancy had spent as much time with Grace as with Zoey growing up; in Grace’s mind Nancy came before anyone. The idea that the child Susan bore had involved her friend’s husband made her blood run cold. She stepped forward and kicked him hard without restraint. “Blanc, what have you been hiding from Nancy? Did that woman really give you a child? Have you no shame-cheating on Nancy? I’d rather not have a son like you! You ought to throw yourself out the window!”

Henry’s face turned grave in an instant. He delivered an even harder kick. “You worthless brat -if you really did anything like that, even if you jump out the window, I’ll break your legs first!”

“Dad, you can’t seriously mean that-did you betray Mom?” Ivan sat up on the bed, his usually bright face uncharacteristically serious. Lily felt a bloom of worry in her chest. She liked the Luke family atmosphere and adored Nancy; if Blanc had betrayed her, Lily could not bear to imagine it.

“Don’t you dare say such things! How could I ever betray Nancy?” Blanc protested.

Though Henry and Grace were elders and sometimes said outrageous things, Blanc didn’t want to argue with them. He could, however, scold his youngest son. He shot Ivan a fierce glare. “Keep your mouth shut before I break your legs.”

Why was he always the one being blamed? Misunderstood and cornered by his family, Blanc felt deeply aggrieved.

He had intended to scold Ivan further, but Nancy coldly pulled her hand away and kept her distance. He feared she might misunderstand, feared to hurt her, and rushed to explain. “Nancy, don’t listen to Ivan’s nonsense. There’s only you in my heart. How could I have a child with someone else? Do you remember, years ago, when Susan came to our house and suddenly ran a fever?”

Nancy nodded. He pressed on, “You told me to send her home. I did. After I got out of the car, she suddenly threw herself into my arms. I was shocked and pushed her away. She said not to misunderstand-that she’d been delirious from fever and had hugged me by mistake. I knew how close you and she were; I worried you’d think I’d become conceited or unfaithful, so I never told you.”

Of course, Blanc hadn’t told Nancy the whole story back then for another reason.

His wife doted on Susan so much that if he’d told her, Nancy might never have believed him- might have thought Susan was trying to steal him away.

“But I always thought Susan wanted me for my money,” Blanc admitted awkwardly.

He’d wanted to add that she’d also been attracted to his looks, but he swallowed the line- saying he was handsome would only make Nancy think him vain.

“After today, I’m more convinced that if Susan raised a daughter like Renee, she can’t be a saint herself. You count her as a friend, as a confidante-don’t be surprised if she doesn’t treat you as one. Honestly, she threw herself at me. Always primping and dressing up-how shameless.”

If anyone felt more furious than being cuckolded, it was Grace at the thought someone might try to steal Nancy. She scolded Susan and then turned on her son, barking, “You! Your son’s grown and you go around attracting women-shameless!”

“I-” Blanc felt wronged. He went home after work every day; he left the socializing to his sons. He wouldn’t touch any other woman, so how had he been unfaithful? Afraid Nancy might see him as unfaithful, he hurried to explain, “Nancy, after she threw herself at me I pushed her away and left. I didn’t even help her up. I haven’t spoken to her alone since. Believe me-I haven’t been running around.”

Nancy believed him.

She’d never imagined Susan, a childhood friend, would make a move on Blanc behind her back. Susan had claimed to be feverish that night-thirty-seven point five-but how high could the car ride have driven her temperature in half an hour? It didn’t add up. It had been deliberate.

When Susan cared for James, was she truly helping, or waiting for a chance with Blanc? The thought disgusted Nancy.

“Nancy…” Blanc misread her silence as anger and panicked.

To calm him, Nancy squeezed his hand and said softly, “I believe you. I can tell right from wrong. I’ll be careful-I’ll avoid contact with Susan. James, you be careful too. Yes, Susan helped you for three years and we’re grateful, but if she tries to use that favor to make unreasonable demands, you don’t have to comply.”

James nodded. He knew the family had paid Susan handsomely back then. He was grateful and respectful, but he wouldn’t blind himself if Susan tried to hurt the people he cared about.

That evening, James and Lily left Ivan’s ward together.

When James opened the car door for Lily, he didn’t go to the driver’s seat-he sat beside her in the back and pulled her hard into his arms, kissing her fiercely.

The thought of what might have happened that morning-if she had drunk that bowl and miscarried, or worse-filled him with terror. Even with her beside him he couldn’t calm down. In the hospital ward he’d kept his distance out of respect for the elders; now, alone in the silent parking garage, he wanted to worry her into quiet. He kissed her as if he wanted to bite her lips, to devour her, to keep her safe inside him.

“Lily-“

John, who had business at the hospital, stepped out of the elevator and saw James’s car. He saw James sitting with Lily in the backseat and his color drained.

He ran over and pounded on the car window. “James, you-“

“Keep it down-” Lily groaned inwardly.

James’s kisses were always so hungry. He’d improved shockingly fast. Though the intensity thrilled her, it was almost too much.

“I’m so scared,” James murmured between kisses.

He wasn’t listening to reason-if anything, he gripped the back of her head and deepened the kiss. His panic-fueled possessiveness made him unable to stop: he kissed her like a man set aflame, burning her with the only thing that soothed him.

James didn’t say what he was truly afraid of.
